Honestly, they probably wouldn't care nearly as much as you do. Hell, I bet that if you walked into an apple store and told them you could get your brother/sister/aunt/cousin to buy you a mac under the student discount, but that you would rather buy it yourself for convenience purposes, they would let you do it. I bet that happens every single day in apple stores all over the world.

Apple knows full well that not everyone who uses the educational discount is technically eligible. It's a marketing gimmick. If they cared at all, they would require ID before the purchase is made.

Thanks you for your input. I just got off the phone with an Apple rep. She said that I would be eligible for an education discount for having an uncle who works for a University. But having that said, I do not have anything in writing allowing me to do so. That being said, I will be purchasing another rMBP in the very near future, maybe when ML is already pre-installed and the problems have been patched.

Apple monitors these forums, and I hear they are buying stock in MacRumors to catch all of the unethical people who post online and secretly logging all your actions.

BUYER BEWARE!

I doubt you'll get audited. But there are a lot of unmoral people on MacRumors I see.

They don't care. It is a way of making a sale. They still make a massive profit regardless if you are legit. It's like going to a car dealer and haggling them down. If the choice is, give you a discount or lose a sale, im sure they would rather give you a discount!

I've never been asked for proof, but if I weren't eligible for the educational discount I wouldn't use it. Something funky could happen and you'd get caught. Odds are slim, but I believe in bad karma. :p

It isn't like you had to hack their website to get to a page with a lower price. They have 1 page that says the cost is $X and another page that says the price is $Y. Same product. Can your conscience let you do something that fraudulent?

I know what I've done when I bought my Apple products. But what will you do?

If nothing else, you got a verbal "ok" from an apple representative.

This item I want is on the shelf. I could take it up and pay the marked price, but how about I just walk out with it...

I never said that was right. I never said I had done it. I merely said it wasn't hard to do and asked if you could live with yourself if you did so.

If Apple had a "shoplifting is ok as long as you're in this group (and we don't do any kind of verification to ensure you're really a member)" policy, then it would be very tempting to say I was a member and get free stuff.

To falsely claim to be a student certainly violates apple policy. But Apple policy is not law.
Ever driven 36 miles per hour in a 35 mph zone? Did you get a ticket? Were you able to live with yourself?

Also, nice reductio ad absurdum.

Apple retail folks don't really care about these things. As part of proof on educational discount, you can just give them an edu email, and they'll take it. This applies with corporate discounts as well. Apple doesn't like to be a detractor in making a sale, that's just their policy.

When I bought my MBP I legitimately forgot my college ID.. I only live about 20 minutes from the Apple store so I said I could run home and grab it if he needed to see it...

He didn't even blink twice and said it was fine and gave me the student discount, in store.

I'm justifying nothing. I'm just telling the truth instead of lying.

Nobody is lying. The truth:

  • The Apple Education store is for students.
  • Apple does not require proof in all school stores (some are locked down).
  • Apple claims that it does random audits.

OP, keep in mind that Apple offers similar discounts though other programs that you may qualify for. For example, as a federal employee, I can buy through Apple's government employee store for the same price as the student store. I am also currently enrolled as a student however, so I chose to buy from the student store and get the $100 gift card on top of the purchase.

Your best option would be to get your uncle to actually buy it.

You would almost certainly 'get away with it' even if you just bought it yourself but if you want to be certain give him the cash to buy it for you.

Just better hope they don't caught by one of the random audits.

Lol really? If he ended up getting asked and couldn't provide it then the sale would just not go ahead. Apple are not the police. The worst that can happen is they refuse the sale.

Uproar on topics like these are hilarious. How're you peoples' gold-laced lives with extra strawberry toppings going?

Someone posted the terms, it states that they will charge you the difference if it is determined you are not eligible (assuming the sale has taken place already).

Uproar? Just telling it like it is, if people want to abuse the policy they are more than welcome to do so.

Sorry the latter part of the post wasn't directed at you, just some of the silly responses I've seen in this thread and similar topics before.

Didn't know they charge you the difference, but that's hardly the end of the world either - you could just get a refund anyway :)

this thread is hilarious. heres to betting that more than half the people taking the moral high ground in this topic actually bought their macs on student discount without being eligible.

Actually, even if you were eligible, heres to betting that 100% of you were not audited and just want someone else to waste $100-200 on their next purchase. Who's the @$$hole now?

Or look at this another way.

Record labels consistently say that piracy is wrong and it needs to go away. Meanwhile, they consistently get caught pirating other people's work and refuse to admit any wrongdoing.

If you have any access to an edu discount, abuse it until you get caught - a faceless entity would have done the same thing.

Or you can simply look at it this way: Piracy is wrong because it is against the law. There is nothing about student eligibility for buying a computer written in any law. It's just pure silliness really.
