iPad 2 line at Fifth Avenue retail store in Manhattan (Thanks, Leon)

While lines were long for the iPad 2 launch in the United States on Friday of last week, availability has been very scarce in the days since, with hopeful customers lining up outside Apple's retail stores each morning hoping that stock has arrived. And even when stock has arrived, customers have typically had to be very close to the front of the line to even have a chance at securing one of the hard-to-get devices.

Several MacRumors readers have written in and shared photos of the experiences trying to obtain an iPad 2, and frustration seems to abound as the long lines continue even a week after launch. Readers have reported that the line at Apple's flagship Fifth Avenue store in Manhattan is essentially a perpetual mass of people numbering in the hundreds, with customers camping out and swapping positions in-and-out day after day as they wait for more stock to arrive. Apple has erected barriers to contain the line, and once the line reaches the end of the barriers each day after stock has been distributed, no new customers are permitted to join the line.

iPad 2 line at The Forum Shops retail store in Las Vegas (Thanks, Danny)

Customers are especially keen on trying to pick up iPad 2 units from in-store sales, as shipping estimates for new online orders were quickly pushed out to 4-5 weeks. We've heard that some Apple retail stores are holding iPad 2 shipments received during the day until the following morning, with some stores opening early when they have stock in order to disperse their supplies and customer lines as much as possible before they open for regular business. Some forum readers have also being using inventory tracking features to try to pin down supplies at Target stores around the country.

Apple has mastered control of the supply chain. They have maximized press coverage with this release.

Yeah, so when iPhone 5 comes out I think I'm just gonna go the safe way and preorder online.

That is horrible, to bad they are in such short supply. I usually go to Vegas to visit family during Easter, that looks like the venitan hotel I won't go there if it is packed. Well alls well that ends well I got mine last Friday lol

In the rest of the world people make lines to get some food and this bunch of loosers do it for a leasure device. What a shame.

The iPad 2 is a great device, but those people are just retarded.
If Apple is really constraining supply with purpose, then those people are even more retarded.

Now who's laughing, yeah I woke up at 3:10 am central time, and ordered online, and I got it yesterday! That was the first one, for the second one I stood in line at best buy for around 5 hours but I got it day of! Who's laughing now!!! I love my Ipad, and the wife loves her's! :D

Seems like things go pretty smoothly in distribution of what they have:
* Call apple store night before to see if stock there for next day
* show up around 5am to get in line
* about 8:15 am they give cards out for number of ipads available
* about 9am get ipad

(This morning there were about 30 iPad2 available at one store)

At least that is the way it is being done in NC. It is just a matter of being in line early enough each morning.

See, since MR does not give a hint to the real cause of the long lines (at least in NYC), people are just going to jump to false conclusions...

Those people waiting in line are like gerbils in a maze looking for a pellet. Aren't they even slightly embarrased standing in long lines for what amounts to a toy? I'm kinda embarrassed for them. I'm not saying the ipad2 sucks I'm just saying it's not an essential item and the lines will be gone in a few days anyway. I feel the same way about people who wait in line for video game consioles, cell phones, ect So I'm not bashing Apple products in general. Camping out and waiting in long lines for non essential items is kinda ridiculous if you really think about it and the people doing it are retards.

Reminds me of people here in Canada lining up more than a month after the iPhone 4 release everyday outside the Eaton Centre Apple store. I managed to get one without spending a minute in any line. Same thing with the PS3, XBOX 360 and other pieces of tech. I just waited 1-1.5 months and supply started rolling in.

expect this with the iphone 5 as well. apple needs to move a lot of units to keep them earnings growing

I was in Roosevelt Field Mall in Long Island yesterday afternoon (St. Patty's day) and they had some of the mid and upper models in stock. Couldn't convince the wife to let me buy one though  :(
