I wish when people are comparing plans that they would state EXACTLY what they are paying per phone line and what service they get, and whether or not they already own their phones and whether or not, if they switched to one of the double-data plans, they would be getting new iPhones.

Otherwise, all these "i'd pay $xxx more if I switched" is kind of meaningless because we can't do a fair comparison. There are lots of factors (taxes and fees, upfront costs of phones, monthly cost of installment payments, line costs, etc.) and it's hard to compare when all the numbers aren't known.

As far as taxes and fees go, my $15 lines on ATT Mobile Share run me $18 and change after taxes and fees. I'm not sure how taxes and fees would differ though on the old unlimited plans. I'd guess they were higher if they are a percentage of the line cost...

Currently I have (2) unlimited plans, and (2) 3gb plans, my total is $255/mo including taxes and fees with my FAN discount.

Between the unlimited plans, we use about 15GB of data most months, we get throttled at 5GB each, but somehow we still manage to use more data.

I'm not switching because not only would the 30GB/40GB plan cost more, but I can't but think there is some ulterior motive/agenda for AT&T to all of a sudden be so generous to all of it's non-unlimited plan users.

A 40GB plan would run around $200/mo (or $180/mo for the 30GB plan) with all the taxes and fees, thats what I was told at the AT&T store.

The iPhone 6's we want on contract would be $199+$399+$399+$499+7% tax.

iPhone 6's without contract would be $649+$849+$849+$949+7% tax.

Subtract roughly $800 from the total phone pricing (with or without contract) after selling the current iPhone 5's we have.

In the end, my current plan ends up costing less, although I still freakin' hate getting throttled at 5GB on the dot, even though I don't feel as if I am located in one of AT&T's "congested" areas.

Considering the cost of the phones you are buying, if AT&T lets you keep your unlimited plan at the same $255/mo and still get the phones at the contract price, then it seems like a steal as you are saving $1800 on just the phones going with a 2YR contract (not taking into account the selling of the used phones, taxes, etc.). Here in CA taxes are based on the FULL RETAIL PRICE of the phone, regardless of the contract price you pay.

You could look at it this way, though...with NEXT you would pay $130+$15+$15+$15+$15=$190 per month for 30GB plan, with hotspot, and unlimited talk/text. That's $65/mo cheaper than you are paying now. Over 24 months, you've saved $1560. So now, the difference in phone savings is only $1800-$1560=$240. Over 24 months, that's $10 per month more than you are paying now, you can have 30GB data and hotspot. Plus, no upfront cost on the phones. Not that bad a deal.

I agree, it's not a bad deal, but the fact that I have to end up paying more even though technically on my current plan, I should be able to use 30gb of data just between my 2 unlimited lines really irks me.

AT&T is almost playing mind games hoping I'll give up my unlimited, and pay them $10more a month so I don't get throttled.

I am pretty torn, not being throttled would be nice, but again, I'm hoping there some ***** going on between the FCC and AT&T about throttling. Based on AT&Ts track record, there's no reason for them to all of a sudden be so nice and double every ones data for free.

How is this new deal from ATT any kind of deal?

Under my present plan I spend:
$40 for Cell Unlimited
$40 For Data
$15 for Messaging
$50 for iPad 5GB
_____
$135

Under this plan for the 30GB deal:
$130 for Shared Data (30GB)
$40 for my phone
$15 for messaging
$10 for iPad
______
$195

Under Next its $25 less or $170

Why would you have to pay 15 for messaging? Mobile share plans include unlimited talk and text. And if you're on the mobile share plan, cancel your iPad and just tether or hotspot with your phone. That knocks another 25 dollars off bringing you down to 145 a month. And also if you signed your contract before Feb of this year it's only 15 dollars for your phone not 40.

Check you math. You're currently spending $145, not $135.

The new plan is a lot closer to what you're currently spending than you think. Plus you'll have 30GB of "for sure" LTE speed, hotspot tethering, and bring more phones to your account for $15.

Better than the a'la carte menu of services you are paying for now.

I don't really know if there are 30gb plans but I can tell what I have. 400 minutes of calls, 1000 texts (never use them though) 2gb and unlimited minutes with one person of your choice. That costs 10 euros/month. You can add another 2gb by paying 15/month. It's enoug for me, as I never finish 400 minutes because most of my longer calls are free with my fiancé.
It just scares me there are 140bucks/month plans somewhere, that's all :)
The $140 a month are family plans however. I'm paying $180/month for 4 devices 2 iPhones and 2 iPads.

Here is my calculation for my case. Currently, I have 2 iphones with unlimited data, 1 iphone with 200meg.
Current plan:
Talk:$50
Data:$80 (30+30+20)
Text: $30
main phone: $0
2nd phone: $10
3rd phone: $10
total: $180
================
New plan: 30G
Talk/Data/Text: $130
1st phone with 2y contract: $40
2nd with 2y contract: $40
3rd phone no contract: $15
total: $225

Even if I do the Next program, that would drop my 1st and 2nd phone down to $15/m for each phone so total = $175. However, the biggest difference I see is that with my current plan, I only need to pay 50% up front for the 2 phones then carry a 2yr contract. After the 2 yrs period I can sell the phone and get a new one...
With the Next program, we either have to pay for the phone upfront 100% or pay the entire phone cost over 24m period. Then you can own the phone outright.

Of course I do want to switch to the new 30G plan so we won't be throttled. Both of our lines average ~ 8G per month with us being very careful not to go over.

Please help me if my above calculation is off. Thankx!!

If you look on Verizon's site they are offering promos for their higher tier data plans just like At&t. Thing is i remember seeing looking at this about a week ago and it seems like the prices were the same without the promo.

I'm with AT&T, I get no service. I hate it. But I have really good pricing. AT&T offers $15 per month for phone service if you have no contract or Next. Verizon charges $40 regardless. Additionally I have a 20% corporate discount. I can get a 15% discount with Verizon but that $40 charge kills me. With the promo I pay less for 30Gb than I do for 15 with Verizon.... What to do?

Apparently there is an AWS spectrum auction later this year. Anyone know if it will carry the same terms as Verizon's 700MHz C-block? If so, hopefully ATT will win and be forced to end throttling and allow tethering. Could be why they introduced these new plans that have enticed many of us unlimited users.

Or it could be that AT&T would like to hang on to the their iPhone 6 customers. Here is another twist about the double the data shared plan.

"According to research firm Kantar, the iPhone's U.S. market share was 32.5% in the second quarter. However, according to Statcounter, the iPhone's market share of data usage tops 50% in the U.S. This shows that iPhone users tend to consume more data than on competing smartphones. As a result, AT&T's decision to market its high data plans following the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus launch appears aimed at keeping and attracting new data consuming iPhone users. In other words, AT&T is trying to protect what's most important to its wireless business, the iPhone."

Hilarious plans. 140 USD per month is worse than extortion. I advise people to get smart and opt for better alternatives.

Yeah, I just upgraded to the 30 GB plan. Its a great ****ing deal, since I get to eliminate Smart Limits and it only ends up being only a few bucks more expensive than my 10GB mobile share plan. This data capacity is just unreal. I couldn't run this out if I tried.
Guess u dont have netflix or stream video. .. I just did a test using my unlimited plan and watching netflix... Kept it running for about 3 hours...burned thru 2.78 gigs......so about 900 megs per hour. So if just 1 of the 4 lines on the 30 gig double data deal stream 1 hour of netflix per day then thats 27 gigs per month. ...just for netflix....also after the throttling kicks in on the old grandfathered unlimited plans netflix still works good....but youtube is unwatchable...and hbo go slows down....spotify works fine throttled too... Anyone who cant figure out how we cud use so much data obviously havent streamed netflix....i also have slingbox..another hog.....i wont ever be giving up my 2 unlimited plans.

So I'm thinking about plans with AT&T. I keep coming back to the same question: Is it worth keeping the unlimited data plan?

I used to use a lot more data when I had a job, and I was thinking of signing up for iTunes Match, which would use a lot more data, And I was thinking that with the 6+, I might be watching more movies and videos on it than I currently do on my 5. I'm also on a 900 minute plan, and now have the max minutes banked, but 'in the day' I used a lot more minutes too.

My issue is that if I give up the 'unlimited' data, and then say, get a job, or end up using iTunes Match over cellular, I'm thinking I'll miss the unlimited data. And if the courts decide to spank AT&T for not knowing that unlimited means UNLIMITED, then the unlimited plan becomes of potentially more value.

Decisions, decisions...

But I use wifi a lot more than cellular, like I'm sure most people do, and yet still find places where there is no wifi where I would end up using more cellular data...

Dang...

Am I a data plan hoarder? I hate giving up something that might have better value in the future, and just because, according to the AT&T sales puppet, 'everyone is doing it' doesn't make me want to just say 'do me'...

How do you watch netflix while being throttled? I watch a decent amount of Netflix but rarely go over 10GB's. I just don't watch that much video on my phone, I prefer a bigger screen.

That's where I pause when thinking about getting the 6+. *Would* I use more data with that phone. Watch more video, on cellular. Hmm...

I've spent the last year wondering the same thing for pretty much the same reasons. And after looking at my usage over the last 12 months, I've decided to give up unlimited, paying ETF for the four months remaining on my current contract & leaving AT&T postpaid after almost 15 years. The market has shifted so much in the last year, with things like NEXT and shared family plans (the latter is of no use to me as a single line payer). Fact is, some of the prepaid plans out there are offering unlimited data now for close to the same price I'm currently paying, so I can get it back with the same conditions AT&T puts on it if I really want it bad enough. Since I don't actually use anywhere near enough to even hit the throttling limit and almost never use my minutes (Why talk when you can text? LOL), I can cut my wireless payment literally in half by going prepaid with either TMobile or Cricket. Even when I upgrade to the 6+, if I use more data than I currently do, there are still plenty of plans that would cover my expanded needs for less than I now pay.

Making this change gives me the flexibility of changing plans or carriers for the next good non-contract deal that comes along, or if my needs actually do change significantly in the future. It took a while for me to be comfortable with the idea of giving up unlimited data (that I wasn't even using, keeping it "just in case"), but now I'm actually happy to be getting rid of it. I'd stay with AT&T postpaid if I had the option of a shared plan at a decent rate--never had any issues with them--but there's really nothing they can offer me right now as a single line customer that saves me any money in exchange for giving up unlimited.

You can change your bandwidth settings in Netflix (under your account on their website) so it streams at as little as 300mb/hour - which is probably why it still works on a throttled AT&T phone/tablet.

Again I go back to throttling, it makes steaming video a no go.

Actually, it doesn't necessarily. I watch Hulu throttled with only a slight drop off in resolution. I was quite surprised. It varies with the source you are streaming from though--HBO won't play at all for me.

Wrong, it's 15 with Verizon too. It's not advertised and I kept getting wrong info from reps, so I almost switched to att myself but it's an option. You need to go online and choose the month to month promo, it gives u the discount

I called and they said I couldn't do this. I will check online and call tomorrow, because this is what's holding me back.

With this talk of throttling, do they also throttle their own content from U-Verse? That would seem to be counter productive on some levels, for them to say 'Watch your movie *anywhere*', and yet say 'Oops, but we're being *******s and you can't actually do that'.

But this still isn't factoring in the monthly cost for the phone, does it not? If so, wouldn't that, at the most, be $39 for each phone?
