Opera Mini for iPhone sneak peek
Exclusive press and partner preview at MWC 2010
Oslo, Norway — February 10, 2010

Opera Mini on iPhoneOpera Software, maker of the world’s most popular mobile Web browser, plans to reveal Opera Mini for iPhone in an exclusive press and partner preview during the 2010 Mobile World Congress (MWC). Visit Opera’s exhibit in Hall 1, C44, to witness a new way to surf the Web on the iPhone — an experience that Opera promises will be fast, easy to use, and packed with favorite Opera features.

Opera Mini is renowned for its compression technology, which results in significantly faster Web-page loading and reduces data surcharges. With favorite desktop features in its arsenal, such as tabs, Speed Dial and the password manager, Opera Mini is designed with usability in mind.

“We are thrilled to offer journalists and partners an exclusive preview of Opera Mini for iPhone during the year’s biggest mobile event,” said Jon von Tetzchner, Co-founder, Opera Software. “This is a unique opportunity to introduce the fast, feature-rich Opera Mini experience for the iPhone, and to showcase our latest beta releases of Opera Mobile and Opera Mini on other platforms and devices. Opera’s mission is to bring the Web to the world, and by making Opera Mini available on yet another platform, we are one step closer.”

Why would anyone install a 3rd party browser on a iPhone?, serious question.

I havent played around with an iPhone browser...but most editorial and user reviews and opinions I read and hear suggest the Safari browser is the best of the mobile browsers:confused:

I always thought the iPhone browser set the bar. Is this not true then?

The only reason I would assume an iPhone user would want to install a 3rd party browser is if it had flash capabilities, however Opera mini doesn't support it.

Why would anyone install a different browser on their computer?

Different features and personal preferences.

Same applies.

Does mobile safari have speeddial (topsites)?
Does mobile safari sync with Opera desktop?

I believe the way Opera Mini works is, whenever you go to a site it goes through one of their servers. This then spits out a much faster streamlined version of the website (but everything is there, it's not like the "mobile web"). I used to have it on my Blackberry Pearl, and I thought it was great. But the iPhone? I doubt we'll ever see it.

Don't get me wrong, I undersatnd people have different preferences. I use Opera Mini 5 on my BlackBerry Storm2, but thats because the RIM browser is totally S***!

But like I said, I haven't used the iPhone browser before, so I'm not sure what it offers or lacks ...but most mobile and tech blogs would have you beleive its the best mobile browser experience out there at the moment.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

Fwiw, I agree with you, and I don't think anything but safari will gain much traction on the iPhone. It is the gold standard, and for good reason. That's not to say opera won't be a better fit for some, but it's going to be a tough sell because people are really pretty happy with safari.

Opera is still around?

They always struck me as a group that was one bad day away from mixing up a big batch of rat poison kool-aid for the office party.

Opera Set to Preview 'Opera Mini' Browser for iPhone

Opera Software today announced that it will preview an iPhone version of its Opera Mini mobile browser at next week's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
"This is a unique opportunity to introduce the fast, feature-rich Opera Mini experience for the iPhone, and to showcase our latest beta releases of Opera Mobile and Opera Mini on other platforms and devices. Opera's mission is to bring the Web to the world, and by making Opera Mini available on yet another platform, we are one step closer."
According to Reuters, Opera Mini for the iPhone has not been submitted to Apple for review, and it remains unclear whether Apple would consider approving a direct competitor to the iPhone's included mobile version of Safari.
"We have not submitted it yet to the Apple App Store. However, we hope that Apple will not deny their users a choice in Web browsing experience," said Jon von Tetzchner, co-founder of Opera.
Opera's compression technology is also claimed to allow six times faster downloads and ten times smaller data traffic than Apple's Safari for iPhone.

In addition to Opera Mini for the iPhone, the company is also planning to show off beta versions of its existing Opera Mini and Opera Mobile products on a variety of other platforms.

I doubt they will get approval for the iPhone. It's always about the money and I can't see apple giving up any market share in the browser market. It's unfortunate really.:(

"Bringing the web to the world" in addition to all the other browsers out there?

Pretty shabby mission statement..

There are several alternative web browsers in the App Store that have already gone through the approval process. There's no reason for Apple to reject this one just because it's a browser and "competes" with Safari.

If it gets rejected I hope that they put it in Cydia, only having an iPhone 2G the compression sounds very interesting.

As if

It's a publicity stunt for the other mobile devices, nothing more. Everyone knows it would never get past approval for the iPhone.

Plus it doesn't have Flash either, according to engadget, so what's the point?

What I wouldn't give for someone like Firefox (or Opera if they'd be cool with it) to create its browser for the iPhone then release the code. I have my iPhone developer kit. I would just compile it and use it on my iPhone. No Apple to deal with. I could also share this with my friends.
