Trust me you'll love it. I'm a student, I use my rMBP for browsing internet and watching movies, and I don't even remember anymore that I blew something like 2500€ on this thing. If it was **** and laggy on the integrated GPU I don't think apple would put it on the market.

It will if you try to resell it a year from now...

I'm not going to resell it, I'm going to donate it to my church, or to some kid who needs a computer, or to someone else in my family who wants it, when I feel like upgrading. And even if the difference is 500 bucks or even 1K or 2K, its not that much at the end of the day either.

don't worry, the 13" pro is still a good bit faster than a air and the retina screen is really awesome and you will enjoy it!
and it's 400$ over the air with 8gb + small advantages like better speakers and longer battery life with very low screen brightness.

sure, 100$ less or a 256gb seems appropriate, but this is not the end of the world. I don't know what people expected and why many are even mad :)

I'm so so torn. I want the 13" retina so badly, but that price point is nothing short of ridiculous. As it has been said, the base 15" retina is only $100 more than the upper end 13" retina with the education discount, and worlds better.

I just love my 13" MacBook. The size is perfectly portable, and easily hooked up to an external monitor when needed. But no way am I going to pay $1599 for a computer with 128GB drive when my 4 year old Macbook has 250. Nor am I going to pay $1899 for a computer that has a slower chip than its $1399 cMBP counterpart.

Apple has forced me to settle and compromise, which I feel like I've never ever done with them before. Either settle on a 13" cMBP that doesn't have the "latest and greatest" features that I've come to love with Apple. Or settle on a larger rMBP that may be too large for my needs, and more money than I really want to spend. Apple might not care, but my next computer purchase is going to leave me with a stale feeling. Unfortunate :(

I also don't know what I expected. If you can live with 128gb or the i5 then yeah, sure, why not. But I don't know, it's seriously outdated and the price tag is ridiculous, especially if you consider the screen estate and the fact that you'd get much more value out of a 15" rMBP... I guess what bugs me most is that it doesn't have 256 GB by default.

I'm tempted. My mid 2009 13 MBP is feeling a tad sluggish these day, despite a 256 SSD and max ram.

Anyone care to hazard a guess as to whether the 13 rMBP i7 would feel like a worthy speed upgrade? Obviously the screen would be a vast improvement, but unless the whole UX is pretty noticeably faster, I might hold off another year.

It felt awful. 1779 after my education discount. 220 less than a 15" with a better processor, dedicated graphics, and a bigger hard drive. But portability is at the top of my list and I wanted a retina screen.

How are you all doing?

Edit: Removed "I hate myself" at the end, because I'm peacefully happy with the decision now.

What config was $1779? The upper end 13 MBPr is $1899. with edu discount. The base 15" MBPr is $1999. And that is going from dual core i5 to quad core i7 and some discreet graphics added on the 15". I'd love a 13" but it looks like the 15" outguns it for the dollar.

According to the geekbench benchmarks, you could see more than doubling of your speed. The mid 2009 was in the 3200-3475 range whereas the 2012 13" mbp (same processors as the retina) is in the 6800-7800 range.

You are getting shafted. If you upgrade to the 256gb SSD it is the same price as the base 15" rMBP. Only difference is you get integrated graphics that struggle to run on the 15", no amazing gpu, dual core instead of quad core, i5 vs i7, inferior speakers to the 15" and a pound lighter. Like another person has said you have to be a 75 pound anorexic women if your going to struggle carrying a extra pound around. Seriously the 13" is seriously lacking, terribly overpriced and extremely inferior to the 15" rMBP. If I were in your shoes I would immediately return the 13" and buy the 15".

base model with upgraded processor.

Ordered 13" rMBP, i5/8/768 ssd.

See how it goes during the first two weeks, can always return it.

That's only good if he likes the larger footprint and extra weight of the 15". What's the point of buying for all this "extra value" if you're going to hate using the thing because it's bigger than you wanted. 13 to 15" is a noticeable difference for mobility....

ordered i7 / 256- decided that for a half pound more than a 13 air the retina display was worth it- I know its not as skinny as an air but the weight being only .5 pound more I won't have to worry about not having retina- wish it had more power and expandable ram but I have been waiting for over a year- the 15 rMBP is just too heavy to carry around...

I was holding out for the 13" rMBP in hopes that the Thunderbolt Display would also be updated along with it.

Instead, I'm likely going with the 15" as my only device, and maybe an updated Thunderbolt Display down the line if I have money to burn.

Compare the specs of the 13" high end against the 15" low end and the choice is clear as day. Spend the extra $200 for a much better quad-core CPU, dedicated graphics, and a bigger screen.

err, sorry, if someone 'wants' one of these new 13" rMBPs, it can't be a 'waste' of money. A want cannot be a waste if it makes you happy. This is how I justify all my Apple purchases LOL. I like shiny things, they make me happy, I will buy it and hope I can still afford my groceries.

In all seriousness though. I'm about to order the 2.9Ghz i7 model with 256GB SSD.

I'm hoping I don't rue my decision to go for 128gb instead of 256. I have 100gb of free cloud storage between skydrive, box, and dropbox, so I might end up putting those to good use if I have to. I think the 128 will be fine, but maybe not if I end up having to install windows for some currently as yet unknown reason.

I immediately ordered it, I've been waiting for the past year or so to do so. I'm still running my late 2006 white macbook with 2 ghz intel core duo (I upgraded the ram to 2gb, and the hd to 160 gb, but still...). I did take the optical drive out about 6 months ago since I never used it. I finally decided it was time to say bye to my darling 6+ year old macbook and spring for a new one. Already have most of my "stuff" on an external hd. Plus with the education discount it wasn't too bad considering how much I've gotten out of this current laptop. Excited. I can't even wrap my mind around how much different it will be.

Wow! 2006, thats amazing. I thought my 2007 pro lasted a long time.

Get out of here, that's a toy! A tricycle.

I did something similar: 13" retina, edu discount, 256 GB SSD. I think it is overpriced for what I get, but I don't want a 15" screen (about $150 more) and I want the retina screen.

I hope I will like it. My main point of irritation is actually that I couldn't get it with 16 GB RAM.

Edit: I am also upgrading from an old computer: a 2006 MacBook C2D 2.0 GHz, 3 GB, 160 GB SSD. It works fine but I want a new one with more processor power and better screen. Too bad that the upgradeability is so much worse for the retina than for this old machine.

What other 13" laptop has a quad core CPU? Don't think it's going to happen, at least now, with the thermal and power constraints.

But yeah, they definitely should've made the 256GB as a base or included some form of discrete GPU in there. :/

Nope Apple is just being a cheap a$$. Ever heard of the 3612QM Quad core ivy CPU? Same power/watts usage, 2.5ghz speed and same 3.1ghz turbo boost speed as the 3210M dual core base cpu. All for $125 more than what Apple didn't want to lose on profit. (I'm also quite sure the price difference won't be as big as OEM's never pay street prices we would pay) At least the 256gb version should've had this included considering the $70 price delta between Samsung 128gb and 256gb SSD, NOT $300.
