And we also know that over 50% of iPhone owners have never sync thier phone/updated the iOS with a computer since the phone was bought.

And we all know that Apple doesn't market their products based on specs, they aren’t even mentioned at all in ads, so you're average consumer wouldn't be expected to know. Those of us who actually follow what is going on in the tech world are a minority.

(Though I personally believe that consumers should really look into a product before they buy, esp. if they are signing a two year contract!)

While I plan to shift to Verizon...

I am not willing to give up ANY battery life for LTE. Having used the Thunderbolt, its battery makes the device a joke and not worth using. OK, so it has fast uploads and downloads; at least that is true until about noon when you have re-charge it.

And then again, Verizon's plans cost lots more than AT&T's right now. So I might just stick with AT&T. We will see.

Here's where I get to point out that NO ONE has 4G, and there aren't even any plans to role out 4G, or to my knowledge even any 4G technologies that could be rolled out.

An iPhone 4 is as "4G" as anything else is.

Geez, right now we're paying a fortune for pathetic 2GB monthly limits...we are sooooo far from this...

I'm pretty sure the % of Androids is much more cause a majority of users are told its just like an iPhone. They don't even know what Android is. ;)

I think you're wrong. Most of the Android users I know are rooted or know exactly what they have. The reason why is the technology in the Android market changes so much they have to know what they are getting. With the iPhone you get 1 new model and thats it.

Apple is smart with that portion I like it however, the Androids are cutting edge hardware wise and offer tons of options. A phone for everyone whereas the iPhone is one size fits all. To me, having owned both an iPhone and an Android, they are the same damn thing except I like having the ability to root my phone.

I understand the confusion, since the terminology is so similar. Both my parents have gotten confused. Then again, last night I just showed them for the 10th time how to get photos off their camera.

1) First-gen iPhone uses 2G.
Second-gen iPhone uses 3G and is called "iPhone 3G".
Third-gen iPhone uses 3G and is called "iPhone 3GS"
4th-gen iPhone uses 3G yet is called "iPhone 4". I can see the confusion to someone who doesn't exactly ollow MacRumors.

2) Companies often use "G" to represent a hardware "generation", so I can see how this adds to the confusion.

3) Add to all this, the fact that phone companies are fudging the definitions of 4G so that they consumers can see "ooh! they moved from 3 to a 4!"

I don't think that makes everybody idiots. The message is quite muddled to the non-tech enthusiast.

just shows that average consumer is a complete idiot when it comes to technology. Average consumer buys on impulse. They don't know what the hell a certain technology is, they don't know why they want it or how they will use it, but because everyone is talking about it, they want it. Sad really.

I don't find it sad at all, they know enough based on what they hear and see that it's a good device.

How much does the average consumer know about cars, other than whether they like the look and some idea of the reputation of the company? That's how markets work.

What's so special about a phone?

People don't know how their cars, TVs, watches, clock radios or DVRs work –*why should they have a clue about their phones? (or should I just say, what JackC said …)

Do you really think 29% of Android owners have 4G?

Consumers are generally ignorant, especially apple consumers in the last 5 years (only buying apple because of the logo and pretty looks, nevermind function).

Given that most phones out there (like the Droid, Droid X, Droid Pro...) are all 3G devices. The number of Android users (as a % of the whole) that actually have a 4G phone is very small as well.

What does this say of Android users? Not understanding technology is not just an issue with Apple users. A few weeks ago, I had someone try and convince me his phone (an Android handset not even able to play Angry Birds) was exactly like the iPhone and had access to the same exact apps in the Apple App Store as a real iPhone. When I asked to see his NetFlix app, he could not find one;-)

I knew it wasn't 4G, but I don't know much about it, and I have no idea what LTE or HSPA is.

LTE is what AT&T and Verizon will both be transitioning to. HSPA is what T-Mobile and AT&T currently use for 3G.

LTE is actually 3G too...there is no 4G, it's all just marketing sillyness.

The reason people are confused is they called it iPhone 3G which doesn't refer to the generation but to 3G data speeds etc. Then the next phone comes out and is called iPhone 4...and you have employees at AT&T store saying hey you need a new case for your iPhone 4G!?

What are they going to call the next model that actually comes out with 4G data?

I find just the opposite. I am amazed every day when Android users are clueless on what they have. Some even thinking they have an iPhone. Given most Android handsets sold are far from cutting edge and many can't even play Angry Birds, I find the majority of Android users as clueless about technology as iOS users.

You do know you can "jailbreak" an iPhone right?

What are they going to call the next model that actually comes out with 4G data?

If we ever do, it'll be YEARS away, considering I'm not even aware of any 4G technology, let alone any plans to roll anything out.

I bet we'll have a "5G" system too that's 3G

What about the 24% of BlackBerry users thinking they have 4G? There aren't any 4G BlackBerrys, correct?

I think you're wrong. Most of the Android users I know are rooted or know exactly what they have

That may be the case for yourself but most people would just go into a shop and get the phone they like the look of, or a one there freinds have.
i also know alot of people with Android phones and very few of them actually realise that the OS on there phones runs on others. They simply want the latest Samsung Galaxy, Sony Erricson Arc etc etc or they just dont want an iPhone because they think its a fad

At least 75% of smartphone users couldn't care less what standard their phone uses to connect to the internet, only that it does connect.

Some of the smartest people I know have no clue when it comes to technology. Not being able to keep track of every little advance in some esoteric field of communication technology or the newest, biggest, buzziest acronym that comes along doesn't make someone a moron. Get off your high horses.

SMART people read the details on their phone so they know what features their phone has and not ASSUME they have 4G...50% of the mass public are stupid, I work in customer service (call center) i should know !

We're all the same.

I love the cartoonish dichotomies that emerge when you have competing sides in a given tech market though. Android users are automatically given the image of being more tech-savvy and smarter, less affluent consumers while iPhone users are made out to be too-hip-for-their-own-good know-nothing socialites. And yet, all the iPhone and Android users I know are all more or less the same and none of them match either of those images.

SMART people read the nutritional information and ingredients of everything they eat. Quick, how many calories and grams of sodium were in your breakfast this morning?

What, you got better things to do?

It's so awesome when we have people we can look down on, huh?

Don’t be so judgmental. I guarantee each and every one of you would be classified an idiotic, retarded, morons if someone (equally judgmental) asked you about a field in which you have little or no interest. We can’t all be experts in all things, and should be grateful there are people who care about different interests so we can benefit from their expertise.

// inkswamp beat me to it

are you guys suggesting that someone who has no to very little interest in technology would go to a tech site and give a survey related to 4G. not to mention the obvious fact that during their general use of the iphone they have atleast once if not multiple times seen a "3G" symbol in their status bar.

BTW i would probably not answer a survey about a topic in a field which i have little or no interest in.
