I occasionally see glimpses of modern cartoon. And no wonder kids these days are hyperactive basket-cases! What's with all that screaming, running, shouting, flashing lights? Why doesn't anyone ever _talk_ in the cartoons anymore, why do they shout?

When I was kid I watched classic Disney cartoons. the difference between those and modern cartoons is HUGE.

Meh, there's nothing charming about these new cartoons and they all look like they've been drawn in Flash. I'm not keen on them. Seen a couple on Nickelodeon and Disney Channel if my sisters commandeered the TV for dinner.

The last genuinely funny cartoons IMO were stuff like the Angry Beavers, Jonny Bravo, Ed Edd and Eddy, The Tick and them smart little shorts like The Cat Came Back (the very next day). After them, say 2001ish, nothing really stuck for me.

Thundercats! Earlier today at the office I was talking about this, and half of the people in my department didn't know what I was talking about! Crazy.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was probably my biggest obsession as a kid.

I also quite regularly watched:

He-Man
Transformers
GI Joe
Flinstones
Jetsons
Chip and Dale (not the strippers!)
Talespin
Ducktales
Loony Toons
Tiny Toons
Animaniacs

I'm sure I'm forgetting some, but those are the ones that really stick out in my mind.

The only cartoon I watch nowadays is Avatar: The Last Airbender. It's freakin awesome, and it has great replay-ability!

Other than that, most cartoons today are rubbish.
I , for one can agree to the changes in cartoons from then to now. The cartoons suppose to be fun, senseless entertainment and not ever focused on what cartoons are today. The todays cartoons are "soft" as someone once referred to " watered down". I for one have to agree. The power puff girls don't have any turmoil. They seldom fight a villain but become friends with the villain. Seriously, an educational, moral support from a show that supposed to be fun and senseless to watch on weekends to unwind from school. The classic cartoons are the best.

First off, holy smegging thread revival! And looking back at it, I can see my attitude with this back then (before kids) and now (with kids). Completely night and day.

Now, with that said:

Some of those classics have been given a reboot; some for the better, some not so much at all.

Voltron? the new series is amazing. That's some serious adventure with a killer storyline.

Thundercats, Ho? Just no. Just bloody no. Same goes for Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and I'm not a TMNT fan at all.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power? I'll give that a chance, as Melindy Britt is all for it, and Erika Scheimer endorsed it.

But others that have been given a good reboot are damned good. The Magic School Bus Rides again is every bit as good as the original (and still even has Rita Rudner in it). My kids very seldom watch anything Transformers that arced out of Bayformers; In fact the only decent series that came from that is Transformers: Rescue Bots. Amazing cast in that: Maurice LeMarche (Brain from Pinky and the Brain), LeVar Burton, Peter Cullen, Tim Curry, and Michael Bell (Duke from the original GI Joe). I actually like the fact that they are rather more non-violent compared to the other TF series currently out, but have a much better storyline than those out.

Those, to be honest, are the only new shows that we watch (new being relative; new is > 2000 ). We still stick to the classics: they've been on a Voltron and classic Thundercats kick, and after not having it on in my area at all growing up, I'm binge watching Robotech (and just realized how much of a jerk Minmei was to Rick, and Lisa deserved better). after that, Classic She-Ra.

Well, I can't really say that; there is some new slapstick comedy a la Tom & Jerry out that the kids like: If you have Netflix or even youtube it, you'd like Zig and Sharko, or Oggy and the Cockroaches.

Hey, welcome aboard!
Thundercats are on the loose, Thundercats are here!

I like some soft cartoons, too.

I don't think anyone's mentioned:

Huckleberry Hound
Yogi Bear
Mr. Magoo
The Pink Panther

And yeah, Wacky Races and Johnny Quest. Like mysterytramp, I still remember that giant eyeball/spider thing. When I was a kid, that was the freakiest thing I'd ever seen.

These (apart from the classic Disney cartoons) are about the only cartoons I have heard of that have been mentioned in this thread.

And these were funny.

Anyone remember Top Cat? I enjoyed that.

I grew up with the mid/late 80s and early 90s cartoons, so those resonate with me.

As far as “modern” cartoons, I love Phineas and Ferb. I’ll watch that one even without the kids.

I grew up in the 80s and 90s....
80s were... He-Man, Dinosaucers, TMNT, Ghostbusters, Thundercats, Transformers, Mask...
90s were mostly Disney.... Gummi Bears, Ducktales (the recent remake is pretty cool too), Talespin, Rescue Rangers, Marsupilami.

Heaps of Tom&Jerry through it all :)

I took a class in History of Animation and I have to say today's cartoons can't compare to the early cartoons. Max Fleischer (Fleischer Stuidios) that brought us rotoscoping and his most famous cartoon (Popeye the Sailor), plus a lot of great animators. However, the greatest animator of this era had to be Walt Disney with his creation of Mickey Mouse (who made his first appearance in "Steamboat Willie"). There's a lot of great animation of that era and there's good animation even today.

Wow, it’s fun to see an old thread of mine resurrected. And, what a good conversation that is still relevant almost a decade later. Hands down our favorite current cartoon would be Teen Titans. I’ve heard good things about the new Voltron though so, I’ll have to check that out.

old is always better... New ones kinda turn them into possible better adventures etc, but the story is wasted/off beat..

Loony Toons, He-man, Teenage mutant ninja turtles (characters look noting like the originals, their just too strange),

Back we go again! And again, a lot has changed that I've given some extra thought to, and I have to say some of them have really grown on me.

First: the new She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. 80s purists were always gonna pour on the purist with this, but I have to say that instead of following the model of the cartoon is just a big advertisement for the toys, the animation is less "body" objectifying (let's face it; strapless bodice, white skirt, legs and stilettos? do we need to go any further?), but they concentrate more on character depth and plot lines, similar to how Voltron: Legendary Defender did. This has really come out well, despite that purists are gonna pure.

Another new show that really caught my attention, especially since it has just enough tween drama for the girls and superheroes action for the boys (that sweet spot that Jem and the Holograms found) is Miraculous: The Adventures of Ladybug and Cat-Noir. Again, decent plot line for the kids to understand (good/evil/good prevails for the boys, female lead with puberty/pre-puberty drama for the girls, with a sympathizing underlying plot for the bad guy), the twist being that the bad guy is actually one of the superhero's father.. really good stuff, plus really good animation. Plus, the characters make great bases for cosplay!

Those I'd recommend that are new. after that, I really see anything else, especially after Voltron ended. Speaking of, get those while you can, because since the series is over, who knows when Netflix will pull them.
