    Original 2g iphones.. the 4gb, 8gb and 16gb...

they only have some cell tower type fake GPS on them, right?

    But no GPS chip inside?

Just wondering. I under utilize my 8 gig iphone and just wondering what the GPS differences between the original and the 3g and 3gs models are with GPS?

Your right it can only use cell towers to tell roughly where it is. Its not accurate enough for use with any turn by turn direction.

The 3G and the 3GS on the other hand actually have a GPS chip allowing them to determine exactly where they are. So that you can use turn by turn, maps and other applications like this. Yes maps will work on the original but it won't pinpoint your location just a rough guess.

The differences are great. The accuracy of the pseudo-GPS on the 1st Gen is not great and I can (on my own observations of owning both the 1st Gen and 3GS) say the accuracy of the GPS chip is well over 60% more accurate.

The 1st Gen iPhone is very accurate if it has Wi-Fi networks nearby to use as references. However, when Wi-Fi is unavailable the triangulation drops down to Cell Site; which is very inaccurate.

Personally I would not use the 1st Gen as a reliable GPS device.
