But the iPad air is a consumer device that even dirty poor people can afford to buy because it is mass-produced in China by slave sweatshops workers. It's nothing fancy or exclusive.

It's still $800+ (for the 64GB version). I can't think of the last time I settled for an obvious imperfection on any product that cost this much.

Anyway, the inane comments on this thread are starting to overwhelm. I'm going for one more shot and if it doesn't work out, that's it for me and the iPad Air.

why stop at 8 though? why 8? why not 2, 3, or 4?

I do not think you will be happy. Even at $800 which you think is alot of money, you will never get perfetion in everyway. These "inane" comments might just be because it you . . . . . . .

I wish you the best of luck. The retailer should really ban you for life.

Yeah, because you know EXACTLY what I do for a living right? Stupid comments.

It's great how people who've never seen the issue would pipe in with some inane thought like, "just live life." Yeah, great advice. I spent over $800 on this thing - I'd like a screen that displays whites as white evenly over the entire screen. It has nothing to do with being OCD (largely because the problem is significant enough for anyone to notice). And it's not even something I spend most of my day thinking about. But it IS something that deserves attention on a public forum, particular for those who are experiencing the same. I could spend much less on a Nexus 7 with a nice uniform screen, but I like Apple and I'm thoroughly invested in the ecosystem. It's ridiculous that the competition can put out perfect screens for half the price or less.
tell us what you do. what did you do when you bought your car or your house?

Good luck mate :)

I hope you get a good one.

Not sure why people join a thread just to have a dig and yet again use OCD as a throw away illness. If someone has OCD they have bigger issues than the tone of their ipad screen........can we stop belittling the illness.

here's what you posted in another thread.....

"Just seems like you either put up with it or return it."

so why exchange 7 times?

"If I'm going to use a tablet, I'd rather have a large screen. This is coming from a mini and now Air owner."

If you really need something for work it's interesting that you came from an iPad mini...we all know they have screen and text fuzzy issues ;)

Thanks, I hope so too. Putting aside the seriousness of an actual diagnosis of OCD, this in and of itself has nothing to do with OCD and I think it's hilarious how some people dismiss this as somehow being my problem without even seeing the issue. No previous Apple products I've owned have had this issue and, as a matter of principle, I think it's ridiculous that I fork over this amount of money for a product whose primary function - a screen - is defective. For the poster above who asked what I do when I buy a car or house, this would be akin to buying a car with a steering wheel that shakes a ton when it gets to 60mph or buying a house with a leak in the master bedroom ceiling. Not a HUGE problem but that crap better get fixed before I take possession.

Why exchange 7 times? Because I fail to believe that all screens display this issue. And because I actually want an Air. But I'm close to just giving up on the Air and moving on.

The mini wasn't used for work and, in any case, the screen on the mini I have is perfectly uniform. Other than the resolution, it's a fine display. I suspect the issue has to do with the technology in the retina displays, as clearly I'm not the only one who notices the problem and there have been similar problems with the iPad 3, iPad 4 and the MacBook Pros. Just do a search.

i understand what the supposed issue is....but if it's really an issue why can't you return it and not buy the product until this "issue" has been fixed? You don't see anything wrong with going back and forth to the store a total of SEVEN times?? You don't feel embarrassed by that whatsoever?

So every house and car that you and your family and friends buy never had a single even tiny issue? lol get real man.

I agree with you. If it doesn't bother others that's great for them, but if one side of the screen is yellow, it's a problem. Best of luck with your replacement.

want or need?? lol

i don't have to do a search....it's every other thread just like yours. So if 7 is acceptable...why not go more and shoot for 10 or 11? I mean why stop now?

i just think it's being obsessed with trying to find the perfect one. if you've gone through 7, why is number 8 gonna be the magic one?

that is why most peeps think this is OCD. Most would have dealt with it or stopped on the 2nd iPad.

i couldn't get an iPad 3 with a good screen so i gave up. i bought an iPad 3 refurb towards the end of the year and the screen was perfect. so for all of the people here going through the screen lottery game all over again, just get your money back and wait for the refurbs to pop up on Apple.com. you'll be waiting at least a few months, maybe more though

Only problem is I'm sure a lot of these returns will end up in the refurb pile.

Can you post a pic?
I will try to sometime tonight, if it shows up in the picture.

EDIT: I cannot get it to show up in the pictures. I want to clarify that mine doesn't seem to have the yellowing issue or "bookspine" issue, it has this faint black bar running through the center of the screen. I only noticed it because I was scrolling a white backgrounded site and something kept distracting my eyes to the bar. The music app, settings, its when your scrolling that you notice it, because it is a distraction.

I got the iPad Air 128GB Verizon with serial number DMPLL. It is near perfect. Nothing in mass production is “perfect”. If there is a yellow tint on the left side horizontal, it is maybe 1-2%. Regarding the “book spine” shadow, same – 1-2%. I can live with those minor flaws.

they will, with the defective screens replaced with normal screens

my iPad 3 refurb has a perfect screen...i would know b/c i was one of the ones who was extremely unlucky in the beginning with yellow tint, purple tint, and horrendous backlight bleeding all over the place

the screen is so perfect i almost don't even want to let the device go when i get an iPad Mini Retina (that and the fact that i have this thing so jailbroken that i can basically use it like my personal computer with a bluetooth and mouse and virtual environments which wouldn't be possible with iOS 7)

I think for 800 dollars you should expect a user experience that isn't impaired by a yellowing on one half of the screen. Especially when the device is all about the screen.

We put up with imperfect software, buggy wifi etc, because that's the nature of the beast. Those things are accepted. A half yellow tinted screen is unacceptable and I find comments supporting Apple or calling those who return the items several times OCD or should be banned are in poor form.

And let me tell you exactly what Apple have to say on the issue: "That's not right." "It shouldn't be yellow." " We will replace it immediately."

That's from Apple support and Genius bar workers. They know it's a problem.

The serial Number means nothing. I've had both and they both had the exact same problem. But, you lucky bugger! Well done on getting a good one.
