As of today, there's just a month to go until the keynote event for Apple's 2023 WWDC event, which is set to take place on Monday, June 5. WWDC 2023 is going to be exciting, because in addition to iOS 17 and the usual software updates, we're also expecting to see Apple's AR/VR headset.

We thought we'd do a quick rundown of everything that's rumored now that we're at the 31-day countdown mark.

iOS 17

iOS 17 won't be an update where we get a major feature overhaul like iOS 16's Lock Screen, but according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, it will have some of the "most requested features" that iPhone users have been hoping for.

  • Dedicated journaling app for tracking and recording daily activities and thoughts.
  • Updated Control Center interface.
  • More functionality for the Dynamic Island.
  • More interactive widgets.
  • Search improvements.
  • Health app to expand to the iPad.
  • Health app will include new mood tracking functionality, asking users about their day and tallying up the results over time.
  • Health features for tracking vision changes.
  • Minor Lock Screen updates, such as font size tweaks and option to share Lock Screen designs.
  • Apple Music Lock Screen interface to possibly gain support for lyrics.
  • Manual adjustment options for App Library folders.
  • More streamlined and intuitive Wallet app.
  • Find My improvements.
  • Support for sideloading apps in Europe.
Note that some of these features, like the journaling app and mood tracking, come from reliable source Mark Gurman. Others, like the widget rumor and the changes to Dynamic Island, are from a source with a less established track record.

watchOS 10

We aren't getting notable updates to the Apple Watch hardware this year, but changes are coming in watchOS 10. This could be one of the bigger watchOS updates that we've had in recent years, with Gurman describing it as "fairly extensive."

  • A new widget system will make it easier to get to key information on the Apple Watch without the need to open an app. Widgets will be scrollable, and will allow glances at activity tracking, weather, calendar appointments, and more.
  • Buttons like the Digital Crown could be more customizable, with users able to choose to have a press open up the widgets interface rather than the Home Screen.
  • Apple could overhaul the Apple Watch Home Screen in some way, offering a more intuitive layout than the app grid.
Mixed Reality Headset

Apple's mixed reality headset, which could be called the "Reality One" or "Reality Pro," will be the company's first new product category since the 2015 launch of the Apple Watch. It will be Apple's second wearable device, and rumors suggest it is going to be packed with cutting edge features.

macOS 14 and tvOS 17

macOS Ventura will get a followup with macOS 14, but we haven't heard much about the update as of yet and don't know what to expect in terms of features. Headset support is a given, and updates on the Mac sometimes mirror what we get on the ‌iPhone‌, so we'll likely see the rumored journaling app available cross platform.

The Mac will get the same ‌Find My‌ updates, and if there are improvements to features like Siri and Search, those will come to the Mac too.

As for tvOS 17, tvOS updates are so minor in scale that we're not expecting much beyond minor tweaks and new screensavers.

--------------
I guess time will tell what shows since there is little insight via rumors. Hopefully Siri is expanded on tvOS as it is almost worthless due to its limitations in that example.

You know what would be great in iOS 17? If we could put normal widgets on the Lock Screen. The "Lock Screen widgets" we develop are tiny and not a great deal of use. Why can't I put a rectangular LS widget on the right of the widgets? Why can I only have one rectangular widget? What possible reason is there for that?

I wish Apple would stop making major OS releases every year. My company tests every piece of software we use before they allow us to upgrade to the next version of macOS, which means we get it about a month before the new version is out. I understand the reasoning for the tests, but it's a never-ending cycle. Just release a new OS every 18 months to 2 years. You can still release updates in the meantime that include new features and fixes. We just don't need a new OS every 12 months.

In software development terms, there's no difference between iOS 16.4.1 and iOS 17.0; it's just another version of the code. It's marketing. But it's also a PITA for us developers and companies who use their software.

Sorry, didn't mean to rant, but here we are ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

No way! I'm looking forward to the Macbook Air 15". I need a lightweight laptop. Macbook Pro is too heavy!
How much lighter will the 15" MBA be vs whatever sized MBP you have is?

13" MBA is 2.7 pounds (1.24 kg)
14" MBP (M2 Pro) is 3.5 pounds (1.60 kg)
16" MBP (M2 Pro) is 4.7 pounds (2.15 kg)

I've said it before, the 15" MBA will be about the same weight as a 14" MBP, give or take 0.2 lbs (0.09 kgs). If you have a 16" MBP, you really think an extra ~1.2 lbs (~0.54 kgs) makes it "too heavy?" Really?

That's the weight of a venti Starbucks beverage.

I fell the one thing they lack on which is odd is the user experience on Apple Music. Would love an update to this.

Moved over from Spotify cuz I feel the sound is superior with Dolby Atmos etc. but I feel Spotify is so much easier and more user friendly.

Well, more so it is thinner. I also want a Midnight color, Mac. The existing colors (Silver & Space Gray) on MacBook Pro are getting boring. It's not just the weight there are other things too such as the color (mentioned above) the size, how thin it is, compatibility, and so on. I just hope the new MBA comes with a 120 HZ Pro-Motion display.

I’ve been pondering this idea for a long time, I want a new computer, but I’m not sure if I want another desktop. I’ve thought about just getting an iPad since I don’t really need a full desktop with MacOS, but I worry it won’t be enough for what I need. So I’ve considered a laptop due to the portability, but a laptop seems too clunky and heavy to be truly portable.

So I came up with this, Apple could take an iPhone or a iPad mini, remove the screen, battery, cameras, and speakers, so you’re just left with a slim brick that’s pocketable. Now with all the space freed up by the removal of the screen, batteries, etc, they could use the M1 chip, put 8-16gb ram in there, and offer various storage sizes. Put a power port, some USB-C ports, and have it run MacOS, and boom, a fully pocketable and portable mini computer. Take it wherever you go, and then plug in to any monitor and power source and you’re good to go. Could use any Bluetooth keyboard and mouse or trackpad.

I wouldn't recommend getting a new iPad this year. I would wait for the 14" iPad which should be released next year.

That's wishful thinking. Apple would never ever do something like that. Especially with Mac's line-up sales being down. Also, Under Tim Cook's leadership, he would never ever allow such an idea. However, I will say.. Great idea and pure innovation but Apple is a Business and they have to make money to stay afloat in the market.

Better to order the MacBook Air 15" with me next month :)

For macOS my only wish is to be able to cmd-tab between windows of the same application.

For iOS my only wish is to be able to hear game sounds while my ringer switch is off.

Bonus points if they stop using California locations for macOS names. Big cats were way cooler and there are lots of better options.

That sounds suspiciously like my Raspberry Pi...
