As the 64-bit discussion goes, I only see 3 reasons to want it.

#1 RAM > 4 gigs (does not apply to a MBP)
#2 Scientific calculations (which is done by most on workstations or clusters)
#3 Dual botting Vista with EFI support. MS claims that it will only support booting Vista via EFI with a 64 bit processor, even though Vista RC1 boots fine via EFI with a 32-bit MBP

I don't really need a MBP, but I really want one. That's why I'm waiting for Meroms.

Also, I'd love for 1 gig to be standard and for the X1600 mobile to be ugpraded.

I think 1GB is standard on the middle and high-end options for the MBP.

I'm not in the market for a MBP right now, but it's interesting to wait with everyone else.

Yes.
My compost pile, if you don't mind.

I've heard this argument...

Apple have already announced that Leopard will be 64-bit native. I'm gonna go ahead and save you the work of posting to tell me how Leopard will also run on 32-bit processors. While it will run on both platforms, there will be a considerable performance decrease due to the system not having all of the processor power and memory addresses that the OS was designed to use available to it.

As for 64-bit software unavailablity... everything that ships with Leopard will be 64-bit, and I would assume Apple would update all of their other software as well. Plus, most of the apps that benefit most from 64-bit, such as modeling and video, already have 64-bit versions available.

Not to mention, one generation of processors always sells used for several hundred dollars more than the previous.

Performance decrease? Everything will ship 64-bit? What? Why? This doesn't make any sense at all.

Let's do an example. I have a program that does a whole bunch of 16-bit math (16-bit photoshop filters for example). So if all of my math is 16-bit, how does running on a 64-bit OS help or hurt the program?

If Apple ships all applications as 64-bit applications, what happens to all the users with 32-bit machines? I'll give you a hint: 1) They won't be able to run the application. 2) Apple will sell both a 64-bit and a 32-bit version (both Universal of course)...so we'd have 4 different executables in 2 different packages...and all 4 have to be tweaked and debugged and tested.

The vast majority of applications don't need 64-bits, and in fact won't even be able to take advantage of it. How will a 64-bit version iWeb be better than a 32-bit version?

Just look at the Windows side for a moment...very few use 64-bit versions of Windows....and of those who do, very few have 64-bit versions of the software that run on it. Most of the video and modeling, etc is done on 32-bit versions of Windows and appropriate software.

All I'm saying is, don't get swept up in the hype...they know they can sell numbers...people who have no idea about computers can see that 64 is bigger than 32...SO IT MUST BE BETTER. In reality, it will be many years before you have to have a 64-bit processor. Look how long the transition from 16-bit to 32-bit took. We're probably only half way through the transition... The SPARC went 64-bit in 1994, the Itanium was 64-bit in 2001 and the Athlon 64 came out in 2003. The first two are hardcore workstation/server chips, and it has only been recently that 64-bit in that space has become a "must have" feature. It'll be a while...it's all marketing-hype at this point on the PC (as in Personal Computer, not Windows Computer). If you want to wait for the 64-bit chips, then great...but it's not all everyone is saying it is...at least not now, or in the next few years.

Here's one more question. If Apple upgrades the MBP tomorrow and the only change is to go from the 2.16GHz Yonah, to the 2.16GHz Merom, and they increase the price by $100, will you be mad?

In that scenario I would be mad. But it won't happen.

I can care less about 64-bit. Merom is a nice touch, but that's not why I'm waiting for the next Rev. I'm hoping for swappable hard drives, magnetic latch, and (a small stretch here) a better GPU. If they updated all the other parts of the MBP, and kept it at a 2.16 Yonah, I would be a bit angry at not getting the latest processor in the latest laptop, but other than that - I'd be happy with performance.

I just tryed to visit Apple.com and when i got the front page it was blank nothing about ipods and nothing about Imacs nor the itunes 7. could this be there way of redesigning the home page for the release of the MBP's tomorrow?

No, definitely not...they won't be coming til the 26th...sorry.

my PC? No, wait, that's already taken care of itself...

On the upside I managed to sell off my MB today, that is after a couple relistings.. oh the irony!

Boooo ipods! Almost ALL the major PC makers are incorporating CD2, even Tablets now feature it. Just when Apple managed a lead. It would be forgivable in the MB, but for one of the highest-cost notebooks to no longer have key top-shelf components...

On the upside, I hope they stick in a new Nvidia chipset, atleast in the 17", to compete with higher-end workstations from Dell, ect.

Or they could release a tablet :) ... :( sigh...

Or a Newton :) ... :( ....

I cant take it I am so tired of my brother rubbing it in my face that he has a MB and I dont I am about to take his hostage until mine gets her.

or just break down and buy a used PB 12" or 17" and then buy a MBP

Do you already have a desktop?

Take a look at ALL of those major PC makers websites. The soonest ship date I found on a C2D notebook was around Sept. 21. Apple still has time. I think they want to release, and have them avaiable at that moment to consumers, instead of ordering and waiting around for it for 2 weeks.. makes sense to me. When the first order of PC C2D notebooks ship and are received by consumers, that is when I will get worried...

damn it ive been waiting for this update for nearly 2 months now. ill be going to uni on sunday so idealy id like them to come out before then but doesnt look like that will happen now. ill still wait, now ive waited this long. it really does make sense for apple to update the line, along with whats been said already, the main difference between the macbooks and MBPs is the seperate graphics and larger screen. and there is a significant price increase between the 2 lines, is it really worth that ammount of extra money? well obviously it is if you do alot of graphics intensive stuff like i do, seperate graphics is essential but the processor really could do with an upped spec.

*holds out a little longer*

heres hoping later this month

I'm waiting now in principle - I have been waiting since June for the Merom update and would be so unbelievably pissed off if I bought a MBP now and for it then to get updated next week.

Even if they do what they do for the iTV and say 'Shipping Q1 2007' I would be happy as I can then buy a MBP tomorrow without the irritation of an immediate improvement.

I'm just holding out in hopes that the next revision will be built better than the current one. The current MBPs have been nothing but trouble for so many people that Apple really needs to do something about it. Hopefully this delay means they are really investing some time into them this time around.

It is so nice to actually hear someone say that haha. How long have you had yours? That is wonderful you are problem free... so many people with problems around these forms have given me a grim outlook haha.
