Catch 22

Here's a fun one. I live in a small town with no US Mail delivery to the home. Everybody gets a free PO Box. My billing address for everything is a PO Box. AT&T will not ship to a PO Box. But AT&T will not let me change my address to my street address because they validate every street address through USPS. The USPS will not validate my address because there is no home delivery in my town. Catch 22.

AT&T does not trust the USPS to deliver the phone. But AT&T only trusts USPS to verify delivery addresses. AT&T tried to change my address so many times that my address was flagged as suspicious and now it's locked out from changes.

I couldn't preorder at 12:01AM (though apple.com was down until 12:45AM). Not through AT&T nor Apple. Now I can't pre-order at all. On the up side, they credited my account two months billing. That does me no good if I switch to Verizon. You think AT&T is bad, try USPS.

they won't let you preorder and have it shipped to their store?

I didn't try that. That's still three hours away for AT&T or Apple store. It's just a phone and hardly worth 400 miles and a day off work. But it's a good idea. Maybe I'll try that.

im on the phone with ATT as we speak and they are able to change the address for me!

anyone know which number to call? i keep getting the run around...

1800 MY APPLE
i called earlier. the nice lady said they offer a one time exception to the 'shipping must be billing address' conundrum. ****yeah apple!

Apple refuses to do this for me.

So is the address that can't be changed DEFINITELY insignificant? That's my old address, and I'd rather not go to that house and wait around for it on launch day. :p

I can deal with shipping going to billing address.

Only way to know for sure is to call. When I called, she told me that the order tracker had the correct address and to ignore the address in the e-mail.

Just for closure, I did get a pre-order today. AT&T went all out to make it right. They changed my billing address to that of the post office (the only street address USPS recognizes in our town). Apple customer service manager agreed to change my shipping address to my street address after the order was placed. It probably helped that I have a history of orders from the Apple store with delivery to that address.

In the end, both Apple and AT&T made it happen when I persisted. And I did it with the utmost politeness which probably made all the difference. That plus ten years at $100 a month, say $12,000 give or take a MacBook Air.

have you tried this online via apple store? there's a link to change billing/shipping address on the account page that worked just fine for my at&t phone.

I dont' get this bit? Are you saying that you ordered a MBA as well, and are paying for it over time? And the ability to get both the phone and MBA depended on them fixing this?

But that's great you got it worked out; I don't like having things shipped to my apartment because I'm at school all day, depending on the day, so if I can't ship it to my school's PO box that I have (which holds packages of course), I have to get it sent to my house, then sent over here.

Time to move.

Does anyone know if the orders are being shipped to the billing address or place of primary use? I believe the "subscribers information" in the confirmation email is the place of primary use.

Which I just found you can't update without calling them to change it. I sure hope it's shipping to the billing address.

Been there done that. Finally got my 4 by using a friend's street address in the next town and waiting there for Fedex. Luckily I could change the billing address for my CC online. But later I found out That if you change the billing address to that of your PO it will let you order. Same issue when signing up for 3G service on an iPad. The first time, I used my in-laws address in San Diego, 3000 miles away.

I ordered two 4s for our family plan. I had to make two seperate orders as it kept saying I had two many to continue. I wanted to ship them to my work because... I work so I'm not home to sign for it.

I got the order confirmation e-mail, went to apple.com, and changed it to my work address. Home billing though.

This should work.

I just logged onto the status page and after it started saying processing I could just change the sipping address. Did this for the iPhone I ordered early this morning and the one I ordered this afternoon.
