It isn't a problem with the CPU. Just OS X Power Management. My temps run from 104-115 F in Windows XP. In OS X it is 122-131 F (which is higher then it was in 10.5.2 which was closer to XP's numbers then now).
I've noticed the same thing. Upgrading to 10.5.3 on my last MBP increased the average temperature by about 7 degrees. I had never given a second's thought to how a os update could affect the temperature but it makes you realize how insanely complex an operating system really is.
Why hasnt Apple done anything to fix it? I really hate how hot my computer is sometimes.
I think its OS X and where it keeps the fan speeds based on temp. I am running my MBP Penryn 2.5 on my lap. For the last hour. 26% CPU utilization almost constantly on both cores. 47 degrees Celsius and the fans are at 2600RPM. This is without any paste change out. I am not charging the battery, or running off mains. This is also running VMWare Fusion with XP pro running on another "space".
I could get it lower if I changed the fan speed to a higher RPM. Lets try that real quick. 2 minutes of the fan at 3600RPM, and I dropped 5 degrees Celsius.
I could not hear a difference, but I do have the TV on.
I use Fan Control. I don't like SMCFan Control, I do nto want to manually change the speed, I want something that increases the speed if the temp rises. It just seems more Mac like.
In 10.5.2 the fans were at 2K RPM. In 5.3 it is the same speed. So why has CPU temp went up ~7-10 F?
This has been questions for the longest time now. When apple do address this problem, you will see Apple stock go up. Until then, it'll steady take over the world. 😀
If any of you do replace your thermal paste, please do yourself a favor and apply it correctly. Too many times I see people cover the entire core with a thick layer of thermal paste. All you need is, no kidding, about the size of a BB. Just press the heatsink on flat over the core and screw it on evenly (as in don't tighten one side down all the way then the other).
Anyway, I have a 2.2ghz SR 15.4" MBP and I get about 51c at idle. I'll probably replace the thermal paste when I upgrade the hard drive one of these days.
EDIT: Oh man, I just looked at the ifixit guide and realized you have to pull the logic board out and it basically sits on top of the heatsink. Looks like fun. 😉

Hello everyone. So I'm new to these forums as I just yesterday bought a MBP. I absolutely love the computer (my first Mac), but also had a question on temperatures. In taking stock of the temperatures everyone else has posted, I was quite alarmed to see the temperatures my MBP was reaching. With just firefox and ichat open, my CPU sits between 68-72 degrees C. Is this normal or am I just being paranoid?

That is a little high for just Firefox and iChat. You might have to check in with a near Apple Store. When I have Firefox+iChat+iTunes+Mail open I only get 55. Heck, I have those on right now, transmission, opera and iCal open and my CPU is sitting at 53C.
I did the same. Not even a rice grain. I mean it was just a small blob, sufficient enough I say. Hey my temps idle 33C. So I must of done something right!
All of these systems run at slightly different temps. I'm sure that reapplying the thermal paste correctly(assuming that it was just slapped on in about 2 seconds by a guy working in a production line), would make a difference in temps, but how many of us have the technical know-how to do so without risking destruction of a $2500 investment?

The system is designed to work within a certain spectrum of temps and that as long as I am within this range, I feel that I am ok. I only plan to keep my system for about 3 years, and I have Apple Care, so if anything goes wrong, they are going to fix the computer. So why take a change to ruin something that seems to be working fine, just to see a temp that is 7 or 10 Celsius lower, especially when i probably won't appreciate this difference anyways, unless I am monitoring.

In Windows, installing something like RightMark CPU Clock Utility will let you undervolt your CPU, potentially drastically lowering temperatures (much lower than you'll ever achieve with thermal paste) and extending your CPU's life.
The fans on my 1.6 GHz Pentium M (90nm) rarely even go on.. it's volted at .940v versus stock 1.308, and .700 on battery vs. .908. Saves battery life, too.

Close out Firefox completely and see what that does. FF is my main browser, but sometimes I notice that it pushes my temps way up. I will have a blank google page open, and listening to itunes or something, and I hear the fans boost up and feel the temp rise. Closing out FF and then opening it up again a few minutes later usually corrects the problem, and I am back at my usual 55C.
My MBP will idle at 43C with FF3 and MSN open, with fans at 2500rpm, and with them at 3500rpm, wont reach above 40C
Infact, atm i have FF3 open, and mail, and transmission background. 2000rpm, and its sitting at 37-38C, and has been for over an hours.
mines 2 weeks old.
So, is mine special? I've never seen it go above 65C When iTunes was running visualisations, and Handbrake was working.
PS. I live in england, room temp probably reaching 20C Max, doubt that affects it though.
