I have the 16" and 14" right now deciding which to keep. The 16" is a large machine. But I wouldn't say you can't take it anywhere. It's not the most comfortable if I were an everyday commuter, but for the occasional travel, I don't think it's absurd to carry it. I would say if you're a student or on-the-go commuter, the 14" is the better bet. If you like the larger screen and battery life, the 16" is the way to go. It's fine for an occasional travel. Just not every single day.The 16 is not only large and chunky, it's very heavy. You won't be taking that anywhere. I have it right now and if I decide to keep it, it will stay on my desk forever and connected to my ultra-wide.

Conservative stock market investments can (more of less) give you a year over year return of 10%. Boring, but at least not insane.
Not sure why you're so intent on talking everybody out of these machines. Most of the posts I've seen about battery life suggest that people are getting well over 10 hours for everyday work, which is plenty for me. As for the size and weight, I'll know in a week when I get mine. If the extra heft isn't worth the better screen, audio, webcam, and ports, then I'll return it. Pretty simple.Have you gone to an Apple Store and held the 14? It's a lot thicker and heavier than the M1 Air so immediately, you will have less portability. "More Power" --- nice to have more power on tap but it sounds like the M1 Air has been more than enough for your needs. All the other reasons you state above make sense if you want to spend 50-75% more than your M1 Air. I personally don't think it's worth all that money. I use earphones/Air Pod Pros and don't care for a better webcam. If it was FaceID, different story but that notch is so ugly and useless. There's already tons of issues with it and it looks like an Apple problem.
The battery life is where you will be most disappointed. It's hard to go from pretty damn good to just average. I have the M1 13 and while I haven't yet tested the 14's battery, based on Apple's claim of 14 for video and 11 for browsing, I will pass on that and wait for the M2.
I really think people are making too much of this "heft" thing. Neither one of these things are that heavy. The 14" is really not that bad at all. The 16" is "heavy" but it's not ridiculous. We're talking less than 5 pounds. Not sure why you're so intent on talking everybody out of these machines. I have 4 M1 Macbook Airs. Bought one for everyone in my house. The computer is freakin amazing. Runs super cool, super fast, it's super light and has super battery life and it super cheap. It so super. You all do realize that these new MacBook pros use the same chip right? It just has more cores. So you won't see a speed improvement unless you are doing multicore apps. Also these Airs use only a 30w power supply and they come in gold. Forgot to mention the most important thing, no STUPID notch.
Right. There's a half-pound difference between the M1 Air and the 14" MBP. That is noticeable, especially at first, but I imagine I'd quickly get used to it. My opinion is really for the benefit of non-Pros. If you're not a Pro, you're better saving your money and sticking with the M1 Air/M1 13. I'm trying to save OP money, that's all.Not sure why you're so intent on talking everybody out of these machines. Apple has a fix for the notch issues.Just as an FYI, there's a kernel issue shared by some 14 users. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/14-mbp-kernel-crash.2319799/
Also the notch has issues -- apparently for certain apps, the menu options actually can go behind the notch. it's not a 3rd party issue either. it's an apple issue.
hahaha, jeez, calm down buddy. I have the 14 and 16 with me. I did cancel the 16 after seeing early video reviews. It just looked so bulbous. But a lot of folks in these forums convinced me to try it, even as a non-Pro, so I ordered them with same day delivery to review them. I've only had them for about 36 hours, but based on my initial reviews, I will definitely not be purchasing the 14 for all the reasons I stated in this thread. Will play with the 16 more and see how that goes. But yet here you are out purchasing both. Take your own advice? No wait. You ordered a 16. Then cancelled it and started a thread about who’s returning theirs. Then you decided to order both again.
You’re a non pro. Why are YOU bothering with this and yet telling others they don’t need it or whatever. Heck you’re still waiting to receive the 14 and already have the 16? Or you visited a store or something. I don’t know because it’s hard to keep up.
But you’re posting over and over with advice and complaints that for some reason doesn’t apply to you? Why not save your own money, cancel your orders and move on?

Yep, that was my point. There are lots of reasons to buy something. None are "right" or "wrong"—it's purely subjective. It's frustrating how many posters on MR berate people for choosing one of the new MBPs, stating the person doesn't "need" it.
How many of you have a fancy refrigerator with tons of features like WiFI, upgraded lighting, digital displays, etc...things you don't NEED. You could have bought a base fridge that kept your food cold. That's all you NEED.
How many of you have Apple Watches that do little more than your iPhone in your pocket? You don't NEED that watch.
How many of you have clothes that you paid more for due to name brand or some feature when you could have just bought a plain T-shirt from XYZ affordable store and you didn't NEED some expensive article of clothing to get the job done.
How many of you drive a Tesla when there are far more affordable electric options?
People make buying decisions for a variety of reasons, based on what's important to them, just like you.
no worries!Oops. Reread what I wrote. I guess that did sound bad. My apologies. I certainly don’t fault early adopters or a bit of back and forth about whether something is worth it.
The battery life on the M1 MBP is really incredible. I split my time between my iPad Pro and M1 MBP and I literally have not charged my MBP for almost four days.I use my m1 mbp and have not really used usb flash drives, or missed sd card even when i had the old 2013 mbp with ports. So each individual is different in how they use these laptops. What I can tell you is that my battery life, and maybe its Monterey, gives me 20+ hours on my 8gb mbp m1 currently. I use it for work, zoom calls, multi browser tasks and school work and not much video editing etc so its plenty as others have said for regular folks on the prior gen M1 macbooks. I like to see price come down on the M1 mba for my folks to get one for my elderly parents to use.
