Still not worth it. For professionals the 2016 models are going to be worth every penny.

Yes, because every generation that came before the Skylake processor was worthless. As a visual designer, I can say I do just fine with a 2015 model RMBP and a 2013 before that. I also work with people using "antique" 4 year old desktop rigs. Its funny how the biggest spec whores are people that either just surf the web or are a gamer (legitimate need)

Ah, yes. The professional who waits for such things as incremental updates, while earning a living on something older than the 2015 model that is just too slow for his or her needs.

At this point, the only "spec" I truly care about is the HD (256 is just too small), ports and battery life. Ram (as long as it's 8GB) and Processing speed bumps are kind of pointless these days.

Oh, these deals suck. They're just tryin' to sell old macs before new ones come, and then old macs become even cheaper. I made this mistake byin' kindle paperwhite for 100 with 20 bucks discount, and then in 2 month came new version, and old paperwhite costs 50 bucks now.

Dude, don't want to be cockey like the missus and what not, but after spending north 5G's on your journey to find the ultimate laptop, wouldn't it be time to get yourself some decent advice and leave the impulse buys to others? On the other hand, combined with the tax return and 10% it's a great buy though. But don't forget you'll get those extras also next month.

It's not really an impulse buy and based on a lack of knowledge. My needs have changed over time- more/less power needs, more/less portability needs. The products and their place in the lineup has changed as well. I generally buy a new computer every 2-3 years. I think I may have called my 15" MBP an i5- it was an C2D- that makes more sense. The computers I have listed her have been over the course of about 7 years. My Mac ownership dates back to the days of the 12" PowerBook G4.

I have long since thought 14" would be ideal size. My work computer is a ThinkPad T450s- 14" high res is a nice compromise between 13 and 15.

What is happening next month?

For those of you saying that a $300 discount doesn't make the computer worth it -- remember, you can buy this computer directly from Apple for $1,999. If someone is in the market for a machine with these specs and they need it now, they'd be wise to buy it from Best Buy today and save $300. End of story. Thanks, MR, for sharing the discount info.

I doubt the processor will be the only difference for 2016. I edit video full time and I just have a feeling that there will be some significant changes regarding the I/o and possibly a Retina display. Plus for video, especially AVCHD, processor is everything. My current i7 can barely play back two streams of 1080p video in fcpx. Im always going through hard drives so A 2016 model with the new I/o, sky lake, and maybe a new display to go with it might be perfect. I wouldn't consider myself a hipster...

Perhaps, but Skylake still won't be enough for 4K video editing so you might be better off waiting for Kaby Lake and hold onto your current machine.

Well I have a current 2013 i7 and technically my machine can play back two streams of 4K video but it definitely eventually slows down. I would be very surprised if a 2016 Skylake machine can't play back two streams of AVCHD 4K video without slowing down like my current machine, especially now that the iPad pro can edit 4K... I'm just saying with the MacBook being changed so much, the MacBook Pro will probably be going through some decent changes soon and the $300 savings isn't worth buying now.

Does this mean anything to you:

"...in a recent slide at its Intel developer conference discussing the challenges of 4K content, the company indicated that some content will require that the hardware can decode 10-bit HEVC content. In the same slide, Intel indicated Skylake would only be able to decode 8-bit HEVC content but that its 2016 platform would bring full HEVC/10-bit decode."

Not sure if that helps or not; I really don't care for 4K content.

We'll see. Apple has shown no interest in making a professional laptop for a couple of years. It seems that if you can make billions with Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit users why was time developing more complicated machines that don't sell as well. Based on the Mac Pro the professional development cycle is what, new models every 3 to 6 years?

Is professional the new word for hipster?

Full time wedding videographer shooting 52 weddings this year, I hope I'm not a hipster.

so a 1.1GB/s SSD drive speed and i7 quad cores with 16gb doesn't get the job done for you?

Not when the media is all stored on external drives and final cut X needs more than 16gb when editing HD content. Plus my current i7 struggles with more than one stream of 4K.

It's funny how i can edit HD content with 8 gig in FCX without issue....and even funnier how everyone is now a pro Needing to edit 4k content ....
People make it look like if you do not edit in 4k you are not a pro, in reality only the minority still need 4k content.

I totally agree.

ASUS and Dell are already releasing Skylake powered laptops. I don't know why we have to wait all the way until 2016 to get the updated version. I've had only 15" since the Powerbook days and used to upgrade every 2 years each time getting a ~1.5 year old machine most times. The one I'm running now is a 2010 as I kept waiting for Broadwell and that looks like it'll never happen which is fine. The SSD I put in it has given it life beyond its years. Being able to edit 4K seems like a big deal as video editing is about the only processor intensive thing I do and my personal belief is that consumer televisions will likely settle on 4K as being pretty much the end of the line as far as resolution for the foreseeable future (4K is already overkill unless you're standing right next to it basically). 4K video recording is now the mainstay on the iPhone 6S. Seems like an important ability.

I think a 14" screen with an extremely thin bezel (why do laptops need a bezel? - it's not a phone where you have to have somewhere to hold it without touching the screen) the size of the current MBPr 13" and a 16" approximately the size of the current 15" would be great. I feel like a 15" is just a little too big for my needs now and a 13" is a little too small.

Also hoping they'll bevel the edges a little more because the sharp corners on my MBP 15" cut into the circulation on my wrist or something. I've heard one other person ever complain about that so I don't think Apple cares enough to ruin the look they have going.

I imagine much better speakers. I too would never get less than 500GB storage as storage is something I can never get enough of it seems and as pictures and videos (imagine taking all your videos in 4K now!) get more storage intensive, a 1TB is probably what I'll end up getting.

From the reviews, besides hardware decoding, Skylake processor improvements will be minimal over Haswell and the power efficiency improvements won't make any functional difference since it's already 9 hours or something on the Haskell models. Apple's strange love affair with extending battery life on their relatively heavy MBPr laptops and making the paper light iPhones thinner and more useless battery life continues.

Maybe we'll get IGZO displays, maybe the new higher grade aluminum used in the iPhone 6S. That would be nice actually as my laptops do take a beating.

You do realize that while iPhones have became thinner, the battery life has been extended right? iPhone 4 4s and even 5 5s had similar yet lower battery life (with a smaller screen) and they were thicker.

The differences between generations is minimal nowadays. I had my previous MacBook for almost 7 years and my current desktop is past 6 years old now. I am more interested in platform upgrades like SSDs, wireless, and peripheral connectivity. I am looking at OWC for an upgrade to my current 256 GB SSD though.

I'm more interested in multi-host file systems available for consumer grade devices. I want my 4-bay HDD array with 2TB's to connect to my Mac Mini and MacBook Pro. That way I get faster speeds than a gigabit LAN to transfer my data and I don't have to worry about mounting/unmounting between devices.

I'm also waiting for the day when their laptop and desktop lineup has 32GB standard and can go up to 128GB so that we can load applications entirely in RAM (similar to ramdisk) so that applications are much faster, especially paired with TB3 or TB4 (future).

Can't really complain about speed with SSD we have today... not sure 128 gb ram would be that useful, unless you are doing some really amazing stuff....

My sources told me early 15"2011 2.0 i7 was the Best MacBook Pro ever! Every other model is just a downgrade afterwards! o_O

Yes, the SSD's are very quick. Especially compared to those from just 3 years ago.

As for memory, it'd be nice to have files accessed from there instead of disk. But then again, the bottleneck is everything else - including TB2.

At work, we are experimenting with TBs of memory as a storage device. Running SQL queries are near instant. However, still working out redundancy and other issues with our partner vendor.

All RAID-array SSD's are very nice and have come down in price to the point they match 10k spindle arrays. Having fast storage for multi-tenant clients is awesome.
