WiFi ...

Because the only phone line is down stairs next to the front door and my desk is upstairs so its much easier to connect and i move around the house allot too :p

54Mbps is only about 20Mbps in reality and that's only when you're right next to the access point.

N should be faster, but it also depends on your connection.

So is it safe to say that DSL is not ideal for websites that stream HD content?

My speed test results are terrible and Verizon say's i'm "maxed out", yet the test results in comparison to others average is much slower. Locally and nationally. Is there any way i can tweak this??

Ethernet is always going to be faster. There is no interference from other Wi-Fi, microwaves, cell phones, TV, etc. If I had a option, I would use ethernet. But in most cases Wi-Fi is good enough.

Wireless N although it gives me fits every other day due to the ridiculous firmware issues of the AEBS...

i am wireless almost exclusively. I will try the download tests, though - to see if there is a big difference...

Heres what i get,
On ethernet:

And Wifi

Something is seriously wrong here, do you have a B router or a bunch of B equipment?

Interesting that it is only 27ms vs 28ms of lag, I would say that's pretty good that Wifi is only 1ms slower then a cable (at least in this test)

wifi. I have the ethernet cable right there, but I never plug it in. The speed difference isn't noticeable enough for me to care.

i use ethernet, but only because i stream media to my ps3. 1080p being transcoded real-time doesn't like wireless, whether it's G or N.

i can say, however, that i'm on a 30/5 connection and i easily get my max speeds (27-29 down, 4.9-5.1 up speed tests) on wireless N. connecting to either an airport extreme or a buffalo whr-hp-g54.

I'm a Wifi guy, for both my desktop PC and MacBook. It's mostly because, like others, the router is in another room, lol.

This is a screen shot of how fast my internet goes even when im a floor down from the router.

wireless g penetrates the lower level of the house (where my desk is) better but when I'm upstairs I switch to N sometimes.

Sometimes I plug in for gig-E but only to do backups and stuff where I'm transferring to my server over the network.

but as you can see from the screen shot wifi works just fine at my desk :)

My xbox works fine down here on wireless g as well (even for streaming HD videos)

second screen shot is the speedtest on wifi all the way downstairs (im talking about 75-100 feet from the router)

Ethernet cable. Always ethernet cable. My wireless G network is way to slow. I got gigabit connection to the file server, and 30/30 mbps (fibre) out to the net. My wireless is limited to about 16/16 mbps. Even wireless n would be too slow when I transfer files to and from the file server. Wireless will always be slower and less stable than cable.

I'm usually running with wired connection when I'm at my desk, simply because it's a lot faster then my old 802.11g router. I'm however currently doing some restructuring work at home so I'm more or less forced to run wireless, except for the speed it's working really good. I've actually never had any disconnects while running on my home wifi network (Linksys WRT54GL, acting as a AP only).

I don't use either.
I share my hackintosh' webconnection to my Macbook pro with firewire.
The reason I do this is because I then don't have to fiddle with a cat5 cable when I want to use the laptop in target disk mode, which I use a lot.

Man, you guys and all your fast DSL speeds. I just moved and went from a 5 mbps to 1.4 mbps. The difference is drastic. Better than dialup still.

Wired at the old house and so far wireless here until I can set up my office, then wired primarily.

snip...

I also noticed that transferring files from my windows vista desktop computer to my macbook was alot faster on ethernet cable than on the wifi connection, even though my router supports 54mbps wifi

So are you guys satisfied with your wifi? Or do you use an ethernet cable for stability? Or am i the only one with minor wifi problems?

If that Vista desktop is connected via ethernet your transfers will be faster via ethernet especially if your Windows systems are connected to a GBe switch like we do @ home. Transfers on the local network are considerably faster over GBe than any wireless connection.

Cheers,

My general rule is to use ethernet for any computer that doesn't move (desktops, servers) and wifi for all portable computers. I will make an exception for my laptops, and plug in an ethernet cable, while at work (our wifi sucks there) and anytime I need to move large files or do something that would allow me to take advantage of the speed of a wired network.

Awesome

I just tried the test everyone seems to be using. I felt like my internet was running slower this morning, but my WiFi was almost as fast as wired. The upload was a tiny bit quicker wired, but download was the same. 29.86/8.3 vs 29.8/7.9. I am using an AEBS and my laptop is about 8 feet away on my desk. Probably just keep it wireless as that is what I usually do.
