Well, she is very personable in her manner, and she "uses" her Blackness very well, I'll give you that.

Are you thinking what I'm thinking? A Presidential run, down the road?

Oprah for president? ... I see it happening one day ... Dr. Phil will be the White House spokesman

For news of a foreign TV presenter to reach here, she must be quite good, but is she really as amazing as we're being led to believe?

Yes, she is. Love her or hate her, she is one amazing person. I'm not a big fan, but there's no denying the impact she's had on millions of lives.

Jesus she is not an 'amazing person' she hosts a TV show. She hasn't invented any life altering device or cured any disease. She gets paid to be on TV and report other stories that other people have found for her. Big whoop. At least she has been generous with her money, that's all I can say about that. Please do not call this woman with a fluctuating weight problem an amazing person.

The impact someone has on the world is judged by how well the TV network they own is doing?

No silly, it's because she's a billionaire. It looks like the post is gone now, but someone earlier said something to the effect of "she's a billionaire so she must be doing things right".

Sorry, monetary success or fame does not equal "doing things right", there's plenty of downright nasty people out there who have money and fame. I'm not saying Oprah is a bad person, I just don't agree with her theology/philosophy.

care to give us your theology/philosophy? seeing your from texas, i can only imagine what they are.

That would definitely derail the thread which is not my intention. If you want to know my philosophy/theology then feel free to do a search under my username for other posts. I've nothing to hide and have been open in many a thread over in PRSI where such things can be appropriately discussed.

Although be careful who you ask around here about me. Some would say I'm a villain. ;)

Oh, and great job on the geographic stereotyping. That's always a wonderful way to make new friends and put your best foot forward.

Yes, because most young black women who are abused as children, overcome racism and sexism, fight their way to the top of the TV ratings, become billionaires, donate untold fortunes to global charities, inspire women of all ethnic backgrounds shouldn't be judged on whether or not they remember an interns name. Double

She's knows how to milk welfare queens and stupid housewife's quite well.

The only reason she got to where she is now is because of being black and a woman so please stop with the overcoming racism and sexism crap.

Based on your post, she clearly hasn't overcome those things.

I think people who get to her level work very, very, very hard. I am sure she is cut-throat, but so is Steve Jobs. That's what I think most about her. She works very, very hard. And she did make a conscious decision at one point to change the direction of her show to a more positive one and probably lost some viewers as a result, but it's what's given her her legacy now, which is probably more valuable than the ratings she lost. She has credibility with a large group of people.

You may have been born too recently to understand how things were when she was growing up.

I find the responses absolutely comical and typical. Anyone that is truly a "self made" (she didn't inherit a thing) icon and billionaire is definitely quite the individual. Of course people who could never achieve anything remotely resembling Oprah's accomplishments denigrate her. Do I find her interesting or watch her show? Nope, but her professional accomplishments are undeniable except from the usual crowd. I call it "small pee pee syndrome" (though the mentality isn't exclusive to males).

First and foremost, Oprah is an entertainer. She's not a doctor, counselor or therapist, even though some people seem to think she is. She has a long history of supporting quacks, charlatans and frauds who have given her audience some seriously questionable advice.

That's a good point to bring up. People give celebrities (and the internet) far too much credence when it comes to health and science. One of Oprah's faults, as the article mentions, is her openness to pseudoscience, and presenting it to the public without cautions or opposing views.
