Possibly the most pointless thing I have ever seen.

This is nothing more then a lap top that is too small, with a useless screen, no key board and possibly no slot load for DVD/CD.

What a joke.... I will take a 12 in Laptop / ibook any day of the week.

I bet they sell 2.

i so totally agree. if i need to work or watch movies or game than a 12" pb is the minimum i need. or if i want my adresses hand, email or read a few pdf's my palm does the trick.

if it was a full size tablet pc it might be useful but in this size? i don't know.

it's somewhere in between and too large to have it always with you.

let's see how this idea works with the customers. i guess it won't be succesful.

How many other devices like this are able to run itunes? I think that a small portable device that can store music or access music on the network and control a set of speakers via airtunes is pretty neat. I've been waiting for apple to fill this hole in their lineup for like two years.

OQO, Sony UPC and a couple of other Japanese brands.

Actually I think this a very good idea but poor implementation (3 hrs batter life!, price too high compared to 12" tablets/notebooks). But I can see myself using something like this once they get it right. It would be perfect for portable TV (MythTVFrontEnd), quick internet search and other chores.

Life is good!

it's good to see Msoft take some initiative, instead of copying apple's designs left and right. black knight to B6, apple's move...

On the other hand. I don't have a PDA as my phone does most of what I want a PDA for. I don't have a laptop either but do occasionally need something more than a Phone/PDA to supplement by desktop environment. This is about the size I want and 3 hours is fine by me. Just the wrong OS.

my main problemis the form factor. it's simply too large to have it always with me. so the quick internet search ot he watching tv while i wait at the dentist won't work.

all the other things like weight, battery life, software, connectivity, price will improve. but the form factor doesn't fit what i'm doing.

Here's another few comments in support of the following:

* Wow, that's ugly.
* Wow, that's bulky.
* Wow, I'd rather have a full 12" laptop any day.
* Wow, it's the antithesis of a PDA.
* Wow, I can't wait to see how quickly the batteries empty out on that.
* Wow, a full installation of Vista within a year, gods that's going to be slow.
* Wow, why not just make a full 7" laptop?

Here's hoping that at least one of the pics floating around the Internet of the supposed true video iPod is genuine or clost to it. I think PDA folks would prefer a more robust device that can fit better into a purse or briefcase than Origami. Then again, a more robust iPod with wireless/bluetooth, 4" screen video playback, and a faster processor might also drain the battery pretty quick, too.

I'd also think because of its FreeBSD core, OS X would be much more scalable than any version of Windows. Which leads me to think that if it does exist, Apple's first generation of the video iPod/PDA would actually have OS X running on it from the get-go.

Aside from this looking like it's another useless gadget, I have one major concern.

A windows pc that I can hold in my hand... which means that after being frustrated with windows (repeatedly) I'd probably end up getting angry and just toss the thing into the nearest lake. I bet the damn thing wouldn't even skip...

My antenna, along with a lot of other phones, is a permanent stub. It is always "raised".

Geez this thread is filling up fast...

I think a 7" laptop would be a pretty good idea. They should just build that. A fairly full featured, 7" laptop with a tiny keyboard and perhaps a stylus for input.

Whats with all this tablet-fascination. Why would you want to not have a keyboard?

Hey, isn't this the forum where the majority of posters thought the iPod wasn't going to be a success after it was launched? :)

Although this new origami technology does seem very cool, especially the name (way better than iTablet or names of the same style) I'm not sure I'm very interested in this news. You are welcome to disagree but I don't want to use a device that has its roots based on a windows operating system.

Yeah, but when Apple eventually launches a 7" tablet you can bet that the Zealots will claim that UMPCs are somehow copying Apple. ;)

All in the US$2000+ price range.

At least this seems to top out at US$1000, but would have been much more attractive to me closer to US$500.

Still a very niche-y product IMHO.

Was it? I don't recall -- but one thing I do know, Apple designed the iPod to do one thing very well, not everything poorly. But this is Microsoft we're talking about.

haha, good catch. i originally wanted to add to my above comment that "it won't be successful but i thought the same about the ipod." but then i left it out.

you're right. it's hard to predict if it becomes a trend like the ipod.

Bad Design

Microsft just does not seem to understand design in the 21st century. Machines like that would have been really interesting in the early 90's. But if we have a look at other portable devices that are around at the moment, this is just a brick that is even lacking a good keyboard. If you want something as big as this buy yourself a 12 inch notebook and you get a full featured operating system. I do not know if Apple brings out a new 12 inch anytime soon, but if you buy a PC notebook you will even be able to run Vista at the end of this year. Buying this new devices is a waste of money and a clear sign for the absence of taste.

I think its funny that if it was running OS X then I bet at least half of the people who are saying it is a horrible device would be frothing at the mouth for this thing.

That being said, I can't wait to see one with a big ol' blue screen error. :D

That antenna is halarious.

I can't believe they put an 80's style, silver boombox antenna on top of this thing, and a crappy plastic stand than is absolutely destined for the junk drawer.

Get the little Vaio or a 12" powerbook. Or a Treo, for god's sake.

The report of the CNN article that lead me here says the Origami uses a full size drive. I take that to mean physical dimensions. I highly doubt that is true since a 3.5 inch drive, currently the standard for full size, is well over 1lb. I found one at the Western Digital site this is 1.6lbs. That just doesn't leave much room for the other physical pieces required.

So I think they are likely talking about size. But they are likely wrong there too, because larger capacity laptop drives get pricey. For me it would have to be at least 120GB to be considered a standard size drive.
