While the smaller size is nice; if you're like me and largely see the iPad as a redundant product then the larger size becomes necessary.

Tbh... There's no reason to have an iPhone and iPad, ESPECIALLY if you have the Max sized iPhone.

Yeah well opinions are like... well you know. Like @Ralfi said, I like having a more pocketable phone when I'm out and about. When I'm home I mostly use my iPad. So yeah, there's a reason to have both.

I've had a couple of short stints with plus sized devices and have never been able to stick with it. The X/XS/Pro size is just a sweet spot and hopefully the rumors fall through and we can continue on this form factor.

As far as the installation being rough, if you've ever watched a teardown of these devices you'll see that everything is packed together pretty tightly. I'd say the only thing you have to worry about is the glass. They'd have to be smashing it about pretty recklessly to damage or dislodge anything internally.
I love the screen size of the Max versions, and the battery life is outstanding as well, but my biggest gripe is the weight. Usually off duty, I wear a lot of athletic shorts, and even sweatpants, and having a heavy phone flopping around gets old.
As far as the screen protector install, I was shocked how hard that guy was using that squeegee. The look on that lady's face was priceless too. I'm never that rough on my phone, and I guess it's a testament to what these phones can withstand if that's the norm.

The 7 Plus was my favorite iPhone because it gave me power, battery life, and a big screen with nice warm colors, all in a very thin and lightweight package. I would much rather have an aluminum back than glass, even if I lose wireless charging. From there I moved to the 8 Plus, which was basically the same phone but heavier. Then after owning the XS Max I got sick of heavy phones and I bought an SE, which I am using now. A phone that does everything, yet is so small and light that I am barely aware that I have it, feels like the future. This idea that denseness and heaviness make an object feel more “premium” is ridiculous and I hate it.

I personally wish my pro max was actually bigger, I use it in place of an iPad and am often streaming Netflix whilst playing on the PlayStation.

dang bigger? LOL Just get an ipad mini

Devin convinced me. I got a regular pro yesterday and loving the size. I forgot how portable a smaller phone is. It is sooooo much better to carry around. I don't feel like I'm carrying a brick all the time.

I have an iPad Pro at home if I want to watch media so that isn't a problem.

I have to disagree as to it being redundant. I’d much prefer a small phone when I’m out and use my iPad Pro mainly at home. We also have 4 tv's in our home and don’t consider those redundant either.

I share your exact thoughts. I’m actually downsizing my iPhone to whatever is the smallest iPhone in Apple’s lineup announced in 2020. I can just resort to my iPads/Laptop for anything I need for larger viewing of content.

Interesting thread

Me preaching small iPhones for years carrying the 4” line-up and then the X I just got the Pro Max and having a hard time getting use to it

I have the Xs max in an Apple silicon case and had Apple install a screen protector.

Last August I stupidly placed my phone on a 5 foot window ledge thinking the gripping silicon case would keep it there. As I walked into another room to put together some furniture I heard a thud and went back to see what happened. My phone was laying face down on floor. Expecting the worst I picked it up and didn’t see any damage. I took off the case and no damage anywhere. Everything worked and is working properly today. Either I was lucky and/or the phone was made very well.

OP

I totally understand your situation as I'm in the same boat. Went from a X to XS Max and then onto the 11 Pro Max. Its been what 3 months since the 11 Pro Max launched and the weight is actually getting to me. Initially told myself I'll get used to it but now as time has passed I'm really looking at the 11 Pro as the go to device.

My only gripe is that I won't be able to return the 11 Pro Max so I have to first find a buyer and then move to the smaller one.

But then again I also fear that I'm going to miss the bigger display, so yeah decisions decisions!

I have an 11 Pro and a 2018 iPad. My iPad definitely gets more usage. Curious as to why you think there’s no point in having an iPhone and an iPad?

Bought 8 plus and one year later I passed to XS. More easy to hand and to have with me.

For iPad Pro I bought 12.9 for media consume and study with pdf reader and I'm really happy about that.

Totally different device's function for me.

Some people are honestly content with just using their phone for everything they need. I, on the other hand, love having both. The largest phone can’t replace an iPad, so I’d rather keep a smaller phone on the go and use my iPad at home.

I had the 11 Pro Max and also switched back to the 11 Pro and am happy with the choice. I much prefer the lightweight phone. The Max is nearly a half a pound. That's just a bit too much bulk for me.

And as previously mentioned, the 11 Pro is possibly the last 5.8" size phone.

I love having both as well. While there is some overlap in functionality between the two they both excel at things that are very different to each other.

Some like the single "do it all" device while others will have multiple devices that excel in their purpose. I would be in the latter group. Like why would I ever enjoy video/content on a 6.5" display with a notch instead of a 10.5" display if I had the choice? The difference between a 5.8" and 6.5" display isn't enough to change that experience.

I’ve had the large size since it was an option and I did the same this year. I downsized from last year’s Max to the standard 11 Pro and I’m ecstatic. All the consumption of media I do that benefits from a larger display, I’ve got the iPad and MacBook Pro for... or the TV. I’m a ‘he’, so no bags or purses were with me daily so I was in the daily habit of taking it out of my front pocket and placing it somewhere precarious in the truck... even the latest vehicle designs are unaccommodating to the bigger phones!
I don’t miss the larger phone at all. Of course, this is the year of the massive battery gains - especially in the junior pro - so I/we may have gotten lucky there too.

it’s nice using one hand and feel safe

I did the exact same thing with my 8+. I got tired of the weight and footprint such that by the second year of ownership, I just leave it in the car when out shopping.

Going on a week with my first brick Pro Max and I want to get use to it. While using its awesome but the burden of carrying it is what I can’t get use too

It took me a while to get use to my X after a 4” 5-5s and SE run but it grew on me so I’m expecting the same I hope

Personally I'd prefer to have the iPhone 11 Pro and then an iPad Mini for anything that doesn't require the horsepower of my MacBook Pro. That seems to me to have the best balance of size, weight, and power as a setup. I also just really don't like big phones anyway from a usability perspective - if I can't use it one-handed then that's an issue for me. Even the standard 11 was too big, so the smaller size of the Pro was a big selling point, as were the telephoto lens and higher resolution display.

I really agree with most everybody on this thread, yes the Max screen is nothing less than amazing. Yes my Xs Max was my favorite until I got the Pro Max and I liked that even more, BUT, it’s a heavy phone to carry around. I kept thinking about the regular sized version the whole time I had my Max sized phones. Now I’m glad I switched, I’m impressed with the Pro. Even the battery life is great. Watching my wife using her Xs Max, do I like/miss the screen size, yeah kinda maybe, but when my Pro is in my pocket, or when using my phone more securely with one hand, I’m happier now. We’ll see what happens next time I upgrade my phone, who knows, maybe I’ll go big again. Hmm...

Other than split screen and widgets on the home screen what does it do that the iPhone can't!? When I need to do something serious, then I whip out the MBA.

No need to worry about plug-ins and websites not being fully compatible. iPhone + Mac > iPhone + iPad.

I used to say the exact same thing before I got gifted a new iPad mini. The thought that there was no space between the phone and laptop, and desktop on top of that, ran for quite some time. I actually intended to sell it but decided to mess around with it a bit given it did come to me free of charge and it was the perfect opportunity to see if I'd actually use one… aaaaand 4 tablets later.

Try to study 1500 pages book about brain microsurgical anatomy and let my know if your iphone/macbook is more comfortable than an ipad ;)

For you iPad isn’t useful, for some one else could be different :)

The iPad is the best eBook reader around and I actually would like one to make beats exclusively in Garage Band.

However, neither of those two things are a pressing need for me right now. Hence no iPad. Everyone, please enjoy your iPad... YOU know what's best for you.
