I'd definitely get one, but I don't see it happening. If this happens the 5c as it is would have to be discontinued as well... So I honestly don't see them discontinuing two different devices.

Sure you could say they can just keep the 5c the same just add touchID, but I don't think it'll happen ... JMO

We didn't expect them to introduce two new models at once but then the 5S/5C came out, who's to say they won't discontinue two models this time.

I hope they keep the 5S the way it is and just lower the price without adding the plastic. It's an exceptional phone.

Oh yes, I agree with that, but by this time last year we already knew there was a 5c coming. We has seen leaks of the 5s as well. Where are these new "5c" leaks ... If we are getting a new upgraded 5c.

I've seen the 4.7" leak and a back panel for a 5.5" phone that I personally don't think is coming this year.

So personally I don't see it happening, but that's not to say it won't.

----------

I think it's a little hokey personally, but it makes more sense than anything else

Exactly, why would it make sense to have two plastic phones in the lineup? It doesn't. It makes no sense to discontinue the 5c as it is now. Apple has put a lot of money, time, and effort into the 5c and the 5s. Therefore I see them both staying with a new iPhone 6 being released.

Also people believe that just because they discontinued the iPhone 5 last year that it means they are going to do that every year. Therefore to discontinue the 5s. The truth is the iPhone 5 had serious paint problems and Apple
Never got them right and I personally believe that's the reason the 5 was discontinued.

Because making a single phone mainly benefits Apple. It's more cost effective to build less models of the same phone. Users in each market don't notice this. There are a minority that will but they are still the minority.
Seems to me, we are talking about different things. Although there is common technology used in iPhone 5 and 5C, there are same improvements.
Maybe it depends on your location. In Germany and/or Europe the improved LTE connectivity is a big thing.

I don't think so. I reckon they're going to do a cycle of doing a C version of the non S phone every time the S phone comes out. That way it keeps interests up as it's kind of like a new phone launching. There's less hype around the S phones as the externals don't change. It also gives people more of a reason to pay the extra $100 to get the S phone if they don't want the wacky colours or plastic.

Also if they kept the 5C and brought out the 5SC it would mean most of their phones were plastic...
Or if they brought out the 5SC they would have to put the 5 back into production.

If I had to guess, I would guess that they will continue selling the 5s in its metal form. They've been making that body for so long now it shouldn't be as expensive to produce anymore. And I think cost of production was why they changed the 5 to plastic last year. At least that's the speculation I read. And the scuffing issues of the black 5 probably played a role too.

But that's just a guess. I wish I knew what Apple's plans were regarding this.

1) Big iPhone - $299 starting price
2) iPhone 6 - $199 starting price
3) iPhone 5s - $99 starting price
4) iPhone 5c - $0 starting price
5) iPhone 4S - discontinued

After this upcoming year, it is difficult to predict what will happen with the c model. The c model has had some success in some markets (decent sales in the US, strong in the UK, etc). I see them coming up with some kind of plastic casing (less slippery than the current c) and including more "standard" colors like dark blue, red, black.

This I completely agree with. I do however believe the "c" line will be updated every two years like the "s" line was. I also think it could be possible APPLE does away with the tick tock upgrade cycle they have been in. A lot of people complain so much about the same design for two years. This is where I think the "c" could come in at!

The 5s is art. It would be a shame to discontinue it. Better to just continue upgrading the internals. 256GB with A9 and three day battery life would be good. I'd buy that.

I expect the 5C to be upgraded to include Touch ID. Touch ID will be on all iOS devices by the end of this year.

The 5S will be discontinued/replaced by the upgraded 5C

I don't see it the 5C being upgraded for touchID because it would require the 64 bit SOC.

That leads back to the original topic of the 5S begin "downgraded" (if you consider it that) into a plastic housing.

I believe that the 'upgraded' 5C will just be the same as the 5 going to a 5C, so yes, a 5S in a new plastic shell.

I think that with third party access to Touch ID we will see it on all apple iOS devices by the year end.

I hope that the 5C will finally be priced to compete with Google's mid-priced contract-free Nexus 5 or Moto X. ($400 + $16/mo. = $$$$ for me)

I understand why you would think that the 5s would get put into "plastic", but I don't see it happening at all. I think Apple will run with this version of the 5c for the next year at the entry level position and see how it does. Then they will decide whether to update or what.

I personally believe the 5s will stay as is in this years lineup

Looking at it from Apple's perspective, the 5C was brought out because the cost of manufacturing the 5 was so high, that dropping it by $100 after a year would have eaten in to profits too much. Now the manufacturing line for the form factor of the 5 has been running for a couple of years, I expect the 5S to just drop in price (rather than go to a plastic shell) because Apple has made it's expected profit off that line. Any profit dip they get from dropping it by $100 will be offset by the introduction of the new iPhone. The new 6 will be a new manufacturing process, and next year we'll see the 5C dropped and a 6C emerge. So,

This year: 5C, 5S, 6
Next year: 5S, 6C, 6S

Do you guys still think they'll offer the 5S in 32/64GB rather than just 16GB?

I really like the size of the current 5/5S models and I don't want to buy a bigger iPhone 6 unless the features would make it worthwhile, but I would need at least 32GB.

What's your thoughts?

If there is indeed a 5.5" phone alongside a 4.7" I see 2014 as the year numbers go away. All new iOS devices go 64 bit and Touch ID.

iPhone Air
iPhone
iPhone C

The 5c isn't really a new model. To make larger amounts of the aluminum chassis available for the 5s and to decrease manufacturing costs, Apple re-released the iPhone 5 in a plastic shell. Since Apple is clearly sticking with an aluminum chassis for the iPhone 6, the 5s will probably be discontinued when the iPhone 6 is announced.

iPhone 5c - $0 with 2 year contract
iPhone 5cs - $99 with 2 year contract

iPhone 6 - starting at $199 with 2 year contract

BTW, the iPhone 's' and 'c' models are now stylized as lowercase, i.e. iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c.

I don't think they will call a 5S in a plastic shell a 5C is my point.

Wouldn't that be a bit confusing? Two 5C's that are nearly totally different?

Hard to say, because I've always felt that Apple introduced the 5c primarily to remove a potential production bottleneck by not having the difficult-to-manufacture aluminum shell from the iPhone 5/s shared between two different models. Tim Cook is a supply chain guru, and the 5c was a supply chain move, plain and simple.

I can see this going both ways, but I have a feeling that the 5s will carry over intact simply because I don't see Apple "introducing" a new plastic-bodied phone with 5s internals when they already have another plastic-bodied phone that they only introduced last year. Plus, the potential production shortage issue with the 5/5s would not exist with the iPhone 6, since it will have an entirely different outer shell.

I still think that Apple will still experience production issues since it's still using aluminum.

If they re-released the 5S it would have to be 5CS, which sounds kind of strange. 6C would make it sound better than the 6.

I don't think Touch ID will be on all devices this year either.

I think Touch ID is a major part of Apple's plans.

It may still be used as a differentiator and only available on the 5S (assuming that the 5C becomes the entry level model and the 5S sits just below the 6).

I can't see them putting Touch ID on the C, but what do I know!? :D

[Edit] - Just to add that I think the lineup will be this come September:

  • iPhone 6 (starting at 32GB).
  • iPhone 5S 16GB.
  • iPhone 5C 8GB (& maybe 16 GB too).

I think this one is going to be interesting to see what happens, simply because i can't see apple keeping the 4S, 5C, 5S and then introducing the iPhone 6 4.7" and 5.5"

maybe they will drop the 4S and have the 5C as the budget 8GB model and then the 5S becomes the lower price followed by the 4.7" iPhone 6 and then a more expensive 5.5" iPhone 6 (possibly called the iPhone air if rumours are to be believed)
