Not going to be tomorrow. End of the month at least, maybe early October.

Definitely not tomorrow though.

A Merom "upgrade" at the same clock speed isn't really that big of a deal...same thermal characteristics, but you get about 10-15% improvements in real-world applications...that's nothing to write home about. That's like going from the 2.0GHz to the 2.16GHz....10% is the minimum speed increase before people can even tell the difference in speed...so most people won't notice the difference at all.

For me it's not really about the difference in speed. I'm sure I'd be happy with a 2GHz Yonah for the 2 years that I plan to use a new laptop.

But I'm a developer and it would be interesting to have a 64 bit cpu so I can test that on my existing laptop when Leopard is released, instead of buying yet another computer. So it's more about future-proofing than anything else.

Same reason that I'm waiting... I want to be buying a laptop which is going to last and will work well with Leopard and future OS versions to come, rather than having to buy another laptop and spend even more money when I need one for the 64 bit chip in it.

I sure hope there is something released tomorrow though because all this waiting needs to come to an end ;) If there isn't anything released before the end of the month though I think I'm just gonna have to go with Yonah.

MacBook Updates?

MacBooks have shipping time of seven days in US and UK stores. Core 2 Duo?

someone magically came up with the rumor that the new MB/MBPs will be announced tomorrow! thats lame!

from what i can see, there are 2 possibilities:
1. Apple will update their MB/MBPs after the end of the free ipod with mac promo (sep 16). it could be 17th or it could be 19th (tuesday). It will definitely be a silent upgrade.

2. If not around sep 16th, they will definitely accounce the new MBPs before holiday season (hopefully before thanksgiving) so that when people buy new C2D laptops as gifts, they would have the option of choosing an up-to-date mac rather than an outdated mac.

If none of these come true, then we can safely assume that Apple has something better in its bag. Maybe a new case or new design with more goodies like fingerprint recognition and stuff.

The bottomline is that our wait will only get sweeter as time goes on! ;)

What say guys?

If today's iPod keynote is any indication, Apple will just bump the MBPs to 2.16/2.33 Yonahs and these very forums will be ablaze with people yammering about how their speed bumped MBPs are coming soon.

I hope that Apple completely skips Merom for the MB and MBP and waits until whatever is coming next....that way, it'll be complete torture for all the people waiting...all the while, I'll be enjoying my MBP.

Yeah, I'm a bastard.

AH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Welcome to the >1% of people that actually NEED 64 bit....everyone else just thinks they need 64 bit because 64 is a larger number than 32, and they hear marketing folk telling you that you need it.

In reality, it'll be another 2-3 years before there's really anything that takes advantage of it, and twice that long before you really need a 64 bit machine or be left behind...of course by then, 128 bit will be on the horizon and people will be "waiting." Would I have liked 64 bit when I was buying my MBP? Sure, I'm doing some research with computations that have some very large numbers, and it would have been handy...but it wasn't a deal breaker.

The big thing people are waiting for (according to this forum) is a "huge" 10% increase and lower temperatures...of course, the thermal characteristics are the same per MHz, so really all that means is the chip is getting slightly more work done per clock. It's a nice upgrade, but if you NEED a machine, then you'd be silly to wait.

I'm all for getting 64 bit Macs in the hands of Mac developers. Let's see what they can do with them.

I went to the Dell website and selected a laptop with the Core 2 Duo in it. I made no customizations at all and it said shipment was around 9-27. It may very well be possible that we are looking at October.

I doubt "128 bit will be on the horizon" in 2-3 years, unless by your "horizon" you mean "the end of my career". Either then you have a very short career... or geez, I don't know.

Just as a heads up, 32 bit instruction sets have only come to x86 from 486. I can barely remember my first Pentium 120Mhz computer that was purchased like 13 years ago, so it is not like 486s are just a recently past memory either..

It wasn't all that long ago that people were complaining that the Pentium Pro was crap because it didn't run 16-bit software very well. The truth of the matter is, the majority of people will be running old software for the forseeable future anyway, so the only people who can really benefit are scientific researches, and developers, which make up a tiny fraction of the buyers. I'm all for 64-bit processors sooner than later, but what I'm trying to say is that there are many people who are waiting for 64-bit because it's being hyped. Most of these people who are waiting for it won't see any benefit at all in this generation. Their next machine after that will certainly be 64-bit, and by then, software might even start to catch up where it WILL be a benefit. Just look at how many people run Windows XP 64-bit...you can probably count them on your fingers and toes.

So, if you're an average user (like 99% of the people "waiting"), it's not really worth it to wait if you NEED a machine... If you simply want to be on the cutting edge, then you'll be waiting a long time because there's ALWAYS something new about to come out.

I agree with you on your first part, with 64-bit and all. 99% of people should not be waiting on new MBPs for the 64-bit.

But whether or not it's still worth it to wait? 64-bit doesn't have anything to do with that. Magnetic latches, potential MB-style hard drive replacement, potentially better GPU (mobile x1800? or nVidia equivalents), with the small speed bump bonus make it worth it to wait.

Wasn't the G5 64-bit?

It would seem they have had 64-bit machines for awhile.

That's all speculation though...the MBP may never get any of those things. We know that eventually the processor will be upgraded to the Merom, or the next one beyond that (likely Merom since the next is too far away to have a machine unchanged). We also know the features and specs of Intel processors and chipsets. It's likely that the GPU will eventually be changed as well, but not necessarily now, just look at the iMac. The only thing that changed was the CPU. Why would Apple not take advantage of simply being able to bump the speed/processor to the next one up instead of redesigning the whole thing? It's really too soon for that.

Plus I was going on why people were saying they wanted to wait....in most cases, they were only saying CPU. I'm responding to the people who are simply waiting for Merom, and not for other changes.

I'm sure the MBP will get 1GB ram standard in the next update as well. The macpro and iMac both have 1GB standard now so it only makes sense the MBP will follow.

I've heard this argument...

Apple have already announced that Leopard will be 64-bit native. I'm gonna go ahead and save you the work of posting to tell me how Leopard will also run on 32-bit processors. While it will run on both platforms, there will be a considerable performance decrease due to the system not having all of the processor power and memory addresses that the OS was designed to use available to it.

As for 64-bit software unavailablity... everything that ships with Leopard will be 64-bit, and I would assume Apple would update all of their other software as well. Plus, most of the apps that benefit most from 64-bit, such as modeling and video, already have 64-bit versions available.

Not to mention, one generation of processors always sells used for several hundred dollars more than the previous.
