I use Wyse Pocket Cloud (free) to point to my work Windows 2008 Server via RDP for unavoidable tasks, e.g. AD management, IE-only intranet systems, DFS directories. It works pretty well, even out of work via SSH tunnel.

I use iSSH to access my OS X Server via VNC.

I guess this might be useful for people who can't get a free route to their computer though.

Protip: Upload a file, then rename it on the Onlive Desktop, and it won't count toward your 2gb quota anymore (at least as far as the website says). Also they are restricting outbound web access and executables thru Group Policy so you can forget throwing Dropbox or Chrome on there.

----------

That's actually only true if the machine connecting you to it is running an embedded Windows (like Wyse clients). If you are coming from a zero-client (like a Sunray) you fall into a more expensive licensing model. Onlive would seem to fall into that second model.

There are a lot more licenses offered by MS than those listed online ;) Trust me, you can get a Win Server license and be allowed to run any distribution of Windows under it. You usually get around a 30-50 OS per server license, and it costs a lot less than the standard pricing. Generally its only available to those with large numbers of servers. We had to meet with a MS rep from their London office to get our licenses, and they are a LOT lower than the prices listed online.

Looks cool and a great business moneymaker for Onlive. Create some documents and then take a break with some gaming afterwards.

For those that have a home server with a decent internet upload speed, I don't think this is that groundbreaking and you don't have the security and privacy issues to boot.

I don't have a server anymore. (Got rid of my PCs. Too much noise and power hogs), but I leave my MBP on 24/7 (poor little thing!).
Sometimes I access it remotely with LogmeIn to do some work, but not all the time. I mostly rely on iOS Apps.
I may be happy enough if Onlive provides a free option, even if it's limited, as long as it supports DropBox or WebDAV.

Who cares? Why not iWork?

Because iWork is a seriously lacking program.

For many KeyNote many do the job of PowerPoint as Steve Jobs says that he did his keynote presentations using KeyNote. So for the bosses use things were worked on until they did a good job.

Pages was worked on a little more so for light duty use & some specialized groups it does a fair job. With no changes now in over 37 months the Mac application is going nowhere.

Numbers is still a pure joke for anyone that really needs a spreadsheet program. I've used computer spreadsheet programs since about 1978. Things went fairly seamless from SuperCalc2 on my CP/M HeathKit to Excel 1.0 on the Mac. Since 1985 Excel has ruled the spreadsheet area. I've tried plenty & none have come close to doing the job. Ive probably wasted enough money to buy myself a nice mid-priced or above new Mac, not the $999 variety. With only 2 versions of Numbers & no updates in over 37 months there seems to be no live in Numbers or will be given to Numbers. If the Mac version has already been set to languish on the Mac why would I want to spend any money on it on the iToy/iPad market.

Just like Intel Macs do so much better in running Windows programs than the PPC Macs did is a prime example that having the real thing is really so much better. Because MS Office still rules most of us need to use the real program. Running PowerPoint, Word & for me the most important, Excel is so much better in real life. Anything else means you are one of those that can get by with less that the best.

Someone explain to me why Microsoft has yet to put Office on iOS (with dropbox and e-mail files within the app support). There are so many work-around apps on the app store such as this, Docstogo, etc. So there is clearly a big demand for MS Office on the platform.

Because porting an application suite the size of MS Office takes a while maybe ?

Yeah, let's be honest - iWork isn't quite at the level of Office yet. PowerPoint and Keynote? Pretty much. Word and Pages? Kinda, but Word still has more formatting options. Excel and Numbers? Not even.

exactly and not to mention that Microsoft takes Office as primary source of income, so they spend quite time developing it.

Huh??? I didn't understand a word of your post. Re-read that yourself please?

While I will agree that it's time for the next version of iWork your take on it saying it's been 37 months with no changes, maybe you haven't been following Microsoft's "every 4 year" updates on Office. An office program really isn't something that needs upgrading every year unlike iLife where people are constantly upgrading themselves with new cameras for video and photos with GPS tracking features now.
Uh I use iWork to do all of our business brochures and flyers for advertising. MS Word sucks in the graphic department and it won't cut it for the type of 3D graphics we like for our business advertisements. Doesn't really sound like you've used iWork. There's a place for Word and a Place for Pages equally.

Numbers is still a pure joke for anyone that really needs a spreadsheet program.
While it doesn't have the power of Excel it does a mighty fine job for someone that needs a spreadsheet program. You're just being biased. Most people even in the corporate world just create basic spreadsheets. But I will agree it's time for a Numbers upgrade.

I have tried every alternate to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint that has ever been offered, including iWork, and keep coming back to Word and Excel because of their ability to do what I need to get things done. I would switch to the superior Keynote in a heartbeat if I could share my work with my Windows friends.

Once you begin to use your Apple products in a business environment you will learn that Office is still essential.

The fact that they spent the time and resources to make this app shows that there is demand for a good Windows Tablet that has both the full Windows OS and a touchscreen-friendly one. This is what Windows 8 will be, and I think it's going to see a lot of success. Check out this article, it highlights a lot of interesting points on why Ultrabooks and Windows Phones will sell by the end of 2012:

This could be a Trojan Horse to get to iPad users, the fact it is free is a tip off. I have this now and it is impressive.

This is neat but offer nothing at all over CloudOn except for a desktop to launch the applications from instead of a menu. CloudOn also adds dropbox support, which is where my files are held anyway.

I had hopes but I was a little dissapointed. If it had flash enabled web browsing that would be really neat, although flash is slowly dying there is a rare case where I hit a crash, er, I mean flash website. The closest solution is SkyFire but that's only for flash videos. But the free version does not and I haven't yet received a response from them on what they mean by 'cloud accelerated web browsing' for the $10 package.

I'll keep using CloudOn. It offers DropBox support, and the Office apps are modified to be a bit more touch friendly. (I guess that is a case for OnLive, since the apps show up EXACTLY as they would on a desktop, but I still prefer the mods CloudOn did). Now, if they had OneNote, I'd be swayed. The desktop version of one note is a rare hit for Microsoft, something I feel like they did well, but it doesn't, only excel, powerpoint, and word!

I sure wish I would get my activation email. I'm quite anxious to give it a try. If it works as I hope, I will probably go with the paid service in hopes I could install Quicken on it. I have been needing Quicken on my iPad ever since it came out.

I'm paraphrasing but he said if anyone accepts anything other than Microsoft Office they are not using the "BEST". That's BS. Microsoft Office isn't the "BEST", it's the most used and unfortunately has become the defacto standard because they shoehorned the rest of their offerings into the business world creating a monopoly so please get real about Office being the best..

You said it yourself, you'd use Keynote if you could share your work with your Windows friends. Again, you are allowing MS to run your life. For the most part today's software technologies doesn't stop you from sharing your work. If your Windows friends can't see your keynote presentations then you can easily convert it to a PDF and if you have animations you can export it to a movie format. Unless you're sending it to them to make changes there's no reason you can't use Keynote. You're just Microsoft owned like some others. ;)

Haven't delved too deeply into this but I find it pretty functional so far. My employer doesn't yet allow iPad on our network, so this at least allows me to get some light work done away from my desk. I wouldn't want to create docs from scratch, but modifying spreadsheets and word files on the go? Hell yeah!

Until MS gets off their ass and delivers their suite native, this will suffice.

Delayed Activation

I sure wish I would get my activation email. I'm quite anxious to give it a try.
+1 I've been waiting for activation for nearly a week. Any others experiencing lengthy activation delays?

UPDATE: Coincidentally, my account was just activated this morning. Impressive interface -- I look forward to testing this app over the next few weeks.

iWork is good, but for some people the formatting of the original document or spreadsheet created elsewhere and imported to the iPad is too complex to fully translate.

This just removes the glimmer of any argument or reluctance to move ahead and incorporate an iPad into the work environment.

Think of it like grease...sure, things can turn without it, but everything moves better with it.

This should help speed up MicroSoft to do what you are asking for... I'd like the same as well. If nothing else, you won't need to be connected to internet to use the MS Office suite, which would be a step over the OnLive Desktop route.

Yep that's exactly what this is going to do. Microsoft needs to hurry it up tho

A great way to get the office suite on your iPad.

Still, you'd think they would make a promo video where the document doesn't lag when scrolling and zooming.

I was actually encouraged by seeing a little lag in a promo video. I assumed that it was *real* and that, if that really was all the lag I could anticipate, I'd be fine with it.

I'm tired of doctored/enhanced videos that don't show people using the actual end product that I would be paying for. A tiny disclaimer saying "not actual product" doesn't help matters.

I am still waiting activation.

Strg + alt + del ?!

Freeze

Although it's technically pretty impressive OnLive Desktop hung up when I tapped the "About" switch in the "built-in" game "Rebound". The about-screen froze, I could listen to the game's effect sound and watch the tiny cursor/dot on tapping around but it didn't react. No virtual keyboard showed up or could be triggered.

When I killed OnLive with the home button (and killed it in the multitasking area as well) and started again, after the "Sign-In" the hanging about-screen showed up again reliably. No more OnLive desktop… What to do? A new account? I wish that I'd had a STRG + ALT + DEL facility at least on the OnLive website/account.

Well, after one hour or so (I tried to restart OnLive three or four times) the Windows 7 desktop showed up again and it was as if nothing had happened. Obviously there is something like a timed STRG+ALT+DEL robot built-in the cloud. ;)

So better don't mess around with the three games Blackboard (physics puzzler), Garden Pond (relaxing) and the action board game Rebound! Screenshot of the latter:

Tried it out today, very impressed! It just works seamlessly, its the best touch experience I've had with Windows 7 yet. Feels like it is running natively on the iPad. The possibilities with this are endless, Onlive are definitely on to a winner here.
