with raise to wake sometimes faceid starts searching too quick and cant find your face.

this is important for when im traveling on roads that im somewhat familiar with, but dont need maps open the entire time until my destination.

other than that, its a phone that is a fantastic upgrade over my 6+.

I look forward to upgrading again in 3 years.

DON'T pick up your phone and use it while driving... especially on roads you are "somewhat familiar" with. Seriously.

the idea of picking up the phone, unlocking, opening a map app and then typing in a destination while driving (...) is idiotic...

wait for a red light OR pull over OR start the navigation app when you begin your trip...

If you leave the X plugged into power while in GPS directions mode it should stop sleeping the screen, so it doesn't require you to wake it up with Face ID to check your trip progress.

If I'm not plugged in I can have my X on a A/C vent clip and facing me, and if the phone falls asleep I can tap the screen and give a quick 1/2 second glance and it will wake up. But I prefer to keep it plugged in so I don't have to look at the screen to wake, and I usually have GPS giving me verbal directions instead most of the time.

Or if you have been beat up and punched it the face several times but are still alive. Good luck entering a digit PIN or Having Face ID Recognize you enough to Unlock so you can dial 911.

In my serious and saddest opinion Face ID will one Day cost someone their life.

Uhhh, yeah EXACTLY what he said.

Get yourself a windshield suction cup phone holder so when you come to a red light you can just tap it, FaceID scans your face, and BAM, you are in your phone. Easy and safer than the alternative you described!

Here in Washington state you can get ticketed for using a Smartphone while driving. It’s only allowed if you mount it to the dashboard and use it hands free (or minimal use of a finger) and used for directions or hands free talking. You can’t even use it for texting while you are at a red light. You have to pull off the road or into a parking lot for anything more than super brief interactions. I would expect more states to adopt similar laws in the future.

As others have stated, there are ways to use a smartphone safely. It just requires planning ahead.

I hope you're off the roads in 3 years. Seriously, you should be completely embarrassed to come into a public forum and admit to dicking around with your phone while you're driving on unfamiliar roads. It's 2017, almost 2018, and there are enough options out there so that no one is using their phone with their hands while they're driving.

Mine works fine in the car. My only issues with face ID are in direct sunlight.

We have had that law in New York for at least 10-12 years. Of course New York is usually always one of the first states to implement restrictive laws. Depending on what county/city/town/village you are in, if you get a ticket for talking/texting while driving the biggest fine I have heard of is instant $500.00. The "usual" fine for talking/texting while driving is around $150.00-200.00, oh, and of course court fees and the New York State surcharge! F'in ridiculous!

Lots of commentary...but seems like what's being overlooked is that the use that is being mentioned is that of the navigation/GPS functionality.

Enable Siri when locked, and use a handsfree set, or connect to your car audio. It's that simple, no need to unlock your phone to make or take calls. You can also ask Siri for directions for your particular use case.

If you enable Siri when locked then someone can use it to go into airplane mode to prevent you from tracking it while they try to hack into it. (I know they can just turn it off and part it out). Once it's in airplane mode you can't go back without unlocking it.

What else could they do with Siri that could disrupt things on your phone without being able to unlock the phone? I'd have to think about that. They can call "mom", or make appointments and alarms, reminders, etc. Search google?

As a cyclist I strongly agree with this. Had close calls with drivers glancing at their phones taking their eyes off the road.

I’m a cyclist to, and of course the most important rule of safety is to be seen. When I’m in and around cars I’m often looking at the driver to see if they are paying attention, and to see if they see me. It’s amazind how many are looking at a smartphone, or some other distraction, while driving. Even with the new law in effect people are still doing it.

I hope all of the self-righteous on here never adjust their mirrors, radios, smoke, or have passengers in their cars while they are driving.

That’s a good point. Because turning a radio dial, smoking a cigarette, or chatting with a passenger definitely take eyes off the road the way reading a phone does
