There is a guide in the guide section to help with this problem, i think it involves holding down the lock button and home button at the same time until the screen goes completely black. Check the guide for details

What's DFU mode? how do u get there?
its just a restore mode
2 seconds on google:
Here is the easy way to do so:
Step 1. Turn off your iPhone.
Step 2. Hold Power and Home button, the iPhone should now be boot.
Step 3. When you see the Apple logo, release the power button but HOLD the home button.
Step 4. Open iTunes and wait for it to tell you in restore mode.

well guys i unbricked the iphone by going to apple.com there, they (apple) had posted the way to fix my error message and it worked so i did not need to take it to the apple store it get if fixed.

2. Connect the iPhone to your computer. Press the home and power button at the same time. Once the Apple logo appears let go of the power button, but keep holding down the home button

Dude, you don't need to touch the power button when switching it back on, just when your about to plug it into your comp, hold the home button, and it works that way as well. Just makes life simpler

I still don't get how anyone can claim the OP said anything other than his friends 1st gen iPhone was 2 days old. I re-read the original message like 30 times, and I am still trying to figure out how people got something different out of it.

My guess is that your firmware file is damaged because your having the same problem with both try re downloading the firmware file
