Well I know that hope springs eternal… but a bit of realism also helps.

No matter how much we complain about it, O2 and Apple have struck an exclusive deal.

What is not going to happen is Apple and O2 allowing other parties into their closed partnership. Unless the EC or individual governments force them to play fair. (See EC vs. Microsoft)

There already are!

Does "APPLE" know that we are not fools over here? and will not be encouraged easily into moving to another mobile service provider offering poor deals just to get an I-Phone. I think they will have to wake up and realize we are a stubborn nation and will hang out until we get what we want !!!!!!!!!
At least when we get our hands on the I-Phone with the service provider we want to stick with,i'm sure it will be well up-dated and we'll
get a very much higher spec model than the current I-Phone available,LOL.
Let's hope the wonderful EC will tell them where to get off with their 5 year deals !

I really can't see any point in "Orange" trying to fob me off just for a month {my contract is about to expire}
Perhaps they are hoping that you will change your mind over the next month.
Orange have already been in negotiation with Apple and had success in winning the French bid i think they have a lot of clout! {they are massive}
So are Telefonica who own O2.
Re: O2 having Apple bound into a contract so tight ,i really can't imagine that "Apple" would be so stupid as to limit their business to one provider {there must be a clause in that contract?}.
This is precisely what Apple wanted, for reasons that have been explained on this forum many times. It is to their advantage. They are certainly not stupid.
I think maybe O2 are living on a "Wing and a Prayer" and with the Lousy expensive deals they offer
Do you seriously think that you would get a better deal from Orange? Dream on.
I have visited two O2 branches recently and seen people looking at the I-Phone and heard very negative comments when they look at the Tariffs available on top of having to pay for the I-Phone.
You always have to watch out for the 'sour grapes syndrome', especially comments from people who actually can't afford one. This is a premium product for which you have to pay a premium price. If you don't want one, then don't part with your money.
.... nobody appeared to be queuing up for one.
How many people have you seen queuing for any other mobile phone?
If this is not freely available soon i think there will be an awful lot of disappointed people out there.
I'm sure there will be disappointed people out there, which is a pity, but don't hold your breath waiting for it to be available free. It won't happen in the foreseeable future.

Good luck with that.
Nothing will change for at least 5 years, as has already been pointed out.

All very well… But invoking the "Blitz spirit" ain't going to help you at all with Apple, Inc.

Oh ,I can afford one ,not a problem, No fool here,so don't easily part with my bucks! {that's how i've got them}. However i'm a man of good principles and would not get bullied into getting something that i want unless i was fully happy with the deal, hope that makes sense to the sensible people out there,i'm sure it does!
Let's hope there's something in the EC fairness laws that can resolve this issue.

Mobile phones manufacturers have had exclusive deals for phones with providers since day one. Nothing has ever been said before and nothing will be said now.

If you want the iPhone you have 2 choices:

1) switch to O2

2) Buy the iPhone hack it and have to deal with all the arsing around that involves.

I don't know if it was ever answered, but the original poster mentioned the 'visual voicemail' thing.

It was actually a voice > text service (I was in on the trial runs of the service for about six months) provided by SpinVox.

No fool here,so don't easily part with my bucks!
The inference here is that those of us who have bought an iPhone and signed up with O2 are fools. If that is so, I can tell you that there are many thousands of happy fools in the U.K. already, and my guess is that there will be many thousands more over the coming weeks, particularly after Christmas.

Nobody is trying to bully you. If you don't want an iPhone at the accepted price point, don't buy one. Simple as that.

There is nothing unfair about it. It's called commerce. If the iPhone doesn't do well enough at the present price and with the current tariffs, there will no doubt be a price adjustment. Wait for it if you want.

Have to disagree about Orange. Their customer service is woeful. I am on my 3rd Nokia N80 since last June. Phone or system keeps crashing, you wait hours to talk to Orange only to get an overseas call centre who haven't got the authority to make decisions. I am still awaiting a return call from 6 weeks ago - I just haven't got the time to sit & listen to their crappy messages & even crappier music. In addition, staff at their retail store just shrug their shoulders & tell you to contact CS. They take no responsibility for you as a customer once you've signed.

I'm excited about the iPhone but, if it is with Orange, I'd sooner go without.

I'm surprised that you have had such trouble with Orange Steve, a crying shame!
Have to admit i've been with them for 10 years and have been well looked after {if i have a problem i do always remind them i'm and old customer} and have always had a Great contract which no other provider can match {Broadband included as i was with Freeserve/Wanadoo before Orange took over}.
Next time you have to speak with them be firm and polite! and remind them how long you have been a customer with them and if no satisfaction, ask to speak with a supervisor and they should recognize that your not going to be fobbed off, when you need genuine help.
I have heard Horror stories from other service providers , so the grass is no greener on the other side, though i still think it's a big disappointment like many here not to have the I-Phone with them, especially as it's available with Orange in France.

If you read my post correctly you would have understood that I, and thousands of other happy iPhone owners, are seemingly suggested to be fools by the fallacious criteria that you have put forward.

At least I have manners, which quite apparently you have not. I appreciate that you are a newbie, but did you bother to read the forum rules when you signed up? :)

It really pleases me that there are people not willing to pay (read 'cant afford') the price that the iphone and contract are at, it makes me feel all special inside...

You're right. It does keep it more exclusive. Look what happened to the V3 Razr: Very expensive, exclusive and special to begin with but eventually became as common as muck, available on PAYG for tuppence halfpenny! ;)

LOL

ok, guys. look at thetimes.co.uk, driving and read jeremy clarkson's article on the major of london - absolutely spot on ....

now back to this thread, one point that jeremy makes is "I would raise the congestion charge to £25 to prevent 'tatty' cars coming into London" ... get the connection !

besides, £35 a week with wifi and unlimited data is not bad. £279 for ipod, web browser, phone and email is not bad either. and it comes with a solid glass screen - fancy that :)

Now that might be tad expensive — even for Apple and O2!

Whole heartedly agree with you there, even though i can afford it personally, i like to fight the corner of everyone out there who deserves the opportunity to enjoy this new marvel and i'm not budging on getting it on the current terms {other than an un-locked version,Uugh} until i see it fairly accessible to all.

I-Pod 80gb
I-Mac 2.8 ghz 24"
Macbook pro 2.4 ghz 17"
Macbook 2.2 ghz Black
Mercedes Benz CLS 63 amg Coupe, cubanite silver metallic.

well, lets compare to Nokia N95 8gb (which is currently also exclusive on vodafone)
my colleague got one for £75 and 12 months on £35 a month.
lets say we extrapolate to 18months as most people who buy this and the iphone will always be on contract.
we need to add £7.5 for data every month (only 120mb, but anyway) and £3.99 for cloud. so 75 + (35+7.5+3.99)*18 = £911
Iphone is 279+18*35=£909

advantages to iphone:
1. itunes is best catalogue
2. 480x320 screen
3. glass covered bigger, clearer and brighter screen
4. user interface
5. ease of use (inc. email integration)
6. beauty of product and qdos
7. thin (N95 is very thick)

advantages to N95 8gb:
1. 3G (battery drain)
2. 5mp camera (I never use a phone camera, i have my SLR everywhere)
3. GPS (I have in my car and one for holiday - why would i want to drain phone battery)

so there you have it, a straight choice based on whats more important to the individual. my choice in italics.

Slight misunderstanding methinks… I meant: ;) £35 per WEEK is expensive — £35 per month I can live with and do;):D

If you use a lot of data, the O2 tariffs are reasonable value for money. Having said that, I suppose that it is 'horses for courses' at the end of the day and some people obviously regard them as poor value.

Personally, I've gone for the £45 tariff because I need the extra talk time. Obviously it would be nice to pay less, but I'm happy with it.
