Aside from someone who does heavy video editing or photoshop.....I doubt anyone will notice the difference between having 8gb vs 16gb in the next 5 years. I mean you can get away with 2gb on mountain lion

I would have to disagree because I'm running 4 apps plus whatever normal background processes maybe running and I'm using 1.18 GB if you had 2gb you don't have much left to multitask 4 should be at least minimum. Maybe to an everyday user 8 - 16gb is't noticeable but to someone as you said who does heavy video or photoshop editing or likes to run multiple CPU and RAM intensive apps at once then yes it would be worth the upgrade. And in the rMBPs case it is not upgradable.

Something else to consider is that a mac will use as much ram as available. For example, you may have 8gb and someone else 4gb, but your system says 6 is being used where theirs says 2 is being used when doing the exact same task.

Yeah, I noticed that. Kinda annoys me.

Still, the best way to determine whether you do need RAM or not is via Page-outs.

I'm currently getting some (600000 pageins, 400 pageouts, 20MB Swap) with 8GB, but I ordered with 16gb because at this moment I'm cautious with my RAM, and I'm planning to keep it for another few years.

I have read that SSD helps with pages out not being as important. Is this true?

Yeah, what bluechair said.
Page-out basically means that part of RAM gets dumped to HDD > called "swap".
On mac it's on /private/var/vm/
vm stands for virtual memory (reference someone might remember from windows).

on HDD that means speed drop from ~10000mb/s (16368mb/s on retina) to approx 100mb/s on the hard-drive, while SSD that means a drop to 500mb/s.
Another problem is that if you don't have dedicated swap space on the beginning of the drive you might as well be getting 50mb/s.

The difference is very pretty obvious.

Still hasn't arrived YET! I missed it friday ( my fault no one was home ) waited ALL DAMN DAY SATURDAY because they said it was out for delivery ( missed most of a family get-together because of it ) then they couldn't deliver it due to the weather we were having which was a crock of BS because the roads were clear. Furthermore, *****X is CLOSED today I have to wait for them to tell me it's at my local hub to pick up which won't be till Wednesday ( which I doubt it will be ready in time ) No update on that status either. I would have been fine with them leaving it outside however, this is a $2300 computer were talking about here and it's very cold. Ok, so I called them and told them there is a particular hub I would like to pick it up at well after having me on hold for a while the gentleman comes back and tells me sorry we cannot hold it at this hub its either this one or that one. Normally shipments go smooth for me but this one has just been a nightmare. I have 3 other packages coming via UPS and I doubt there will be a single issue.

Even if you do heavy duty video editing, and I do, there is no reason to get 16gb. My rMBP never uses more than about 6gb, and that is with all video tools open. The rest of the RAM is just sitting there, empty and desperately waiting for a useful task to come along... :).

And the 16gb is slower to wake up from deep sleep, about 4 secs, than the 8gb version.

Aha. We have the same issue. I'm not getting mine until Wednesday either

Hahaha dude congrats. I'm jealous. Did you find any issues with image retention or figure out if your screen was samsung/LG?

Thanks :D

I actually forgot to look didn't even cross my mind. However, I'm off to bed I'll look tomorrow when I get home from work.
