"Smart glasses, a smart lamp, and potentially earbuds are also reportedly in development"

Besides the creep factor that's part and parcel of anything OpenAI, I think the larger question is whether they have the technical chops to deliver on this in a way that meaningfully competes with anything from Apple or Samsung. I don't think they do.
Normally, I would fully agree, but seeing as they've poached in the neighborhood of 400 engineers from Apple in the last couple years, I'd say they might have some newfound 'technical chops'. I'm sorta butthurt and kinda furious that those former Apple-ites chose to bail and join OAI. And Jonny Ive has always been a bit of an emperor's new clothes blowhard -- yeah, give me billions and a skunkworks and I can design some pretty amazing ****, too, my bro, believe that. Apple's not perfect, and I'm sure the last few years there were frustrating for AI people, but.. they've stuck to their guns, persevered, and are in a good place to push effective, useful and trusted personal AI to new heights. OpenAI may actually be weighing down the opposite end of the see-saw - I think they become less trustful on a daily basis, and giving them access to anything of mine is at the bottom of my to do list. So, we shall see. A fully executed corporate faceplant wouldn't be unappreciated tbh. **** those guys.

Open AI is deeply burning billions and hugely unprofitable company… just don’t be lazy and do small research and you will see many interesting things about it
Eh? That would be true if you spun Siri and Apple Maps and Safari off as their own companies too, doesn’t mean they are not worth the spend and being part of the Apple ecosystem.

OpenAI and Anthropic are fighting it out right now for the best AI, so for OpenAI to become part of Apple would give it secure finances and allow deep integration with Apple products. The outcome would be amazing for customers:

Also AI is getting cheaper all the time. Within 2 years you’ll be running open weight Fable compatible models on a mid range Mac.

so you think the 100s of billions openai alone plans to spend over the next several years will make AI cheaper? really??
you must have gone off to a galaxy far far away ...

Why not? ChatGPT, after all, pioneered AI for the masses, so if you use their services, it could be good to support them, right? It’s another question, of course, if you do not want to use ChatGPT out of a particular conviction, but then you have plenty of alternatives to choose from.
in my 60+ years I have done quite alright I think, I worked in high tech for 35 years and I have had no need for "AI" or chatbots or what as for me, they do not offer anything would improves my quality of life, if/when that changes, I will re-evaluate.
I realize that "AI" is helpful to some and it is coming, but I make choices for myself, don't need a bot to do that.

And that particular company is scummy and I will not spend any of my pennies on any of their products/services. period. I do have some principles

People in this thread (and in others on MR) are like: “The horse is here to stay but the automobile is a passing fad.”

Unless that automobile is made by Apple. They all the nay-sayers will suddenly become yay-sayers, telling everybody it is the bestest car on the planet, because it pairs with the Apple Watch Ultra they have but don't need.

I think OpenAI overestimates its popularity.

I don't know man, 1 billion monthly active users and 6 billion monthly visits to their website does sound very unpopular. The world absolutely hates them, it seems.

I was thinking about this AI smartphone, if it has no apps then no Tick Tock, Instagram et cetera, i can't see that being very popular with the majority of smart phone users.

(Not including me, i only use BlueSky as i am cool)

You seem to be equating long term development costs with the costs of actually using AI. Apple will spend billions on chip research over the next few years alone, yet their flagship laptop costs you $4k

Magic?!🤦🏼‍♂️
