You can, if you really desperate for profitability; so you probably bite the bullet and go with MBA. I prefer going to the gym and be able to lift 2 more pounds, but going with rMBP FTW ;)

So would it be very very unlikely that a retina macbook air will be released in 2013?

I mean, have to say it is not the most stressful decision of my life choosing between these two excellent machines lol - but it really is now a compromise for me choosing one over the other.

A retina macbook air would tick all my boxes - screen, size, necessary spec (the power of the pro is probably unnecessary for me at the mo) and hopefully price (when compared to the rMBP, hopefully lol)..

Maybe we can get an IPS display with full HD resolution or the 16:10 equivalent.

It's not so much using retina and going non retina. It is using retina and then going to an out dated 1380 x 768 screen. It is the same issue with the ipad mini. It is ok to not be retina....just at least use a screen resolution that is not from 2005.

Not in 2013 but the 13" rMBP is only a little thicker and heavier than the Air it replaced. I won't go back.

I don't have a retina laptop yet (price) but I do greatly prefer my iPad 3 over the iPad mini. It's a super great lightweight tablet and I love the form factor but picking up a retina device totally ruins me for anything else. It's so addictive and it adds do much readability especially when working with text.

I haven't done the rMBP (it doesn't meet my needs at all), but I will say:

I don't like the Air's screen, not because of the resolution, but because of the relatively poor color and the semi-gloss finish. I am fine with my cMBP's hi-res antiglare screen. And I do have a Retina iPad and iPhone, and I am still quite happy using my iPad 2 when there's a reason to do so. So I don't think it's that "non-retina" is a problem, I think it's that the Air's display is sort of disappointing in terms of color and finish.

We have a variety of Apple products around.

I started forgetting where my cMBP was the day I got the rMBP. It is way too heavy and has an ugly, grainy screen in comparison.

Same with the iPads, I never even pick up the iPad2 if I can find the iPad3.

Owned a retina for a few weeks, then went back to my 17". No brainer for me. I MIGHT go back for Rev 2 once they get a decent screen on the thing with a GPU that can drive those pixels without all the lag and hiccups I had on my unit.

I can go back -- I do most of my web browsing on my retina ipad, and prefer to watch TV shows and movies on my big LCD TV. I mostly use the cMBP to store and edit media files, and I don't need retina display for that. As for web browing, as I said, I do it on my ipad.

I think it's really a matter of what you want your computer for. The rMBP would be ideal with those with some spare change who watch a lot of streamed movies. Since I don't do that the low-res cMBP doesn't bother me at all.

One model that DID bother me was the MBA in terms of screen. All the colors look so muted.

After using it for awhile I prefer it to other laptop screens, oddly more for the flexibility than the resolution itself.

That said, I am pretty much only using it when I travel or present, since at home or at the office it is docked to external displays. I have no problem using the external displays, they still look fine to me.

I think Apple is right that what is important it text/images looking clear. Sitting at desktop distance from my externals, they look great.
