They also had a hit with Deeply Dippy so that rules them out as one-hit wonders, here in the UK at least.

Heh - I not only have the album, but I went to see them about 5 years ago. It was only 3 quid. :p

Number 1 was Kung Fu Fighting which none of us guessed.

I'd imagine the overall list will end up here on Channel 4's site

It was a little alarming how much some of the pundits raved about the songs. You'd have thought they were great classics rather than one hit wonders.

The most telling remark was from someone talking about Axel F when he said he reckoned it started a new era of 'air instruments' when kids played 'air synth' rather than 'air guitar'

That's weird I didn't even know there was a second version of "Spirit in the Sky" but Norman Greenbaum's version is definitely a classic.

I sang that one once on stage with my band "The Purple Flower Sect". We split up three weeks later. The Curse of that song strikes again!!

Still, at least it got rid of Gareth Gates :D

Since the Buggles was already suggested, I'll step into the Wayback Machine to retrieve.... "Winchester Cathedral" by the New Vaudeville Band. A certified one-hit wonder in both the U.S. and U.K., back around 1966.

Another from that era... "Psychotic Reaction" by the Count 5.

BTW, for extra credit, does anybody know which "real" band was offered the opportunity to become the New Vaudeville Band, but turned it down?

Da da daaaaah!!!! Surely the Bonzo Dog Do Da band? :)

I was going to suggest "Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves, but I checked Google and it appears they actually had a second hit and won the Eurovision contest almost 15 years after their first hit?!? Who'd a thunk it.

I was back on this side of the pond by then so what's Eurovision again? :p

Oh no!!!! You've revived such bad memories! the Eurovision song contest is an annual thing when groups/singers present their country's songs on TV. it is hosted by the country that won the preceding competition (Ireland was well pi$$ed off a few years ago, as they kept winning and therefore had to keep hosting it). The songs are generally --- awful (exception is that Abba won one year with "Waterloo"). Everything is so totally cheesy and --- just rubbish! Each country selects its song from an internal competition by public vote and each country votes, by telephone on air, after they have all been presented. That process is famous as the votes are announced in English and French; the expression "Angleterre - nil points" is part of our joke culture now. be thankful that you are not aware of this competition. :)

It's terribly good fun, because the host, Terry Wogan gets progressively drunker as the night goes on, and the songs are all entertaingly dreadful. The voting gets a bit political as well, for a bit of extra spice.

That is such a sad thing to read. Suddenly I feel desperately sorry for you and want to lead you to a newer, better life. :)

Too be fair, I was indulging in that other British pastime of sarcasm, but then I suspect you may also be. <head explodes>

I've only watched it twice, and I do remember being rather entertained, but then I was ver, verrr drunk. Maybe I'll watch it this year, for research purposes.

Haddaway - What is love

(theme from night at the roxbury)

and what about that..."you and me baby, we are just mammals so lets do it like they do it on the discovery channel" song?

and the "Lets talk about sex baby, talk about you and me..." song

and the "I smell sex and candy" song?

Don't do it!!!! *trying to talk someone out of jumping off a high building*
There's more to life - like watching paint dry. You're worth so much more. :) Sarcasm???? Never heard of it ---- where's my dictionary?

Is it really fair to call Salt N' Peppa one hit wonders? They had a fairly good group of hits in the US, at least...

Oh, but speaking of sex songs, do you remember, there was a group called LaTour or something like that, and a really cute song, "People are still having sex"?

More that I'm trying to forget. :p I lived in Europe from 1974-1984 and watched my share of Eurovision on TV.

From that era I also vividly remember what y'all called "It's a Knockout" and the rest of Europe called "Games without Frontiers"/"Jeux sans Frontieres" names immortalized by the Peter Gabriel song. (not a one hit wonder).

What? Kajagoogoo's "Too Shy" didn't make the list??

I'm glad to see that none of us on the other side of the pond mentioned A-ha since they've had so many other hits in Europe since "Take On Me" (good song, but not their best by far).
