My point still stands.

And why does that site have a huge line of text one character long?

what? you can get every OS microsoft offers plus office suites for $300. not sure with the one line, but i would just search for the action pack. I just brought it up because people like to flaunt the cost of windows software when it can be had legally for a great deal.

Look at how many people complained about the free iPhone OS upgrades...those are free and actually had new features and services. Slap a price tag on something and don't give any visual confirmation something's changed and the complaints go up ten-fold.

Anyone wanna take bets on how many average folks even know what UI means?

And I can get OS X and Apple's office suite, plus five applications whose Windows counterparts cost hundreds of dollars for $169.

Won't that be enough of a visual clue that something has changed? Or do users need more widespread visual changes (for no reason other than change for the sake of change, i.e. the SyFy channel or The Shack)?
Barely noticeable. It's somewhat like the many variations of the Aqua Blue background.

Software prices subsidized by hardware margins.

People will complain, no doubt. Same with the iPhone 3G .

"Dude did you see the new iPhone? Its the SAME THING!"
"Uhh, not really. Increased Processor speed, better graphics, more storage, HSDPA compatible, autofocus camera with video. It was actually more of a change than the iPhone 2g -> 3g."
"Dude Its the SAME THING i swear same case same screen same everything! What a waste of money!"

Haha, even with those changes I don't think its worth an extra £90 here in the UK since the original iPhone hasn't seen a price drop :S

please don't call icrap/work an office suite. so other than the OS, not sure what other applications your talking about. i think if you told people they could have windows server, 7 ultimate, office 200x, visio and project for $300 people would jump at it, oh and its all legit.

I'm guessing a lot of people are guying to buy the upgrade expecting some new things(even though they say nothing is new graphically) then get upset(on forums no less) about how much of a waste it is.
You're wrong. Those people that buy it are going to do so for all the tweaks done under the hood.

...But then, they'll complain about how ugly all the minor UI changes are and wonder why Apple just didn't leave them alone.

I am not disappointed. That would be when i tried out vista for the first time. I get disappointed when you demo something and promise great changes and leaps only to have a good computer turned into a slug. This has delivered on the promise of faster lighter stronger. That is all it said it would do and it does it 100%. That is the key difference in this release and most os x releases. The advertising if you have the right box matches the demo. I for the life of me can not get that bitter vista RTM out of my mouth how horrid it truly was and how horrid it still is, they took a product that i could use quite effetely and turned it into something i just had to skipp. I know this is a mac forum but the whines should be a min. I will say msft guys are chuckling saying it is nothing more than a mear service pack upgrade. I can see where they get it but then i remind them that 7 is a bandaide for there vista and some how that stop the argument.

The ignorant spazoids that will complain about Snow Leopard share the same ignorance of people that seem to think Apple computers are "expensive" and are so because of the brand.

Trust me, these people don't even know that they don't run Windows! I've had a young Best Buy rep say after buying my MacBook: "Wow, a Mac, aren't you excited? No more viruses no more crashing :D ...so what makes these different from other computers?" "They don't run Windows" ""

Yes..THAT kind of ignorance. Reminds me of the skinny white chick in that Laptops Hunters commercial "Why would you pay twice as much?" "I wouldn't!" *Three months and 6 bottles of Advil later* "Why didn't we spend twice as much?! WHY!!!???"

speaking of complaining, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the media criticizes Snow Leopard for not offering any apparent new features when compared to Windows 7. Then they will completely ignore the huge price difference and claim that Microsoft is now winning the OS wars.

Granted, this might not be the prevailing sentiment, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it on a number of sites. Hopefully they'll compare the actual products instead of feature changes from previous releases (i.e. Vista to 7, 10.5 to 10.6)

From what I've seen so far, I am a little underwhelmed (I know this is an under-the-hood optimization), but I'll probably be laying down the $29 anyway seeing as this might be the last OS release for my 32-bit core duo mac.

No it's not all legit. You're not being accurate at all. Not just anyone can get this and be legal. Did you read the eligibility?

The Microsoft Action Pack Subscription is designed for all businesses whose primary function is to (i) sell, service, and support or (ii) to build solutions on the Microsoft platform or provide solutions based on Microsoft products and technologies to independent, third-party customers. Examples of qualifying businesses include accounting professionals, consulting service providers, independent software vendors (ISVs), independent hardware vendors, large account resellers, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), small business specialists, support providers, system integrators, system builders, training providers, Web designers, value-added resellers, and value-added providers that sell more than 75 percent of their products and services to customers outside their own company.

Examples of non-qualifying entities include: nonprofit organizations, academic institutions, students, government offices, and businesses whose primary focus is not IT related. Specific types of businesses whose primary focus is non-IT related, but that have significant influence on technology purchases, may qualify to participate in the Microsoft Action Pack Subscription.

So not every business qualifies either. So, if your business does qualify, you still need a license for your non-testing (i.e. your productive) equipment to be compliant:

What kinds of software use does the licensing agreement allow?
The Microsoft Partner Program Agreement allows the use of Microsoft Action Pack software only for internal business needs, as well as for evaluation, demonstration, testing, training, and educational purposes. MAPS use in a production environment, such as in hosting a commercial website, is outside the scope of the agreement. To learn about the appropriate use of the software, read the Microsoft Partner Program Agreement.

Sure you can claim that you're testing things I suppose, but since you're an individual and not a business, you're still not compliant.

So it's not as legit as it seems on the surface. There's a reason there's a higher cost when buying licenses for production equipment.

I would be more concerned about the bugs and stability than 'UI' changes.

My guess is there will be a bunch of threads about how buggy and unstable Snow Leopard is once it hits.
