I'd love to see a poll to judge the popularity of foldable mobile phones. If it was no thicker than a regular phone when folded and there were no issues with durability and there was no visible crease nor tactile crease nor dead zone, I'd think they'd be neat, but I don't see any of that happening any time soon.

Half of the people don’t even seem to have read the article. This is about a FOLDABLE device. In that case thinness does matter because you have to multiply it by two.

I personally cannot wait for the presentation. Might be a contender to trade in my Fold 6 for

Companies don't need to spend money doing R&D, they can just take MacRumors commenters' confident assertions about what "the general public" really wants as gospel 🤣

They don't even need to check with us. They can shortcut actually spending time reading comments because...

...whatever Apple has for sale right now." Anything genuinely new & different is gimmick, undesirable, "99% don't want", etc... UNTIL... Apple rolls out their cut at it and then we all flip to "shut up and take my money." The exception is when some rumors pile up in enough quantity to make us start believing Apple is probably actually going to soon launch whatever is rumored. Then we start migrating from disdain & contempt for it to "wait & see", "but I'll keep an open mind for now", or "I'll have to see one in person" until Apple actually announces it. Same movie rerun hundreds of times. Same outcome almost every time.

All ;)

Furthermore, to the battery life cracks, there would now be TWO compartments for battery, not just one. Think rumored iPhone slim battery. Then add another iPhone slim next to it. The second one has its own battery too... and battery is taking up most of the space inside both cases. Conceptually, one of the 2 halves may be ALL battery inside.

Yea, great.
Now compare it to the battery life of 16PM.
Who the hell ever asked for thinner device, just like with AI in phones they will now try to shove it down our throats like we all begged for it.
No issues here with my Pixel 9 Pro Fold battery life. This was just for testing purposes. I typically average 1 to 1.5 hours of screen time in a 24 hour period. If you are on your phone for even 6 hours 44 minutes, let alone over 13 hours in a 24 hour period often, it's time to check yourself into a cell phone addiction rehab clinic.

Welcome to the wonderful world of marketing, where you focus on the message to be able to make a bold claim, which you can print on banners...

Luckily as you demonstrated, people can see through this messaging with ease :)

Weird logic. If you want to make a Fold thinner, you obviously need to make both parts thinner.

The battery issue is also a non issue since both parts host a battery

Are we going back to the „how thin is it race“?
What about bending and battery life? Not important anymore?

Did you even read the article? The Oppo is a foldable. It will have batteries most likely in both sides, one of them may even be only battery. Non issue. It also needs to be thinner to make the device overall thinner when folded?

I think people are missing an important idea. Apple has always been very strategic about its engineering decisions. (For instance... testing new materials or technology in a smaller volume product before implementing it on an iPhone.) I think they are preparing for an eventuality (possible, though perhaps unlikely) where the foldable market really takes off. In that case, anyone who can't get thin enough will be embarrassed by the competition, since as everyone has rightly commented, with foldables it's the thickness x2 that actually matters, making it a doubly important feature. Apple would get to test out a few things with this purported iPhone Air. 1) does thinness still sell on its own? 2) how thin can we get existing tech knowing that the foldable market might force our hand sooner or later? 3) how can we preemptively guide the market? (whether that means pricing expectations, which "premium" features are most worth focusing on, etc).

My current 15 Pro is loads thicker than my old 6S. Do I notice? No, and certainly not when it's in a case - only that the battery lasts a lot longer than the old one and is a far better phone.

I don't want a "Max" as it's too big for my pocket size-wise, but I really don't care if it was a couple of mm thicker or thinner.

I'd prefer a thicker mini with same or better battery life than a thin pro.

As someone who owned the Galaxyy Fold 2, 3, and 4, who jumped back to Apple with the iPhone 14 Pro and then the new 16 Pro Max for work, I can tell you Apple is falling SOOOOoo hard behind in terms of new tech. So many companies are years ahead of Apple with devices and new functionality. While I hear the excuse, Apple doesn't do anything without testing it for years and making sure it's perfect... nah, that is BS. That used to be the way things worked under Jobs. Under Cook, it's made the littlest change to reduce R&D costs and then raise the price of the devices to eek out more profit. Samsung has 6, I repeat 6 generations of Folding phones to use real customer data to improve upon, meanwhile Apple is still obsessed with thinness, which will cause this new iPhone 17 Air to have a smaller batter and worse camera than the Pros, which is what NO ONE is asking for.

I feel as though Cook and Apple are just lost and don't want to be late to the game but they also don't want to seem as though they are copying other companies. It's a bad look and I'm very worried about their future. The Vision Pro, while a cool piece of tech, was too niche and way to expensive, which cost them millions. The iPhone 16 Pro Max has been nothing short of a disappointment. I'm on the iOS 18 beta and Siri is an absolute disaster, I don't even have the time to write out all of the bugs and frustrations I have with Siri. I've since replaced my camera icon on my lock screen and now use ChatGPT for all of my queries. Apple really needs to step up in the innovation dept and I don't just mean freaking cameras and thinness.

How uninteresting, the fact it runs Android means that I never will even look at it with purchase in mind🫤

usb c is going nowhere but imagine if we actually start to see wireless charging only phones.

i wonder if Apple still plans on ditching the charging port?

As someone who has owned 3, those concerns are not as big as you make them out to be. As for the crease, when you're using the phone and not someone else looking at it from an angle, you don't see any crease, it's not a big deal. On the 3 of the Fold devices I've owned, never once had any issues with durability or dead spots. Sure, the thickness can be a bit bigger than most phones but it was never a dealbreaker. I think people are looking for reasons to not buy them until Apple makes one and suddenly all of those issues won't be an issue like how people defended the loss of the headphone jack.

Don't just try one, buy one. Use it, I still regret giving up my Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 when I took a work iPhone, simply cause they paid for it. I really want my foldable device again. The productivity was amazing, the games were way better, and the battery life was great. My only complaint is for the most expensive device Sammy made, it still had a subpar camera compared to the Galaxy S Ultra series.

I’ve always wondered why Apple doesn’t increase the thickness of the iPhone to get rid of those hideous camera bulges & put in a battery that could probably last a couple days for your average user.
Because adding depth to make the camera flush and filling the extra space would make it a heavy brick that would be thicker than the original iPhone. People already complain about the weight of current Pro models…they’d hate what you propose.

I recommend Apple do a pilot program with a new Mini or SE version; thicken it up to the camera line & put the biggest battery possible with the added room. Since these are devices that were/are not the best sellers, Apple has a clear baseline to see how this change affects sales. Also, since these were/are not Apple flagship models, the risk of loss is less.

The problem with that unless they see a large spike in sales to the point it's obvious it is taking marketshare from the flagship models the conclusion will be there is a small market for such a phone but not enough to change course with the flagship models.

This is exactly why the EU's USB-C law is stupid. No room for something better, which in the case of phones will be no charging port at all.

Nothing in the EU directive prevents a manufacturer from removing the charging port and going wireless only.

I really want my foldable device again.

I don't get all the fascination with foldable phones. Sure, it may be marginally smaller in one dimension; but to do anything I have to unfold it, I can't just glance at it to see the time or that I have a notification. Unless, of course, they add a screen to the back.

I've had older flip phones, and at least the form factor allowed you to hold and open them with one hand; and I can still hold and answer a call with one hand on an iPhone. Can current foldable do that?

For me, foldable are solutions in search of a problem.

I said it at the time and repeat it over and over. It would have been better if they forced Apple to open up Lightning Connector.
