Ahhh, you know phones and tech in general has come a long way when we’re having in depth conversations and comparisons about the *charger* we use for our pocket computer. I’m being serious- it’s a testament to how good we have it.

With that being said, I also saw MKBHD’s video and was turned off from the wallet Accessory that I was seriously considering beforehand. As someone who wears jeans on the tighter side, it would absolutely detach numerous times with my usage. Will try it out in person though.

Regarding MagSafe as a whole, I think it’s a neat idea. The puck cable itself isn’t too exciting, but I am eagerly awaiting a dock that allows me to insert the MagSafe puck so that I can create a magnetized Qi dock- similarly to what all those Apple Watch docks do. That’s going to be the real benefit.

In regards to the strength of MagSafe- Apple themselves mentioned that Belkin is working on a car Mount, so I assume that it’ll be strong enough. I’m also excited to see what other accessories 3rd parties come up with.

Wallets like these aren’t really meant to be a primary wallet. I’ve Always thought of these little things like, “hey I’m heading to Dunkin Donuts real quick for a coffee let me get my license and card to pay.” By all accounts you can’t fit more than two cards in this and if you’ve got that then you can’t even fit any cash in as well. So there’s little chance of losing “everything you hold dear” and I’m not even sure if they expect you to have this in your pocket.

Oof I’m pretty sure you don’t get it.

The wallet is a gimmick. The magnet is weak on it because of shielding concerns.

You don’t want a “strong” magnet on the charger.

Yeah magsafe seems limited. I will likely cancel my wallet order, but I think it still has potential for some accessories, like detachable external battery packs. It will align better with the charger as well.

This exactly. I'd like to see some company make a thin external battery that attaches to the back of my phone via MagSafe for those times I need extra battery life.

I like Apples MagSafe Duo Charger. Will be convenient for traveling.
Too bad it's not available yet...

I was hoping the MagSafe charger wouldn’t be too strong to make it easy to flick off so I am happy with this. However I have no interest in accessories or cases so understand that people who want to accessorise may be concerned though.

Personally I am relieved.

Just wait until Airtags come out!
Then you can attach an Airtag to your MagSafe wallet so when it falls off you can go find it!
Just one of those perks of being in the ecosystem.

I think it’s trying to solve the future portless iPhone. I don’t think it solves anything big with the current phone. I’m sure they can get 15w wireless charging using regular Qi chargers but they have other ideas.

My dilemma is whether to take a magsafe or regular cable when i travel.

the cable is smaller for easier packing, and carrying with you, and you can charge from a regular 5v 1/2A USB-A charger (travel plug, laptop, power bank, airport, cafe etc).

Only counter to that is if/when they bring out a magsafe wireless powerbank I’d definitely get one of those for convenience (it’d probably have a USB out too for others to charge from if needed). I already have a standard Qi powerbank but adding the magnet would make it easier to use while charging

Everyone on this forum: "Phones are boring, the thrill is gone, there's no more wow effect, Apple should do something new and innovative like they used to"

Apple doing something innovative like magsafe

Everyone on this forum: "I'm not sold on this"

Much like the folio style case that 1000's of people use ...... what's the issue ?
Was going to say the same thing...there are thousands of third party cases of varying designs to carry just bank cards or to carry money as well. I dont see anyone throwing the same concerns at those and plenty seem to use them.

It's funny that when they announced AirPower with the iPhone 7 it was also "coming soon", and now its successor with the announcement of the iPhone 12 is in the same position.

Seems to me that Apple’s main goal is to convince people to use wireless charging so they can ditch the Lightning port. People complain about having to place your phone just right on a wireless charger, so with MagSafe that’s not as big of an issue - if you buy a charger that uses it. Combined with 15w charging, it makes wireless charging a more attractive option than it has been on past iPhones.

I’m not getting iPhone 12, but I was looking forward to MagSafe in next year’s iPhone. My primary reason is for the magnetic phone holder in my car. I use a case right now, but was hoping MagSafe would give me more flexibility with cases I can choose. Might not be the situation which is disappointing.

Still impressed they have it working this well with a magnet. My understanding is that magnets interfere with the wireless charging. So designing MagSafe to work as well as it does is still impressive, even if not as useful as some of us hoped.
