I can't find the show "House" on my new Apple TV. I thought since Fox had agreed for the $.99/episode rentals, all shows that come out on Fox would be available on the new Apple TV. What am I missing here?

No Metadata???

With Home Sharing, when I watch a "Unwatched" show, movie, or podcast, it doesn't reflect as watched back on my TV?? Why Not? Has anyone been able to figure this out?

Pardon my ignorance. Can i use this with no display and an iphone remote as an itunes streamer to my AV receiver? Yes I would have it setup with the option to output video but I am curious if i can leave my display powered down (projector) and stream and control itunes music.

Thanks in advance.

Yes!,

Wow

After weeks successfully hacking my older AppleTV but UNSUCCESSFULLY installing Silverlight to watch Netflix, I gave in to the new one. While picking up a display at my local Apple store, I asked if any of the new AppleTV's arrived. The family Room Rep said they received dozens that very day and only had ONE left. So I grabbed it.

All I can state is, WOW. When I first read about the new model I was disappointed in the lack of a hard drive, purchasing content directly on it instead of simply renting, and a lack of other features currently available in older Apple TV models.

However, setup took less than 5 minutes. Plugged in, got onto our WiFi network, "Home Sharing" is automatic from AppleTV to computer (no need for entering codes), and watching "Star Trek (2009)" on Netflix streaming was FLAWLESS. Great quality picture (I know, no 1080P 2 million pixels, but the 720P was great and the 5.1 surround on my Denon was fantastic, and I'll use my Blu-Ray player for true 1080P HD.

With iOS running, it's only a matter of time before this baby is cracked! Also, the mini-USB port may allow for an external HDD with a hacked unit.

Overall, I'm thoroughly impressed, I thought it was a joke when they first announced it, but I've changed my mind. :)

I don't know if the current Apple TV is a good idea.

The reason is simple: many newer Blu-ray players now support 802.11n Wi-Fi access--either built-in or through an accessory device--that can allow for video streaming from Amazon.com, Netflix, etc. Why tie up another HDMI port? I recently got a Wi-Fi LAN adapter for my Sony BDP-S370 player and not only do I get BD-Live features, but also access to Netflix, YouTube, Amazon.com streaming video, etc.

UK Delays?

Mine was shipped on the 28th, and the date has today slipped from the original 5th October to the 12th!

Mine states:

Shipped on: Sep 28, 2010 via Syncreon Technology

When I track the item it says: In transit to final destination - carrier details to be updated shortly.

Anyone else have an order like this?

What will Apple do ...

What will Apple do with this device if ABC and Fox decides to stop renting TV shows?

I am sure you will be able to rent the shows. The question is for how much. Yesterday, I installed the new Apple TV, but was not able to find any shows that we watch on cable available directly from the new Apple TV. Even "House", which is on Fox, is not available right now for rental on the new Apple TV. However, you can download individual episodes of "House" or the entire season from the iTunes store to your Mac and then stream from your Mac (as long as iTunes is running), using Home Sharing. This is not the most elegant approach, but it works. The iTunes store already has all of the shows that we watch, so if we wanted to drop cable TV at this time, we would be fine with an Apple TV and a Mac.

What I don't get is why Apple did not provide access to the shows not available for $.99/episode rentals directly from the new Apple TV. It has 8 GB of Flash, and even if 4 GB is reserved for iOS and apps, the other 4 GB should be available. You could download 2 or 3 HD episodes on the internal Flash storage and watch them directly from the new Apple TV without having to stream from a Mac. When you run out of space, there could be a dialog box popping up saying that your local storage is full, and giving you an option to overwrite one of the episodes you have already watched with the one you are about to download. Alternatively, Apple could just enable streaming of non-$.99/episode shows, using their current price levels - $2.99 per HD episode, or the season pass bundle price. I don't think that the studios mind the "rental" model. I believe they are disagreeing with the price of an episode that Apple tried to dictate to them. In reality, the price between $1.50 and $1.99 per HD episode is probably the middle ground where Apple and the studios will meet. If I could get a season pass for every series that we watch (fewer than 10 each year) at between $20 and $30 for the entire season, I would definitely drop cable TV right away. My total price of watching TV would drop from $850/year to less than $300/year. Even if I factor in a Netflix subscription, I would end up paying less than half of what I am paying for cable TV now.

This solution is of course for those who can do without watching sports and news on TV.

Mine was shipped on September 27, and FedEx originally said it would be delivered by September 30. Then, FedEx changed it to October 5. It was delivered to me on September 29 at 9:00 a.m. The total time in transit from the factory in China to my door in NC - 48 hours. I did not pay for expedited shipping.

It may not be a good idea for you. But many newer AV receivers have plenty of HDMI ports (if you got a newer Blu-Ray player..) so tieing one up may not be a problem... I currently have my xbox, BD, ATV and Cable box tied in to mine for example with two ports to spare.

I got my AppleTV yesterday from the store, its a good idea for me because I have tons of iTunes content, both bought and digitized, and it seamlessly streams it... I can elegantly control it from my iPhone or iTouch using remote, and even the netflix interface I have heard is easier than your standard blu-ray player (have not confirmed). At $99 its a no brainer for me. I respect that it won't be for everyone.

Both of mine are on the truck for delivery.

One came through early to Memphis and then to Pittsburgh last night. The other came later through Indianapolis and then to Pittsburgh this morning.

Both came to NE Ohio for delivery this morning.

iTunes10 on G3?

I've got an old G3 I like to use as an iTunes server.

I'm well aware the new AppleTV requires iTunes10 (anyone out there confirmed this requirement?)

So how do I install iTunes10 on Tiger?

The latest version of iTunes you can run on a G3 is 8.2.1, according to Apple.http://support.apple.com/kb/DL857

I ordered my Apple TV last week and it was to arrive middle of October. I happened to be by my local Apple store this morning, so I stopped in and bought one of the ten or so they had on the shelf. Came home and canceled my online order.

It's a neat little machine. Even after knowing how small it is, it's still surprising to see how really little the box and all is.
