As before. You’re comparing a ten year old product with 10 year old technology to a product that has not been released.

Compare a smartphone from ten years ago to a smartphone released today. Which would be more performant?

Apple couldn’t even do a smart speaker, see the giant flop that HomePod was and the underwhelming HomePod mini. So it will be hard for OpenAI to do worse than that.

HomePod was underwhelming even ten years ago. Every other smart speaker released in the same period was far better and definitely smarter. Apple’s product was always extremely dumb and infuriating, even if compared with contemporary products (or even order ones for what matters).

They got rid of washed up Jonny for a reason. Thinnnaaaaa and lightaaaaaa was his only shtick. Look at what he's done since. An ego stroking "token" and a car that Ferrari knows is a disaster for their image. They are on the PR tour now trying to hype the Nissan leaf copy.

Actually, I think Apple’s fear is that they will not see coming what will overtake iPhone. Something will eventually, and will they be the ones to introduce it or some other company? I remember reading BlackBerry CEO said iPhone was of zero concern. He hadn’t even seen one or held one in his hand. Thinking that is the sign of stupidity from a CEO. Ternus will be on top of everything. I think he will be much better at understanding why people buy iPhones than Cook’s idea of just improve the supply chain and make the economies of scale work perfectly doesn’t equate to the next big thing.

My big bet would be on glasses so I don’t need a phone at all. Glasses that do everything an iPhone does. In screen that is better than looking at iPhone. Hand gestures and controls that work for things like typing when one doesn’t want to say aloud as that would be annoying. Then will go to contacts and eventually we will just interface through some chip in our brain and then we will all really screw up our existence. And some people will believe I wouldn’t do this if Meta has it, but I will trust Apple. And I don’t think this is even 30 years out to get to this point. 10 years for glasses to beat iPhone. 10 years for contacts to beat glasses. 10 years for a human interface chip that plugs us into the “network.”

Baloney, it is a conduit to the same in the cloud models. I am quite aware of agentic AI since I work at a company that implements it for Fortune 500 companies.

What about body language? Facial expressions? (Micro expressions?)
You are forgetting (ignoring?) the visual aspect of communication.

Talking with another human face-to-face is obviously a better experience than being limited to voice-only.

I wouldn‘t bet on that. The smartphone is so good at so many things that it may stay around for a very, very long time, maybe even indefinitely.

I could immediately, just off the top of my head, think of so many things a smartphone can do that glasses will never be able to (at all or as good) … I won‘t bother listing them, but you vastly underestimate the versatility of the smartphone form factor and vastly overestimate the versatility of glasses. Also, many people just do not want to wear glasses for aesthetic reasons.

As for contacts and a brain chip … that is science fiction. It may happen, but certainly not in the time frame(s) you imagine. (And I for one would never get either.)

Pretty much guaranteed to be a loser product.

Ives time has come and gone. He was historically great, but that was then and now he is past tense.

The entire arrangement does not inspire confidence in Altman or OpenAi's senior management or BOD.

Why would a regular person buy this? It's not as if they're loyal to ChatGPT as they could be to Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Samsung, or Apple.

You are talking about Jim Basillie. He was CEO of RIM when iPhone launched. At that time he was hyperfixated on putting the screws to the Toronto Maple Leafs, Gary Bettman and the NHL. He was super focused on getting a NHL franchise for Hamilton Ontario that he let everything in his business goto crap. He did not say focused on anything RIM related and just hyperfixated on the NHL. It cost RIM and him EVERYTHING.

His comment about the iPhone being of zero concern, because, at the time it wasn't in his eyes. I am guessing that everyone around him were going "danger Will Robinson". He was like NHL for me please.

I'm not sure what this post is saying in regards to the post it quoted.

Also whenever people talk about Apple's "massive profits", I tell them that Apple reports around 27% profits and ask if that's what they mean by "massive", but they never answer.

It doesn't boggle my mind. Siri has been limited because of Apple's prioritization of privacy. Other companies don't have the same priority so they have been able to use much much bigger data sets to train and improve their voice assistants.

Also there is something to be said about sharing the same experience physically--occupying the same physical space and interacting through shared physical objects in that space (playing a tactile board game or as simple as handing someone a drink). Plus a handshake/dap/hug go a long way.

Your only method of interacting with any other human is via speech.

So you are saying a device that does exactly that, would totally suck.

That's not logical, unless you want to touch/hit a AI device to give you the full human experience.

If speech was the only way to communicate with other people, cave paintings and music wouldn’t exist.

I could be wrong, but I believe the smart speaker market has already peaked and is potentially oversaturated.

So what will their speaker offer over every other smart speaker on the market, outside of having a camera of which who wants that in their home?

Especially considering, the mining of customer data and lack of privacy is getting worse every year.

I’ve also done my best not to mention the HomePods too much in this, but my guess is the next generation HomePod mini and HomePod will most likely support AI in someway and that’s not even considering apple’s rumoured HomePod with a display and camera for FaceTime calls.

I might be missing something, but what are other peoples thoughts?

Honestly I kind of wonder if they just want to get devices out there that they can use to train the models with as a way for them to eventually be like nah we're not training off stolen data online anymore, our users signed and agreed to train the models for us 🙂
