I’ve really enjoyed Silo and Foundation both on ATV. I listened to the audiobook series Silo is based on and didn’t enjoy it much, but that may have been the narrator. I’ve never read Foundation.

Not that it matters, but unless I’m misremembering the stores, Wool was broken into two seasons. They finished the first book by the end of season 2. It is slow at times, but slowness doesn’t bother me if it’s done properly. For example Invasion was too slow and was painful when watching week to week (when I rewatched in preparation of the final season I felt like binge watching largely cured the pacing issue).

Totally get not being into that pace, though.
never tried audiobooks. for complex lectures I don't think they can convey the messages written between the lines. speaking of which I can really recommend foundation. I've only read it once but found it absolutely transcendent, having alot of stuff and hidden messages, written in a very clever way, and in fact I've never found a sci-fi book as "profound" as this one , I think . it's very big though, like 1.5M words total iirc. for comparison harry potter is less than 1.1M words.

yes the first 2 wool seasons are basically book 1 material.

to each their own ofc! did you watch pluribus? it's yet another series I was hyped for, but couldnt really commit to it, and from what I've seen , a LOT of people also gave up on it/were greatly disappointed.

I didn't watch it. is the show not as dark?
Not to me it isn’t. I guess when I’m reading something I internalize it all inside my head but watching a show on TV is a more passive activity for me. I have enjoyed both seasons of “Silo” on Apple TV so far… The book was so dark & depressing I stopped reading the series after reading a little of the 1st book “Wool”. 🤷

I don't watch the series either, but 5-minutes is all you gave it before moving on? Wow. Now I'm curious.

It's a very forgettable show. I've watched 2 seasons of it and I couldn't even tell you what it's about. It wasn't bad, but it's also not amazing. I wouldn't recommend people go out of their way to watch it like I would with Pluribus or Slow Horses.

Great show glad it got a renewal. Apple TV has some winners that I really like: Serverance, TMS, Ted Lasso, Hijack, Lessons In Chemistry, Your friends and neighbors, and more

Totally unwatchable. Annoying and hateable characters. Tries to mix comedy and drama while being neither funny nor suspenseful. Self-conciously diverse casting. I've come to loathe Apple TV "prestige slop" - checking enough critical boxes to be considered a "good show" while being utterly mediocre.
Fair enough, I don't disagree with your criticism, especially in the broader sense of modern entertainment.

Have not seen this show. Will give it a try. Seems like new seasons are released around 1 to 1.5 years. Much better than some of the other Apple TV shows

Yeah. OH and I like it. Not every show is for everybody. Seems like enough ATV+ fans like it for another season renewal.

"Most popular show... on Apple TV" 🤣

Pluribus was pretty good, can't wait to see season 2 in four years. I would say Pluribus is much more popular than whatever show they are talking about here. Severance took a hot dump in Season 2. That about covers it.

Loved this show, let me know when all the episodes have been released, so I can binge. Also Apple, don’t judge viewership until its completed released for those of us who prefer, waiting until its completely released before watching, or just release it all at once like a real person.

Loved the first two seasons. It's not plot driven, but focused on characters. If you can't relate to them, it might be boring ... but I liked it a lot. To me it seemed all storylines where finished at the end of season 2, so I was surprised they renewed it. Curious about the addition of Michael J. Fox though.

Hard to disagree with any of that, other than it’s unwatchable. Like some guilty (albeit minor) pleasure, I quite like it despite its cringiness. The main character is particularly punchable though and only Ford’s character is decently written but even then that’s probably a testament to the actor’s IDGAF persona. Felt the same about Ted Lasso, with only Hannah Waddingham’s character a standout from the other caricatures around her.

If you want superior drama mixed with dark comedy, something like Slow Horses is in a totally different league.

Predictable surely. Ford’s character has Parkinson’s and he’s now romantically entangled with his former-neurologist. As a neurodegenerative disease, it’s obvious the character’s arc will follow his disease progression, and given MJF is synonymous with the condition in real life through his early-onset diagnosis and Foundation, clearly he’s going to meet MJF’s character at some clinic or patient group.

I get why people like it, but for me it plays like the Howard Stern of TV. It confuses shock with depth.

The show leans hard on profanity and boundary-pushing dialogue as a substitute for writing. When every other line is an F-bomb or a crude joke, it stops feeling authentic and starts feeling performative. Real people swear, sure, but not like they’re trying to win a contest for who can be the most edgy in the room.

What bothers me more is that the tone undercuts the premise. This is supposed to be a show about grief, therapy, and human connection. Those themes require restraint and sincerity. Instead, the constant shock humor keeps winking at the audience, like it’s afraid to sit in a quiet, uncomfortable moment for more than ten seconds.

It’s not that it’s offensive. It’s that it’s lazy. Shock wears off fast. Good writing doesn’t. When the edge becomes the point, the characters start to feel less like people and more like delivery systems for punchlines.

Truth be told though, I've been burnt with ATV so many times that I've stopped trying. They have this fascination for extreme slowness and visual masturbation that I just can't withstand
This a carefully written and presented technique to lull the viewer into an almost hypnotic state which stimulates the brain's pleasure receptors and wants to come back for more. It's a form of indoctrination that is subtly taking over all tv and should be avoided at all cost.

Apple found time between all the broken software to put this one out, huh?
yeah, I heard rumors that the software coders only get 20-30 minutes of coding time and the rest is spent on writing the script, production, and post production for this show. At least they aren't also responsible for the Craft service setup like they were for The Morning Show.

Slow Horse is also one I’ve just not yet been curious enough to check out. Yet.

The biggest sleeper for me in Season 2 was Ted McGinley.

In the first season and most of the second, Derek was sort of an "accessory" character. Sort of Liz's punching bag, plus some comic relief, but not really contributing a lot.

And then out of nowhere, he dropped some serious vulnerability late in Season 2, and I found myself relating to Derek in a totally new way, and with a whole new level of respect for Ted McGinley's acting chops.

I tried to read “Wool” but just couldn’t get through it, it was so dark, depressing & dystopian. But I’ve enjoyed watching both seasons of Silo. I read “the Foundation series” of books long ago but I’m really enjoying the Apple TV version of it as well. Obviously they are very different interpretations but I like how inventive the universe is portrayed in the Apple TV series of it. 👍🏻
I need to find time to return to the Silo series. About 10? years ago I was in Half Price Books and asked someone for a recommendation and he handed me Sand. I enjoyed it and started picking up other Hugh Howey works. I have read Beacon 23. I bought Shift and am halfway through it and stopped.

I have seen a couple episodes of Silo so far, but haven't sat down and watched them all. Its weird where you have book(s) you want to finish before watching the series.

At this point, I have matured from expecting completely faithful translations to the screen, and am happy when we get something that honors the spirit of the books. You won't get completely faithful performances unless its Shakespeare.

As for Foundation, I never made it all the way through Second Foundation. It was too dry. Asimov is great at concepts but weak at characters. The tv series has done a brilliant job of playing in Asimov's playground.

Well, just like fast food, it just hasn't clicked for me.

I'm quite for real. It doesn't seem to be talked about anywhere near as much as shows like Plurb, Severance or Ted Lasso.
I've seen it on their list since it started, haven't watched it yet.

What about Pluribus and Murderbot? Both are quite weird shows.
