preeeeeeeeeeeeeetty slow on the 4870, but opencl compatible on my mac pro classic, nonetheless. and i got a fault in regards to the processor... don't know what that would mean.

well then apple is full of sh*t

They have been for a long time when it comes to after market support. How would you feel as a G5 owner who bought a 4.000$ top of the line machine three years ago. Today he is cut off from software development. No amount of rationalisation will get you over the fact that Apple excrement on you as a customer to minimize their product support costs.

Just out of curiosity, what would you have done instead, in the switch to Intel processors? Granted, the tech shift has been quick, but...most machines bought three years ago, PCs and Macs both, don't feel worth the price today.

Companies aggressive to push new standards have to leave old ones behind. VGA still hasn't died and it needs to. I'm more or less okay with the pace at which  introduces new tech.

But since hardly anybody's actually using OpenCL yet, let's wait a little on this first.

Life isn't always nice or fair. Should Apple continue having a bloated, crappy OS just to make a few hundred people happy?

Me too, Bozz.

Still, SL seems OK, although my temps are 10 degrees higher at idle (go figure), and ejecting DVDs, mounting images and installing stuff (Flash 10, various apps) sometimes hangs (have to power cycle to fix it), but otherwise it seems pretty stable.

These ATI issues are driver-related, pure and simple. Give them a little more time. Not much choice, really.

Preety slow for HD4870 ?

Doesn't seem right - this is my 1,1 Mac Pro with a clean install of Snow Leopard:

Shouldn't the 8800 be slower than the 4870 (comparing the scores to the post above me)?

Yes, as we have been discovering, the current state of OpenCL for 4870 is a (sad) joke.

Hopefully by the time apps show up that can use it , Apple will get around to writing the drivers.
