Ok, so I'm coming out of a beat up 6, bought and returned a max a month ago as I just didn't get the value proposition (for me; the phone was gorgeous). So far with my 128 red xr, I'm digging the package: love face id compared to my 6's gen one touch id, screen's great, phone is noticeably lighter than max but not by much. Very pleasantly, even thought the chassis is pretty close to max's width, the larger bezels
seem to make one-handing easier, or at least reliably enabling reachability. Speaking of bezels, yeah, I notice them as bigger than max but only when I focus on it - regular usage, they're a non-issue. The separated speakers are great. The aluminum chassis is not as massive feeling as the stainless on the max, nor does it feel quite as … luxurious, for lack of a better word. I'm also worried anodized aluminum will be slipperier since I often go caseless; we'll see.
Now, I'm not digging what feels like sharp edges on the back glass/frame joint under the power button. Since I single hand and am right handed, that edge sits right at the joint at the base of my index finger and is annoying. I also still don't love control center location.
For me, the xr is great - but part of that greatness is the value proposition. While paying full price for the max wasn't hard, it just didn't … feel right - my priorities have changed from post college years - making another (partial) college fund payment for my three teens was worth returning the 256 max for the 128 xr. (I guess my concession to bling was the product red over my usual grey

)
