I’ve heard arguments from the AI industry that for AI to be as good as it can be, it should know about everyone and everything in your life.

This is dangerous, which company would you trust with all that data? Isn’t that any companies dream? To have all of that data, every grain of information it can leverage to extract financial gain.

These companies purpose is to make money, like any business. They are not charities, they are not religions, they are not government.

His design principles are actually based on other key figures in the design industry. And there were many before him, and will be many more after him.
That is a bit of a narrow take. Because it needs one to actually implement those principles in their work, which can be darn challenging because there are a lot of obstacles (organizational, manufacturing etc.) and many people don’t understand it from a conceptual point of view and refuse to bend their opinion to expertise.

Given Love From IO*has been bought by OpenAI for $6.5B(!!!) they don't just have a concept, they have a working device / prototype. And a crazy good one at that. But what is the form factor?

AR glasses are the next natural evolution on the smart phone. and technically it doesn't have a screen. The promise of a direct to eye projection is the dream product. Floating objects can appear real and actually blend in to the environment, be it an interface or virtual environment and continues Jobs and Ive's ethos of the technology "getting out of the way"

We need a visual medium. The Rabbit and Humane Pin failed as they didn't meet the basic requirements of what people need and actually use a 'phone' for. communication, Cameras, content consumption and finding things.

*I didn't realise that this was a different start up.

Scott Cannon, Evans Hankey and Tang Tan. Are serious Ex-Apple Hardware heavy hitters. This could be good.

Aren’t those the challenges present in any company?

And I’d say that Apples most recent designs post JI, have been even more adherent to those design guidelines. Except maybe aspects of VP.

Okay, so that's putting translators out of work. That's helpful to some people, I suppose.

I spoke to a professional Slovenian UN translator about this a few months ago. She translates the UN documents from English to Slovenian and says there are still many nuances, so she feels safe in her job for at least another 5 years or so. However, for regular personal and business correspondence AI tools are already doing really well. The “out of work” argument has been there since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Work simply evolves and we need to adapt, that is a fact. Staying in the same situation “forever” is not good for anybody, IMHO.

According to Altman, Ive gave him a prototype of the first device to take home to test. "I've been able to live with it, and I think it is the coolest piece of technology that the world will have ever seen," he said.

I don’t know, man… the telephone was pretty neat. Imagine being alive when suddenly it became possible to have a live conversation with somebody on the other side of the country - or even the world.

Still won’t be half as cool as this AI thingymajig though, I’m sure, right?

Only skipped through it but why is he talking about Jony as if he’s not sitting literally right next to him lol he’s acting like he’s talking to an invisible ghost
the reason why he talks about ives in the third person is given just after they sit down.
there is an off-stage voice that asks the question:
"So, what is this announcement you're talking about ?"
altman is answering that question, to that person, throughout the film.

Apple faces yet another strategic blow. This development could fundamentally disrupt their position in the market, reminiscent of Blackberry’s downfall when they clung to physical keyboards while Apple revolutionized the industry with touchscreen technology. History may be repeating itself, but with Apple now in the vulnerable position.
Or it could encourage Apple to build more of their own apps rather than taking money from hard working app developers.

I do like Ive, I think he’s a decent guy and obviously cares about people.

But I feel like their is a cult of Apple around him at times, that make him bigger than he is.

His design principles are actually based on other key figures in the design industry. And there were many before him, and will be many more after him.

It’s just he was around and got the chance at the right place and right time. Maybe he knows that only too well.
I think there is a lot of projection here.
Jony seems very humble to me. Sure he likes flowery language, but that doesn't mean he thinks he is better than other people or is trying to compensate for thinking he is less than other people.
I think he is grateful for the opportunities life has afforded him, and I think he brings real heart to his work, which is something to be admired.

Design new ones then. You’re the Chief Mr. Ive.

Yeah you understand how large companies work right?

Like you can't just go off on a wild tangent, incurring multiple millions in costs, without the agreement of your colleagues and people who hold senior positions to you.

You sure about that?
It’s been reported in multiple different publications that a working prototype exists, including in a profile of the AirBnB founder who said he’s used it (full disclosure: he is apparently a good friend of both Ive and Altman). I guess they could be lying about it, but I doubt it.

AI is like the original dot com boom: people will throw money at anything. Ive recognized it and cashed in on vaporware just like Mark Cuban selling Broadcast.com to Yahoo! for multi-billions.

Nah.

Everything that anybody ever produced is inspired by something or somebody. Every movie, every piece of music, everything.

Much of the aesthetic that is iconic for Apple now came as a result of Ive's work.

I agree 100%. Contextual AI is where AI will matter for most. There are many jobs who are able to benefit from AI today by leveraging tools like photo/video generators, but for the general public, your AI provider will need access to YOUR data.

This may start on your phone, with a user enabling access to mail, messages, calendars, etc. However, I think it will transition to the cloud with no dependency on a device. We will be giving an AI provider direct access to our accounts for the different services we use - mail, calendars, banking, security monitoring, etc. This will likely be a paid service - if you want privacy. I can't imagine using Google or Amazon as a provider.

With AI's cloud access, the device could be anything and there would be support for multiple devices - Your phone, car, HomePod, headphones, glasses, etc.

I get the idea, but it completely falls apart once you read the Wall Street Journal article where they say that it’s not wearable.
It’s a device that you can sit on your desk or in your pocket according to that article, so definitely not a pair of glasses, or a watch.

Having just wasted nine minutes of my life on their word-salad self-serving nonsense, I can honestly say that the only time I ever want to see their finished product is in a 'will it blend' video.
