I got the netlist version, and it was about $369 when I bought it. Maybe call and ask that they give you that price?

The key is to buy early and sell right when you KNOW a new one is coming. I bought my dual G5 2ghz from Apple refurb for $1599. I added some ram and a hard drive and sold it for... Ready... $2300 on ebay over a year later. Yeah, I was surprised.

Then I bought the 2.66ghz Mac Pro for $2200 from apple with discount. Added some ram and a hard drive again and bam sold it for $3650 on ebay a year later as well. Then I bought the 8 core mac pro from mac connection for $3799 with no tax and free ship.

They have pretty much paid for themselves. Waiting and waiting will only keep you without a great machine. YOu can ALWAYS sell your mac and you will be surprised how much you get for it.

PS: I sold my Dual G4 1.42ghz for $2300 right before I bought the G5. :)

So you may ask yourself, how can I buy for cheap and sell for more a year later? Here is how. Buy cheap. Refurb or online. Save tax and shipping. Thats the beginning. Then you add hard drives and ram on the cheap. I look for deals at hardforum and I fill the system up. Might cost me a few hundred. Now when people see my system on ebay they go to apple and configure it and it comes out to thousands more than I am asking because apple charges out the butt for ram and hard drives. Makes my system look more appealing, and it is. Just throw in some hard drives and ram and it will sell form more than you paid for all. Easy.

Its not a scam. Anyone can find the hard drive and ram deals on their own, but most shops don't want the hassle.

thanks, enforcer

genius. that's why i don't see this a loss - i can upgrade when the new mac pro's come out - and sell this machine and at least break even...

So if I put about 2,800 into a new MacPro right now. Could I in theory make that all back if something faster comes out? Or should I strip the memory out of it and sell it for 2,400? That and I can't believe there are people dumb enough to purchase an older computer for 2,400 when there is something twice as fast for the same price. Know what I mean?

i think what macEnforcer is saying is you keep it in; because when someone does a comparison of the system specs to those on the apple store, it appears if they're getting an incredible deal, because apple charges so much more for memory...

Timing will have alot to do with it as well. He was flipping them over each year or a little more. Obviously the longer you wait the more it can and will go down in price. The previous PPC architecture had good market value, but with the switch to intel - it will be anyone's guess - time will answer it too.

Apple's have historically had good resale value - you could not get the components anywhere, but today the only unique feature is the OS so it will be interesting to see if the trends continue.

Apple is doing that right now with the Pro - buying the components for probably a little more than 1K and then turning it around and selling it for $2499...:p

i hate to rain on everyone's parade but apple are actually a company with shareholders that likes to make a profit if that's at all possible in this thing they call a real world

shock horror

ok , the price of cpus have gone down , gasp

so have the price of videocards , swoon

apple keep the difference - oh gawd no !!!

they're not a charity , believe it or not

the case of the mac pro must cost a small fortune alone just to tool up for , not allowing for the superb machining of the casework , give steve & co. a break

i'm more than happy with the power of mine :)

November 13 Is Looking Good

No one knows when the next rev will come out. THey had the ability to go octo with the 8/7 date due to intel slashing prices, but did not. They either have early SS boards with the Harpertowns that they will spring on us in the next couple months or maybe wait until 2008 MWSF. Nobody knows.
The processors will only be marginally faster, but if they double the cores for the same price then it is worth it and the TDP is much less on the 45nm die.

Bottom line - if you need it now then get it now - if you can wait then wait. No one knows except the almighty Jobs when the next MP rev will be released.
New best guess is November 13.
