Old and new…

So, some of you may know that I upgraded phones recently. In that deal came a harman/kardon BT speaker.

My son's TiBook does not have bluetooth, so I got him a dongle (just like the one for my QS, but with shorter range) and now both his TiBook and my Quicksilver can use this speaker.

This is what I love about Apple (most of the time). Two early '00 computers using a 2015 BT speaker!

I did not know you upgraded but congrats on your new 6+. After my 5s run in with the lawn mower I am rocking an iPhone 4 with iOS 6! Got to love the old design in comparison to iOS 7/8.

Well, I stopped the mower to reply to a text message. I noticed that my little brother was not around so I went over to the driveway to see where he was. I left the phone sitting on the seat of the mower with the engine running, which caused it to vibrate off the mower and into the grass. I came around again and CRUNCH! Note to self: an Otterbox Defender cannot defend against the spinning blades of a lawn mower...

What is wrong with your mower?

Yep. About a week ago.

Wish my iPhone 5 still had iOS 6!

That's.... Interesting but I've been at my grandmas farm for the past two days and there is this old mower that has been sitting out for like 15 years. I wanted to see if it would run. I put some gas in and starter fluid and it came right on, but after 30 seconds the engine cut off and there was gas coming out of the exhaust. I'm guessing that there is something wrong with the needle valve in the carburetor and the rubber for the primer button is shot. I'm pretty sure that's a combination of the two for why it's not running. It's a western auto mower if you were wondering. I also got an old radio it's a Philco and sadly it dosent turn on but I'm going to try and fix that.

I would begin by changing the crankcase oil and doing a full carburetor rebuild. Those mowers only have a single jet so the primer takes the place of the choke entirely. Most of them are also gravity fed so I assume that is why you were shaking it around to get fuel into it. You also may need to verify that the valve lash is correct.

I was going to change the oil but I don't have any laying around surprisingly, I did take apart the carburetor yesterday but the o ring was split in a spot so the seal isn't tight and oil comes out of the seal

That may be part of the problem. These engines use vacuum pressure essentially to suck the fuel and air mixture in from the carburetor. Any break that allows more air would cause it to pull more fuel in and run rich. I bet it will backfire out the exhaust if it ran long enough. Also, after you get the carb rebuilt verify the engine RPM with a tach. Most of those 4 strokes of that era do 3000-3400 RPM depending on model.

Yep we are gonna leave soon so I'm not too sure if I can fix it today, let alone all this trip. I really don't know if I'm gonna be back up here this trip

Either way it is a fun Saturday afternoon project. With the price of used push mowers down so much it may be better to get a good used mower off Craigslist if you need one rather than fixing that one.

Yeah it's just a fun project and the mower hasn't been used in a while. I wanted to use the motor in a bike as a fun project

In most bike and go-kart applications you need a horizontal shaft motor.

Yeah I just wanted to mess around with it. I was going to put the gear for the pedals on the bottom of the motor, where the blade would be, and then use the chain to connect it to the back tire

The issue is that a push mower engine has the shaft on the bottom of the engine so you cannot hook it up like that.

Yeah, but couldn't you mount it sideways?

No. Not only would there be fuel issues but also those engines are splash lubricated. Placing it on its side would likely destroy the engine from lack of oil lubrication.

When I was a teen in the late 1980s my parents decided to participate in a host program for Japanese teenagers. If you are not familiar with Japanese custom, it is customary to give gifts to your host/hostess when you visit.

The gift I got was a Nintendo Game Boy. Keep in mind that at the time I got this gift it was sold in Japan, purchased in Japan and brought to America by the Japanese teen that we hosted - all before the Game Boy was released for official sale in America. It does NOT have a US serial number and on the back it says "Patent Pending".

It still functions and we have a bunch of cartridges for it. I bring it up today because there was some housecleaning and my son found it - again. He played with it religiously a few years back.

How's that for retro gaming? 😉

Man I remember playing for hours on my old Game Boy. Something so simple yet addictive when playing a good old game of Tetris!

I love the Harman Kardon speakers!!!! I have the Soundsticks II(that I found at Goodwill for super cheap) and they sound great. That BT speaker is one of my personal favorites and at least mention it to customers when they come into Best Buy looking for portable audio stuff.
