So after being a big phone guy for the last couple of years, and singing the praises of the Max sized phones, I swapped out my Pro Max for a Pro tonight. I had gone Xs Max to a Pro Max last week, and the whole time I was thinking about the Pro. I just exchanged it tonight and I’m actually happy I did. Granted, I am in the honeymoon phase, but I do like the size. We’ll see how it goes.
On a side note, I almost had them install a screen protector when I was there, until I watched the guy. He looked like he was beating the crap out of the phone he was doing. I mean he was really cranking the squeegee on the screen. Would that damage the screen or internals like that? The lady who’s phone he was doing even asked if that would damage the phone, he tells her “oh no worries, I’m certified” Just curious if that’s the norm.

lol I’ve been debating doing the same. I’m kinda tired of carrying a huge phone around myself. I can use my iPad at home.
As much as I love the size of the Max version, I hate it, if that makes any sense. I like the Pro a lot more than I thought I would.

Well it’s the last 5.8” iPhone going by rumours, so best to get the most current model that you can use for the next few years, before moving onto the 6.1” replacement (if it’s still around by then).

Honestly, for me it was more about the weight of the Max size phones. They’re heavy phones. I like the feel of the Pro in my pocket. Funny how much lighter the Pixels are compared to the iPhones. I was surprised when I was playing with them.

I went from a 6s plus to an X and felt so much better to go down in size. I don't think I'll ever go bigger again.

As to the screen protector; I can be pretty rough with mine. There's nothing wrong with it.

The smaller phones are easier to carry and handle. However I know I prefer a bigger phone. I switched from the 7 plus to the X and was miserable for the whole year. I was happy to upgrade to the Xs max.

I’ve had the large size since it was an option and I did the same this year. I downsized from last year’s Max to the standard 11 Pro and I’m ecstatic. All the consumption of media I do that benefits from a larger display, I’ve got the iPad and MacBook Pro for... or the TV. I’m a ‘he’, so no bags or purses were with me daily so I was in the daily habit of taking it out of my front pocket and placing it somewhere precarious in the truck... even the latest vehicle designs are unaccommodating to the bigger phones!
I don’t miss the larger phone at all. Of course, this is the year of the massive battery gains - especially in the junior pro - so I/we may have gotten lucky there too.

it’s nice using one hand and feel safe

likewise was too small for me...size was the only real difference for upgrading but was worth it

I too have switched from the Pro Max to the Pro. Love the better handling. I can type almost twice as fast on the 11 Pro vs the Pro Max because of less thumb travel. That being said, I think the 6.1” 2020 iPhone Pro will be the sweet spot for me.

My sweet spot would be something the size of the iPhone 6/6s with a full screen. My phone isn't be be all and end all device so comfort will always take precedence over display size. Unfortunately no-one makes anything decent in this size any more.

What makes a phone too big for me will always be width. I use both an iPhone XS and Samsung S10 and they both have the same width so they don't feel differently sized even though the S10 is a little taller. This is the largest I'll go in a phone. The S10e would have been a better fit for me had it had the 3 cameras and the in-display fingerprint reader.

The original big iPhone, the iPhone 6 Plus is big just like the 11 Pro Max- but lightweight. I have one. It's the best of both worlds (size & weight wise)- Big screen but not a boat anchor in your pocket. Every big iPhone since then has gotten heavier with each new version and the latest big iPhone is definitely not pocket friendly

you have to remember the bezel is using stainless steel on the X, XS/XS Max, 11 Pro/11 Pro Max models. That’s a significant weight increase. I love that heavier weight in the X as it makes the phone “feel” substantially more of a quality build. So of course comparing to a phonethat uses a lot more plastic - Pixel 4 feel cheap.

in the near future I’d love to see phones having an option of biodegradable components ... compressed hemp (as silly as it sounds) with some coating to resist degradation in the first few years.
SonyEricsson has tried something along these lines with 3 feature phone models but did not sell well.

SonyEricsson Elm (which btw had active noise cancelling in wired headphones back in 2010!

For years designers added unnecessary weight to products because of that bias of weight equals quality when the opposite is true in most cases.

I always want to like the smaller models, and I always do temporarily, but I seem to regret them in the long-run. I still might downsize the next time I upgrade, but we’ll see.

If you're truly happy with larger models then why are you wanting/caring to like something else? I usually find people try things different because they're not happy with what they have.

Because I do get unhappy with the larger models. I tend to use my phone majority one-handed, and it just gets very fatiguing and annoying over time on the larger models. Last time I downsized (iPhone 7+ to regular 7), I got annoyed a lot more quickly with the smaller screen size and shorter battery life than I did with the one handed-fatigue of the larger devices though.

What makes me curious about downsizing again is that the current smaller sized iPhone models are comparable in screen size to the old iPhone Plus models’ screen size, the iPhone 11 Pro battery life is a lot better than the old smaller sized models’ battery life, and my circumstances have changed since I last downgraded (I watch a lot less videos on my phone than I used to).

I'm definitely downgrading in size for my next upgrade. Had my XS Max a little over a year and while I enjoy the big screen for watching videos I hate holding and carrying it. I had the X for 6 months before my Max and I feel that was the perfect size. Probably will pick up a Pro next month as a birthday present to myself :)

Small pro is the go for me, same phone as the max and it's pocketable, no need for a max with a 11" pro iPad.
I actually picked up a new max off gumtree a few weeks or so before pro released to try, then sold it for a small profit and used a SE till i got my pro.
I was on a XR for 8 months before that.

still a surfboard size phone no matter the weight

While the smaller size is nice; if you're like me and largely see the iPad as a redundant product then the larger size becomes necessary.

Tbh... There's no reason to have an iPhone and iPad, ESPECIALLY if you have the Max sized iPhone.

I've had a couple of short stints with plus sized devices and have never been able to stick with it. The X/XS/Pro size is just a sweet spot and hopefully the rumors fall through and we can continue on this form factor.

As far as the installation being rough, if you've ever watched a teardown of these devices you'll see that everything is packed together pretty tightly. I'd say the only thing you have to worry about is the glass. They'd have to be smashing it about pretty recklessly to damage or dislodge anything internally.
