If it's running Android, well they are stuck with whatever OS updates Google wants to provide. You can only go so far without making your own OS.
Well, only if it uses direct Google Android and updates when Google updates. If it's it own, special "take" on Android (like Samsung and nearly EVERY other manufacturer), it's more like you're stuck with whatever OS updates the manufacturer provides...if ever.

Samsung's OS update strategy, at least in the past, seems to be "hey, just buy the latest phone, it's got the updates on that"

Between lock-in and the fact that iOS/MacOS "just works and works really well" 99.9% of the time for me, there's no realistic way any other phone or PC manufacturer can compete for my business. I'm all for competition in the hardware space, and honestly I dig the Samsung foldables. But they don't tempt me so much as they make me look forward to the day when Apple rolls out their own.

They're only directly competing with other Android phones. The last time I check, this will not be running iOS...
exactly ... I don't think they truly understand that. Slow down and compete against Google and Samsung. Everyone wants that crown but don't truly understand the game.

Title should be "Oppo plans to challenge Samsung Globally". It may be an indirect competitor...just like Sony was, and HTC, Blackberry, Microsoft...Motorola.

An image processor from 2015? Is that a mistake or is Oppo charging flagship prices for 7 year old technology (that, apparently, hasn't been improved upon since)?

Apparently $1400, and fortunately, not targeted to the US market.

Correct. Also no A series chip, or Appleverse. Chock full of Google and CCP snooping. Apple users are unlikely to be attracted to these phones, particularly not US Apple users.
The problem is the same as Blackberry and others. They were on top, until they weren't. If Oppo innovates and delivers quality products with fewer bugs, more cohesive product line, and enough marketing to make them seem to be the new thing they could easily overtake Apple.

Let's face it, Apple caters to not so smart consumers spending their parents money and just want to be like some superstar that also uses an iPhone. Apple iPhones are a fashion statement thanks to Apple's focused marketing.

Apple's bureaucracy and nannyisms makes it an easy target. Sure Apple has momentum, but so did Nokia and Blackberry. When was the last time Apple innovated. Heck, they can't even deliver on time the functionality they announce at Keynotes.

Looks more like a case of matching Apple on pricing rather than in performance. A lot of these Android phone makers found a market by undercutting Apple and Samsung on price, but it they are going to be $1000 anyway, why buy them over Apple/Samsung?
Exactly. Why would one want to pay $1000 for a phone that not only have less perceived image/brand, but has less longevity in software support compared to Samsung/Apple.

But Oppo will definitely use celebrities and pay YouTubers to hype up the phone. There will probably some consumers who would be enticed from by the marketing. But I'm willing to guess that majority of the devices will just be in the hand of YouTubers instead of real consumers...

Yikes, I didn't think it was possible for someone to design an uglier camera bump than Apple, but there you go.

I'm sure the "Find X5" will definitely pose a serious threat to Apple. Who names these things, and why do they insist on making them sound like generic garbage?

Not buying a Chinese phone. Dealing already with privacy issues from google/apple/facebook etc...
Just where do you think iPhones are made? You really think that Apple would not adapt to Chinese pressure. After all China has the largest population on the planet. China and India both have almost 1 billion more consumers than the US. You think Apple does not know that and wouldn't trade your privacy for easier access to either of those markets?

Oh, and let's not forget our politician's and Hollywood's enthusiasm for anything China is willing to spend money on.

Didn’t Xioami or some other phone maker just say this? (War with Apple or something?)
Problem is that phones, like PCs, are a commoditized market. Difference between high end Android flagship and low or mid range phone are marginal. Apple is the only one making money because iOS/macOS are suitably differentiated and shield them from downward pricing pressure and keep customers loyal. Meanwhile Android manufacturers have to compete amongst themselves, leading to a lowest common denominator market where cost becomes the only thing that matters. How do you challenge Apple when the customers that will buy your product won’t pay premium prices, and the customers that will… already buy from Apple?

I just don't see any of the Chinese phone makers competing for iPhone customers. Samsung/Android users moving up from low to mid spec phones maybe.

I hope I'm wrong - because competition is always good! But in my circles (middle age, medium to high income), I rarely see anyone with an Android phone these days, and if I do, it's always a Samsung.

We're all on iPhones, be it work or private phones, and I have a hard time seeing myself move to a Chinese brand on Android. Double spyware whammy, plus - not that I care, but I know a lot of folks do - the status of using a Chinese Android phone, they lack the desirability.

You need to remember that the population of China is more than 4x that of the US, which means that there's a huge Chinese population that they can target, not just in China, but globally. Americans are proud of American-made products, regardless of quality. I'm sure that the Chinese have the same mindset.

So, thinking that Oppo is planning to target an average Kansas family of 4 is missing the picture.

Just curious, but you did read the article, right? Not just the headline?

The opening line.... "After Xiaomi pledged to aggressively challenge Apple earlier this month,"...

Good gawd, y'all. I wish they would stop copying Apple's hideous (subjective) design. The camera placement...ugh. My wife has deleted hundreds of photos "taken on an iPhone" because of a finger in the frame.? Yeah, folks she ask to take our pictures with her phone are holding it wrong.?

These copycats are using the formular, Apple's ugly design + cheap plastics. The old Huawei Honor 7 (not the frakking 7A) was phone designed with function over form. Camera in the middle, away from where you hold the frakking thing and a rear fingerprint scanner (I miss those).

Yea absolutely. I'm from Sweden so we aren't proud of China or the US. :) Ericsson phones perhaps, but it's been a while since my GH388 was used. :)

But from what I've understood from these spiels from Oppp et al is that they are targeting specifically the western markets too.

Should the Chinese align themselves with Russia then I don't think anyone will be getting a new phone or device for a while due to all the economic sanctions.
