I suspect this is something the iPad 2 will address. This has been one of the many complaints, and Apple doesn't live under a rock. Some of the problem is related to, as I understand it, applications that are not properly optimized for the iPad.

iPad 2 will be updated RAM and CPU regardless.

The natural update of the iPad beyond basic update as RAM and CPU is the screen. I see no update as more important than the screen. Especially when the iPhone 4 has awesome retina display.

Since I understand that those who have purchased an iPad feel a little anti-vis the iPad 2 would have a retina screen .. But it is only to realize that whether you own an iPad or waiting to buy an iPad so the screen needs to be better. Preferably retina display but because it is Appple will not retina display until iPad 3 or iPad 4.

Just look at how Apple has done with developing for the iPhone. It will be the same development of iPad as the iPhone. Apple will wait to release some updates a minimum of 1 year the same as it did with the iPhone. Take lessons from iPhone 3G to the iPhone 3GS.
As the replacement for the iPhone 3G would be launched so everyone thought that today's iPhone 4 would be the replacement for the iPhone 3G but oh so wrong we were.
When iPhone 3GS was launched on the Keynote were all sitting there and applauded as obsessed.

It will be the same with iPad…

The iPad does not have a higher ppi than your 3GS. In fact your iPad's ppi is much lower, hence the horribly jagged lines.

I never hold the iPad as close to my face as I do the iPhone. So for me, the iPad's screen looks better than the 3GS' under all normal usages.

The reason question should be, why did you torture yourself?!

Haha, j/k. :p

The 3GS is still a good phone for getting the job done, it's quite fast under 4.2.1. But, like the OP, I'm spoiled by the 4's display. No high-res iPad display = no buy for me either. I need to see things in high detail since my eyes aren't the best....

I returned it because the antenna sucks. When making calls it was easy to hold it in my right hand, but when surfing, being right-handed, I hold it in my left hand and I could easily kill my data connection. This happened on every iPhone I tried and no, I don't consider having to use a case an acceptable solution. The 3GS is still an awesome phone with an antenna design that works out of the box.

I don't want to turn this into an antennagate discussion so suffice it to say that ss much as I liked the 4's display I voted with my wallet and returned that sucker.

The major fear I have of increase resolution is this shall eat into battery time. Peopel ask for all these extra features but in my opinion these have to be balance against the practicality of battery life and so forth. Is there any tech specs on how resolutin can harm battery life?

If the new GPU is more efficient than the outgoing one, then it shouldn't do anything naughty to the battery; especially if there is a better battery in the new one. Bear in mind that the iPhone4 went double the resolution and the battery life increased.

There is actually space for a bigger battery however more battery = more weight.

Personally I do want a higher resolution display, but I'm actually envisioning the iPad 2 staying at 1024x768 this revision which means I will just hold onto my iPad and probably buy a competitor's tablet or a MacBook Air 11 this spring instead.

Personally I'm not interested in iPad Camera's, and a processor and gnu update are not enough on their own to justify another €800 on a 64Gb iPad 2.

But only time will tell what Apple have in store. I'm just not getting my hopes up.

I played Infinity Edge on iPad vs iPhone 3GS and noticed more jaggies in the iPad version, it'd be even smoother on an iPhone 4. iPad needs retina!

Wow there's gonna be a Gnu? I would have been happy with a Pony. :p
Still all you gotta do is sell your iPad now before the masses wake up and get the new one with the neat stuff for a modest upgrade fee. I'm no fan of a back side camera but if it has a new A5 processor and 500Mb or more ram with a thinner profile and a better (less glare?) screen then I'm in. A GNU would be just gravy on top of that. :D

What type of Gravy to do you have with a Gnu ?

Pushing 2048x1536 is hard enough for a laptop like the MacBook Air. I just can't see mobile CPU/GPU combos pushing this many pixels yet. Not with acceptable performance.

Huh? MBA drives 2560x1600 just fine.

The reason it doesn't have 2048x1536 resolution is not performance - this resolution will be unusable on non-scaling Mac OS X. All system texts (menus, dialogs, etc.) and controls (stop light bubbles, toolbars, etc.) will be so tiny that not only it'll be a pain in the arse to see them, but also hard to move cursor using touchpad with such precision.
