However, I ride bicycles and that’s not conducive to using a screen whilst riding. Siri is intensely irritating with the very small subset of things it can do (“skip forward 30 mins”, “volume up/down”), whereas it cannot do simple things like “play podcasts” (the thing turns on Audible), or “play Audible” where it is a complete nause — “You must unlock your phone to do that” or “I don’t understand that” or “I cannot do that” when in exasperation I’ve told it to boil its head.

This is especially annoying when it’s cold and wearing gloves, so have to stop riding, take the gloves off, pray to the stupid thing, then get back on the bike.

I cannot imagine how awful the Smart Speaker would be.

Better off with a Bluetooth speaker.

You can enable Siri to take actions when the phone is locked. In Settings, there is a setting for allow Siri when locked.

I’ve been using the OS 27 betas and the ground up rewrite of Siri is pretty good. You may find it more useful for your use cases. It is not a replacement for a frontier model for heavy tasks like coding or talking about your relationships , but it handles basic, everyday requests well and with more flexibility. Kind of like we always wanted it to before.
