All this is going to do is give AT&T another reason to put a cap on data usage. How in anyway is using MORE data going to make AT&T not want to put a data cap on us?
I really do like AT&T but they need to do something about their maps and data plans. Verizon maps and service is way better. AT&T needs to get on the same page. So I will take part in this

So you're going to screw me, my wife, and my parents over, who are legitimate users on MY family plan (yes, my plan, and I'm the primary), because you think they are limiting your unlimited data plan?
Sad, and Pathetic. You are no more entitled to your unlimited data plan than I am with mine. I normally wouldn't care what you do with your plan on ATT's network, but when what you do interferes with my plan and my business that I am paying for on ATT's network, that's where I draw the line.
If you do this, I seriously hope you get caught, your service gets dropped PERMANENTLY, and perhaps a lawsuit filed, because you are, premeditatedly and maliciously, going to cause a Denial of Service to millions of people. The FCC, will NOT look happily on that.
And personally, I'd love to see you squirm.

and even if we did pay all their fees to get out of their contract, they still have a monopoly on the 3G frequencies that the iphone uses... so it's pretty much impossible to switch! 🙁

Perhaps a more effective response would a petition presented to ATT, the government agencies that regulate the communications business and perhaps elected officials, pointing out that it would benefit the country to force telecommunication companies to invest in infrastructure. Just saying...

Wasn't the FCC investigating the exclusivity agreements between phones and carriers a while ago? Anyone know the end result of that? Only saying because something like this would kind of force that issue, one network can't handle all the bandwidth. Opening it up to other carriers would kind of even out the load..? Also, people who are against this because they're worried about their service: the people who take part in this aren't the people you have the true problem with.

As much as I despise AT&T, this is just pathetic.
Let's just hope the exclusivity agreement ends next year.
T-mobile's network would definitely crumble but if Apple uses that GSM/CDMA chip it can go to anyone.
I say let all the carriers have at it, competition would be a good thing.

That's part of the problem, the U.S. has no decent mobile carriers. It was only until I moved to Europe and saw the choices we have here that I realised how pathetic mobile service in the U.S. really is...
Oh, and this moronic Operation Chokehold thing is completely juvenile. I can't think of any good that could possibly come from it...

I also plan on participating in rdowns protest, but I'll be getting assistance from an expert in said "choking." 😉
And all "Operation Chokehold" is going to do is prove to AT&T execs exactly why they need to limit data.
Verizon has a 5GB cap on their "unlimited" data plans, in fact, I think all of the major carriers do. And if the iPhone went to Verizon, you don't think they'd have any network problems? The popularity of the iPhone (and other smart phones) is growing quicker than companies can upgrade their networks, and upgrading a network, building towers and expanding coverage isn't simple. There's a lot of government red tape when dealing with frequencies and land where cell towers are to be built. If millions of people signed up for Verizon tomorrow to get the latest smart phone, their network would be crippled and brought down to its knees.
Barely. I'd be surprised if they're not bought out by another company next year, last rumors I heard was that T-Mobile was making a play for them. I'm not sure why you would want Sprint, but perhaps that's why I'm not a big corporate exec...I have common sense 😀
And lastly, I would participate in rdowns' chicken choking protest, but I'll be at work. Maybe when I get home.
