Should be that easy, Apple.

Looks like that's another issue I'm going to have to add to my list of things to watch about SL to see if they get fixed before considering an upgrade.

Yes to me the new Expose seems almost like a revert back to the way Vista tried to copy Expose.

Oh Hardly. you can still click directly on the window to bring it to the front. Flip3D on the other hand was cmd-tab with stupid graphics.

Not to be a pratt, but you can click directly on windows in Flip3D too. It's still awful, though.

I've got a background in HCI research, specifically in task switching interfaces, and I've gotta say from my knowledge the new Expose fails.

It seems like Apple have tried to target spatial memory with the new Expose (an area where the old Expose was lacking thanks to its rather chaotic resize etc algorithm). The new Expose is a little more stable than the old one when you are working within a medium number of windows.

However, because they *move* windows to targets, and *change* the position of windows, Expose simply won't allow spatial recollection in most workspaces, reverting to a visual search.

The old Expose was a trade-off, because windows resized proportionately, and your brain would 'intercept' the animation based on your knowledge of where the window was and approximately how big it was. So it didn't utilise spatial memory so much within the task switching interface itself, and instead relied on different cues. Snow Leopard's expose removes these useful cues and replaces them with ones that would work in a different situation, but don't in this one. Bad call, Apple.

The other disappointing aspects of Snow Leopard's expose are a) that in the single-app version, all other app's windows disappear - which is highly frustrating, and b) that dock-expose can't be activated by a hover and button press - holding down for a second or two slows workflows down dramatically.

It seems to me like Apple need to invest a little more in HCI research and evaluation of these interfaces before they pump them out. Then they might find out bugs like the attached image. Sigh. Not to mention the bloody app incompatibilities I'm experiencing.

Kinda regret installing SL right now...

The old way seemed more natural first but I like this now that I have gotten used to it. The only problem I have had is when I try to throw all my windows off the desktop. Sometimes they don't come back until I use the command to put them there.

I see what you mean, but the new Expose is not stable when using Spaces. While the virtual desktops are shown, Expose does not keep the usual layout.

I'm glad I found this thread. Snow Leopard's Expose is driving me up the wall.

On Leopard, the Expose window scaling and positioning is intelligent and makes a lot of sense, like the "Spatial Finder" concept thrown around by ArsTechnica's John Siracusa. It's so easy to find the window I am looking for.

Now in Snow Leopard, I have to squint to find the window from a whole lot of equally sized thumbnails. No fun when the browser windows are the same size as the Stickies.

I for one have bought Snow Leopard, but have not installed it. I waited until the first update came out to buy it.

But after reading about this different arrangement of expose windows, the blue window outlines, and many other problems and glitches people are having with SL installation in general... I am not going to install it. At least not until Apple fixes these things, and makes the window sizing an optional preference, which they may not.

In that case, I guess I just wasted $30.

I love Apple, but this is unacceptable. They seem to have "pulled a Microsoft" and come out with SL before it was ready.

Very disappointed in them right now.

Glad im not the only one that hates it. Its just so inefficient. I HATE the way it works with the dock too, very annoying. why on earth would I want to expose a group of windows?

Sign me up for the club.

When I first saw it, I thought it was neat - the previous expose was a little disorganized. But then I started to notice that I'd get lost when I got several windows open, where before I almost never got lost. Reading this thread, I realized the culprit - the windows sizes aren't proportional!

Why did they even try to mess with expose? It was near-perfect before! I'm perfectly fine with the blue borders and names under the windows and all that. But make 'em proportional, so it's easier for me to spot which window I want instead of squinting at the contents!

Well, Exposé is an actual application... if you go to the applications folder you'll se an app called expose which is about 400kb... I could upload it and someone could try to replace the snow leopard one with it... :)

that's an interesting thought. theres a SLIGHT chance it would work although i highly doubt it. i'd be willing to give it a shot. i dont care if i break my snow leopard, im going to downgrade back to leopard anyways. i hate the new expose and the preview sucks as well.

I got to say, they ruined the most useful OSX feature for me by making the expose windows all nice and neat. It's a lot easier to find what I am looking for by just looking at the size/shape of the window. Now they're all roughly the same and I have to look at the tiny contents to figure it out or worse yet, the window name. Productivity has certainly gone down because of it.

Going to try reverting to the old app but doubt that will "fix" it.

Chrisi29 and hari-bhari. To change the (ugly) blue glow in exposé you need to change a .png in Dock.app, so I doubt changing the 400kb Expose.app would fix it.

ANYWAYS, please tell us if ANY improvement happens downgrading Expose.app.

I sent a feedback to Apple but I doubt it a change will occur. I hope some good programmer could find a fix for it.

This Snow Leopard reminds me Vista...

Ok, lets give it a try shall we?
Here's the old Expose app from Leopard!
Hope it works xD

Dock.app is in:

HD/System/Library/CoreServices/

It's around 4.5 MB zip compressed. I don't have it because I am using SL.

I'm torn. I like the new expose in that I like having the ability to see minimized windows/apps, but agree that it coiuld be a pain if you had a lot of minimized apps. If there were an option to turn off 'show in expose while minimized' for each app, I would be happy.

I personally disliked the different sized winodws of 'old' expose. Made me think that someone had upchucked on the screen.

Tom

I minimise into the applications icon rather than a new one in the dock so i like it, i really like the new expose.
Sorry but I vote that as the gayest feature of SL. It does the same thing as hide, but now there is a checkbox for it. A checkbox for classic exposé behavior (&/or option for Exposé to show all windows from all spaces) would have been more useful.

To each their own amigo. There are keyboard people and mouse people.

I haven't gotten SL yet, but if the windows are no longer relative to their size outside expose, I can imagine it being a pita.

Are their screen shots of the "new way"?
I am a keyboard person but prefer the hot corner to invoke Exposé. As mentioned, it's just a finger flick. Even as a shortcut aficionado, I recommend using those hot corners (except top/left, as this hot corner could be invoked accidentally while aiming for the :apple: menu).

Has anyone had any luck installing the old Spaces? I can't stand the new on and I couldn't find anything online.

Ridiculous

This further displays how crazy the new exposé is. Not only can you not keep track of the windows on one screen. If you try invoking spaces it'll rearrange them all over again.
The sizing when a contact list is three times the size of a browser window in the exposé/spaces screen, too is just crazy.

I don't think that the proponents of new exposé can appreciate the speed at which I used to be able to work with the old one.
And I seriously cannot see the reason for there not being an option!

I see what you mean, but the new Expose is not stable when using Spaces. While the virtual desktops are shown, Expose does not keep the usual layout.

i tried it, no luck . behaved exactly the same. i think the best thing to do at this point is to just submit official feedback. if enough people do it, theres a chance itll work. i talked to an employee on the phone in the engineering department when i was reporting a bug, and she said she also doesnt like the new way. she said that the engineering department does review all of the suggestions and feedback, so if they see it enough times there is a chance it could be done. does not hurt to try!
