The OLED in iPhones is hands down in my opinion is the highest quality OLED in phones available

Can’t wait to see what they’ve done for the iPad, kinda ok with waiting longer now for Apple tablet/laptop OLED

Don’t forget that Apple do R&D for OLED tech and they have some patents too, so it’s an on going improvement, should be awesome

I'm here for it. I won't replace my 2017 iPad Pro 10.5" until it (or the Air) goes OLED. In the meantime I'll continue to use that 2017 iPad Pro, which fortunately will get iPadOS 16.

I am not a content creator, and I have zero interest in mini-LED.

Isn't a better screen a given with a new model? Things you expect from a new model iPad and iPhone are faster CPU, improved camera, better screen, better battery. Seems like this is just stating the obvious that Apple is looking at improving their hardware.

That's what I've been waiting for since I got the first 10.5...
But what I fear the most is :

No, of course not.

And furthermore, this isn't just an incrementally better screen. It's a completely different screen technology, which for some users is an enormous jump in image quality. It's night vs. day, literally. (My iPad Pro looks good during the day, but not so much in the dark for content consumption. Mini-LED models are also not great in the dark. OLED is in a totally different league in this context.)

The company has not used this etching process to make the iPhone's OLED panel lighter since it already offered a weight reduction compared to previous iPhones with LCD displays and would result in a cost increase
Since when has a cost increase ever stopped Apple? Just pass it on to the consumer.

Fantastic. I don't need an iPad at the moment but they're looking like strong products with the new Stage Manager feature and proper "laptop mode" support.

I'll probably wait to get the OLED one then. That'll be the biggest jump. the mini-LED on the MBP is fantastic at the moment and honestly doesn't really have any issues (I'd never be able to tell it wasn't OLED if you didn't tell me) but knowing an OLED iPad would have zero blooming whatsoever and the power management savings that an OLED display would bring, would be a good step.

iPad Air Pro?
Kidding! I’m in the “drop the ‘Air’ moniker from the entire portfolio” camp - which I’m pretty sure is a camp of one. 😜

But a lighter Pro would be welcomed.
I would join your cause, and ask Apple to drop the Air moniker, definitely. Turn the MacBook Air into the MacBook, and make the iPad Air the regular iPad. But then, what do we do with the education focused base iPad? Oh, right, the iPad SE

The OLED in Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is the best one. It's 99.8% similar to the panels Apple uses, but technically it's better.

Is Jony Ive back?

Anyway, I find the current models so thin and slippery that I need a case to make it holdable.

Too thin means there’s nothing to grip!!
While I agree naked iPads are a little awkwardly slippery when naked, making them as thin and light as possible offers us options as to how we use them.

For my uses, I put a textured decal on the back, so when it's not in the magic keyboard, or laid flat on my cork deskpad (writing notes), it's got some grip to it for holding while on the couch. For those who want even more grip, there are countless options for cases and magnetic folios.

Were they to make them thicker and/or heavier, they would be too heavy to hold comfortably with one hand (depending on the model, of course), and would still be slippy to hold. This way, those who want more grip and heft can opt for a case of their choosing, while givingt others the option to use theirs naked (or almost naked, in my case).

Personally, I like the direction they're going in, given the battery life is as good as it is (again, depending on the model). However, as soon as they start to favor thin design over reasonable battery life*, I'm jumping to your side of the fence.

*I fully acknowledge that many would say we're already there, and that they could be a bit thicker to give more battery life -- I simply (and respectfully) disagree.

The difference between OLED and mini-LED is instantly obvious in a dark environment. Mini-LED isn’t even in the same league. If there is significant ambient light however, mini-LED sometimes may have the advantage.

Yep. MacBook and MacBook Pro. iPad and iPad Pro. iPhone and iPhone Pro. AirPods and AirPod Pro. iMac and iMac Pro. Etc. Doing so could open other platforms to entry/pro level tiers that may not have had tiers prior. Mac mini and Mac mini Pros(?). Pencil and Pencil Pro. Just idea that are certainly not bulletproof. Just seem a legit opportunity to return to a more easily distinguishable naming convention that continues supporting Apple’s new(er) “a device for every type of user” approach, that is obviously working very well for them (and their shareholders).

I hope this doesn’t affect the quality of other aspects of the iPad such as audio. Also, iPads like the Air have been notorious for bending.

I agree, but why stop halfway? Pods and Pods pro, no more airplay or airdrop either. 😂

Always found the hardware and software nomenclature overlap to be a little weird

So mini LED was just a stopgap on the way to OLED?

Every technology is just a stopgap until the version that replaces it.

Passive matrix LCD was just a stopgap until Active Matrix LCD

Active Matrix LCD was just a stopgap until Retina LCD

Retina LCD was just a stopgap until Mini-LED

Mini-LED is just a stopgap until Micro-LED or OLED

OLED is just a stopgap until Quad HD AMOLED.

And those are just displays; rinse lather repeat.

Ever since getting a OLED TV a few years ago, I've stopped caring much about improvements in raw image quality.

Basically the main thing I want now is cheaper pricing in larger sizes, and perhaps better motion handling.

So what's gonna launch in 2022/23 then? Nothing? Just an M2?
Apparently it’s just the M2, design change and MagSafe but no mini LED in the 11”

So mini LED was just a stopgap on the way to OLED?
Yep, it always was because Apple couldn’t get OLED for iPad yet and I’m glad I never bothered upgrading my 2018 Pro because it still runs fine.

OLED for iPad and MacBooks have been rumoured for nearly 2 years now and mini LED was a cheap stop gap to sell the product upgrade until OLED became available.

I’ll be waiting for an OLED iPad even if it’s another 2 years from now, unless my current one breaks obviously.
I wouldn’t recommend an iPad Pro to anyone until the change to OLED because the Air is far better value.

Doubt we’ll see the rumoured 15” iPad Pro Max until OLED either.
