This man can just about open his Macbook Pro.

That's disgusting, he looks like chicken gizzards or sweetbreads or something.

I don't have a problem opening my MBP but I usually use the menu to put it to sleep and I don't close it except at night. In the morning I have no idea what happens, I wake it up and plug it in and attach a portable drive for Time Machine to do its thing while I have my coffee. Being half-asleep minimizes any problems, I guess!

I think what people are saying is that it is difficult to open the lid simply by lifting up because the magnet is stronger than the weight of the Macbook Pro. I'm sure the OP is strong enough to open his mac... I'm betting that those who suggested he "man up" are simply elated at feeling stronger than someone (for once?)

My 2011 magnetic latch is stronger too and if I try to open it with one hand the whole mac lifts up! I guess I don't know my own strength!

While my MBP is a 2010 model, I have looked a the 2011 models at the Apple store and I felt no difference in opening the lids. So I don't think they are using stronger magnets or more of them.

just wanted to chime in that while i thought the OP was crazy when i first read this, my new macbook pro arrived yesterday and he ain't kidding, some of these have crazy strong magnets keeping them closed (i have a 2008 mbp so i have a frame of comparison).

i'm not complaining though, in general the newer unibodies feel wonderfully sturdy compared to my rev. A model! you can tilt the thing vertical and the display will stay open!

Is this a joke?
Put your thumb in the thumbscoop and pull upwards...
I love you.

Which you would ever need to do...why?

2011 15" and as some others have said it'll just lift the whole computer when lifting from the thumb slot. I usually lift the screen open with my fingertips on both sides of the screen, side of the computer near the front corner. Opens without picking my laptop off the table. I'm very symmetry conscious :) hope that helps someone.
