Apple has a new 'Shot on iPhone' billboard design that combines iPhone photography with iPad sketches, but as one Reddit user noticed, the result is decidedly phallic.

apple-billboard.jpg

The billboard was shared on the Miami subreddit earlier this month, and highlighted by the Miami New Times earlier today. The design features a photo of a shark along with a cartoon scuba diver that has an oversized finger because of the perspective, leading the Miami New Times to wonder "Did Apple Put a Giant Phallic Symbol on I-95?"

The billboard is above Miami's I-95 freeway, and it is around 15 feet in length, so it hasn't escaped the notice of motorists. The cartoon is part of Apple's Shot on iPhone, Drawn on iPad series that features creations from eight artists. Up close, the shark, scuba diver, and octopus combo are clear, but it's a little hard to tell what's going on from further away.

Apple's billboard has been up for over a week, plus the design has been shared on Instagram, so Apple may be planning to ignore those who see more than a simple scuba diver in the drawing.

Maybe if all you see is dicks, you are one.

Or is it at&t? Look at the lower right corner.
Nope, this is an ad of Apple's

Just like they've done for years, at the end of all their TV ads they'd briefly flash the logo of any of the big 3 carriers they sell the iPhone to (here in the US, that would be AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile) so this is just the billboard equivalent of that

Some things are exactly what they appear to be and shouldn't be overanalyzed for deeper interpretation.

As Freud said, “sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.”
Yes and this is just a penis prominently displayed on a billboard. I don’t see anything else

It doesn't help that MacRumors "POINTED Out" the Subliminal image. For Pete`s sake, let people use their imagination :D lol
There’s nothing subliminal about it. At this scale I can’t see what anything really is so it just looks like a penis with some abstract imagery around it

I bet it’s the same for anyone driving by

So what if they did, and what if it is. It's probably not and beauty is in the mind of the beholder. So just live and let, it's not that big of a deal. If you need something else to worry about, I can send you a list.

It's an iPhone ad by AT&T which is an Apple partner. Perhaps someone else can elaborate but I would be shocked if Apple allows AT&T, Verizon or any entity to publish content referencing iPhone (in official Apple typeface, no less) without strict guidelines and/or final approval.

AT&T is the one that chose the image, apple approved it, AT&T paid for it and put it up. See, not that complicated.

"Colonel, you better take a look at this billboard."

"What is it, son?"

"I don't know sir, but it looks like a giant..."

"Dick!"

"Yeah?"

"Take a look out of starboard."

"Oh my god it looks like a huge..."

"Pecker!"

"Oh, where?"

"Wait, that's not a wood pecker, it looks like someone's..."

"Privates! We have reports of an unidentified painted billboard. It has a long, smooth shaft. Complete with..."

"Two balls!" What is that? That looks just like an enormous..."

"Wang! Pay attention."

"I was distracted by that enormous painted..."

"Willie!"

"Yeah?"

"What's that?"

"Well it looks like a giant..."

"Johnson!"

"Yes sir?"

"Call Tim Cook, we've got a code PEN 15!"

Internet win of the day! 🤣

Does it make it better or worse that when you zoom in and look closely, that you can see that it's actually the diver finger-banging a small squid? 🤔

Good.

Times are hard.

Kudos to Apple for pumping up the public boner mojo quotient.

As Shiller would say: “Only Apple can do this.”

Well, people do seem .. delighted?

That was the drinking word from the WWDC presentation, wasn't it?

That's what happens when someone as clueless and mediocre as Tim Cook is made CEO. Cook decided to cancel Apple's longstanding partnership with the advertising agency Chiat/Day in order to make Apple ads in house. Chiat/Day made the following advertisements for Apple:

"1984" television commercial released in 1983
"Lemmings" television commercial released in 1984
PowerBook 100 campaign with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 1991
"Think Different" campaign from 1997 to 2002
"Switch" campaign from 2002 to 2003
"Get a Mac" campaign from 2006 to 2009

And then Cook became CEO in 2011, got rid of Chiat/Day, and made Apple make ads in house (probably to cut costs in order to maximize profits for shareholders).

It's fitting that there's a phallic symbol on a recent Apple ad considering that Cook-era Apple ads are as unimaginative as pornographic movies.

I'd say that there are many pornographic movies that are far more imaginative than any Apple advertisements since Cook ...

I drove by this billboard when I was in Miami last weekend. My wife and we both thought it looked weird but we didn’t think we saw a um, you know, one of those.
