Similar BTO as mine, you will be pretty stoked...Mine came from SoCal as well. I live a few hundred miles from you, I suspect you will get it faster....

I see you stuck with the base RAM 8GB option. Are you planning on self installing additional RAM?
Its much more reasonable than what Apple charges during a BTO and is super easy....

I already have another 16GB of ram on the way from OWC. I figure 24GB is enough for now.

FYI.

Have had my

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017)
4.2 GHz Intel Core i7
40 GB
Radeon Pro 580 8192 MB
1TB SSD

for a couple of months now, and this is for people that thought about going to i5 instead of the i7 due to fan noise.

Up until 2 days ago it was 100 degrees in the upstairs office that I am in. and the fans did not ramp up nearly as much as I thought they would.Overall. I am happy.

fans have come up. not that loud when they do. stop after short period of time

( I do programming not video games or final cut)

long story short,

the past two days have been also 100 degrees BUT we had air con install two days ago...

fans have come up less. not that loud when they do. stop after short period of time

Very happy that I went with the i7.

I do not regret going with it.

I don't care about the fan noise. It's a desktop computer, it has to make some noise cos it is a computer! It's not laud all the time like my old Asus laptop (actually not that old - 2016 model). But anyway, I wanted a performance from desktop and that's why I chose i7 rather than i5. And don't expect total silence - it's a computer, it will be laud when you are rendering a video, it will be laud when you are playing some heavy games with high details on Windows 10. But, the noise is normal, cos computers get hot. That's the reason why iMac is not thicker like new MacBook Pro - cos the hot air needs space. I think, when you need really silent computer, wait for new iMacs Pro with better cooling system or new, modular Mac Pro which will be bigger and probably, silent (like for music studio).

It arrived in all its 21 pound glory last week. 4.2GHz i7, 512 flash, 8GB RAM with an extra 8 popped in soon after arrival. This thing is absolutely, positively, gorgeous and amazing. Money well spent. I think I'm in love! :D

As an Apple shareholder (of sadly far too few shares), I really like your setup!
[doublepost=1508485361][/doublepost]I seriously wish I had known about this thread before I ordered my 27-inch, i7, 8 Gbyte, 512 Gbyte Flash storage [sigh], Radeon Pro 580/8 GByte CTO this past Monday (October 16). Apple is listing a November 11 - 18 delivery. I guess the 3D NAND chip shortage is still ongoing. I will attempt to assume a state of Zen-like calm for the next four weeks, while thinking of anything but a new iMac. Yuh-huh.

That's crazy - I wonder why there's such a delay.

My CTO (same config) took about 5 days and in the UK that's still showing 5-7 days.

Which keyboard did you order with it? There's a long wait for the new magic keyboard with numeric keypad built in.

I did order yesterday the 27" iMac 5K Retina, i5 3.5GHz, 8GB Ram, 512 SSD, Radeon 575 and it's showing delivery for Oct 27th. I did chat today with Apple specialist to add to my order the Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad for additional $30 but then the order would have been delayed for 4 weeks so I cancel the request and kept my order as it was with delivery for Oct 27th. I also ordered at Sweetwater a Glyph Atom RAID SSD 1TB to store my doc, photos and music projects. I'm upgrading from a 27" iMac mid-2011 which is still running solid after upgrading the 1TB HDD with a 1TB SSD.

BTW, most models with SSD are in stock and ready to ship at BH Photo. Price is even cheaper than Apple Store and there is no sale taxes. I did order mine from Apple to take advantage of 24 months no interest with Barclaycard Apple Rewards Credit card.

Well of course, that's the keyboard I ordered, too. Face, meet palm. ;-)

See bizzwriter's post above. Evidently, I have greatly sinned in ordering a keyboard with a numeric keypad, which apparently is built of hens' teeth.

For what it's worth, I priced out an identically spec'ed machine except with the standard, number keypad-challenged keyboard this evneing, and the Apple Store predicted delivery dates were November 3 - 8., So the keyboard is adding "only" adding about a week and a half (when you take into account that my actual order was placed four days ago).

So many people talking about Fan noise. The I7 doesn't have a Fan Noise is just a soft sound of a fan that turns on when doing heavy work like converting 60 raw files into JPG or rendering video. I had the Mac Pro before this one and those fans really make noise when doing similar jobs. The first time I ran a few raw's in the 2010 Mac Pro I thought the computer was going to explode!

I disagree.
The fan noise of my i5 goes up to 73dB and averages 69dB. Plus the noise is constant. And this is in a „great“ environment (cold room, no dust, open space, not too close to a wall).
I know this is not normal and I have a defective unit but I would not write off people who report fan noise as too sensitive or sth like that.
